Mauritius has always challenged UK sovereignty of BIOT in one way or another since at least 1980s, including in multiple international legal proceedings. The UK has always been clear on and defended its sovereignty in international law, and would again until Starmer got involved

I have again had a number of conversations with senior members of the Trump administration regarding Chagos - I am encouraged by those and just donât see how Starmerâs deal will go ahead. I think yesterdayâs reports were mainly grandstanding from Mauritius for domestic purposes
