Anti-communism and fascism are literally the same thing. Not in a “one inevitably leads to the other,” oblique sort of way, but definitionally. They are the same thing. You can’t be anti-fascist without being a communist.
If you think the MTG Arena ladder is a terrible system with perverse incentives that leaves many with lasting mental/emotional/physical stress from chasing a dream that only few get to realize then wait until you hear about capitalism.
Anyone who accepts the line “Magic is a luxury” hates poor people. Magic can be for everyone, should be for everyone, and the only reason it isn’t for everyone is to better line WotC’s pockets.
Imagine how much better Magic would be if artificial scarcity of cards wasn't central to its survival as a profit maker for a multi-billion dollar company.
If you don't support trans people, I will not welcome you.
If you don't support black people, I will not welcome you.
If you don't support gay people, I will not welcome you.
If you don't support marginalized people, you are not welcome.
**BIG ANNOUNCEMENT**
As many of you know,
@emmadpartlow
and I have been in an ldr for a while, and when she was in Roanoke last month we got married! Which is awesome in its own right but has the added benefit of making it much easier for her to immigrate here.
That’s a wrap. Thanks for your support over the years y’all. I’m proud to have been part of one of the most iconic pieces of content in Magic’s history with so much great talent…and
@CoreyBaumeister
.
All of Magic’s biggest problems stem directly from the cards being commodities outside of being game pieces, and too many people cling to the idea that Mtg can’t exist without said commodification. It can, and we should fight against further commodification as much as possible.
If you want to support marginalized communities in MtG here's a simple step you can take:
The next time discretionary invites for any event are announced, and I mean any event--Congratulate those invited and then shut the fuck up.
During one of the commercial breaks on my tape day, Alex was taking questions from the audience when someone asked "Do you have a workout regimen?"
He took a beat, looked up at the guy, made a drinking motion with his arm, and wryly replied "a lot of curls."
RIP to the legend
If you refuse to give those in need a fish because you think it’s better to teach them how, but you’re also unwilling to give them a rod and bait, your moralizing is nothing but self-serving, sanctimonious bluster.
Overslept to 540 when my bus left downtown at 6. As I was running there with my suitcase I tripped on a curb and scraped myself up pretty bad. Rolled up right as they were leaving. I am tired. I am sweaty. I am bleeding. And I am coming for that trophy.
#SCGPHILLY
Magic is a complicated game but in many cases Politics isn't. If you support the Bolivian coup or oppose the Chilean protesters then I wan't nothing to do with you and you should feel free to disengage from my content.
You'd think that eating risotto with a glass of wine for dinner would be classy but the risotto is overcooked, the wine is from a box, and I'm in my underwear.
It's really baffling to me that people are choosing to defend their use of racist slurs to name the Covid-19 virus by citing those used for the Influenza epidemic 100 years ago.
Racist shit happened back then. Racist shit happens now. None of it is ok. This isn't that hard.
I can’t imagine caring if someone Im playing casual magic with has proxies. And honestly, the only reason I care about counterfeits is the potential for them to be marked in tournament play. I want as many people playing as possible and commodification of cards hinders that goal.
My least favorite part of Magic events is seeing others contract a potentially life-altering virus for trying to participate in their hobby, then wondering every time I sneeze or cough if I'm next. I've been lucky so far but worrying takes a toll.
More mask+vax mandates, please.
The struggles of the oppressed overlap so when WotC takes action to punish someone simply for being a sex worker you can take that as evidence that their stated support for other marginalized communities is performative.
wotc kicked me out of the creator program because i apparently sexualized magic: the gathering and that's not allowed
okay so how about the artists who've posted the same things?? it's cool because they are drawings? very nice y'all!
I made the mistake of looking at why Doris Burke was trending.
Did you know that there are people who don't realize she's at the top of her field?
I will tolerate 0 Doris Burke slander on this TL. Absolutely 0.

@CoreyBaumeister
Our plan to wait for the Wizard's proclamation before selecting our weapons for the battle on the morrow has failed. In this silence I grow weary as the melancholy has enveloped me. I may not last the night.
If I should fall, carry on.
With hope,
Ross
Needed to draw land 4 to double Shrapnel Blast my opponent. Drew Spirebluff Canal and saw the line of sac my Citadel to the first Blast so it would enter untapped to cast the 2nd.
I am so smrt.
There is deep, abiding hypocrisy in claiming that you feel for the black victims of the carceral state but don't support protesters because they are "violent." The state brought the violence and it is the right of the oppressed to resist by whatever means they deem necessary.
After months of prep,
@CoreyBaumeister
and I are ready to announce our new competitive MTG-focused YT show: For The Marbles!
But we need your help to launch. So please watch the video in the link, share, and know that we appreciate donations of all sizes.
Most Magic players have no understanding of what makes a format good beyond “Have I won a lot in it recently?”
I, however, know that Modern is great right now. Best it’s been since the days of Izzet Phoenix.
The best thing I ever did for my mental health regarding Magic was to build up other parts of my life. I've told people that once Magic became my job it went from what I escaped to to what I escaped from, but I think it's true for most grinders, too.
The only benefit to having my Magic cards so disorganized is that every time I rummage through them I get to see and wax nostalgic over the skeletons of 15 different decks I played in the last 5 years.
Framing Magic as a waste of one's "potential" implicitly assumes that our only purpose is to serve capital and become the most productive little drones we can for our wealthy overlords. And that's a game I have no interest in playing.
I don't like these Fair Breach decks calling themselves Jeskai Breach. That's our name. We had it first. If you're not bold enough to register Grinding Station, just call yourself Jeskai Consider or some shit.
I spend a lot of time talking about what I'm fighting against, but I had an incredibly productive conversation tonight that dealt in part with the importance of talking about what you're fighting for. Of offering a positive vision alongside a negative one.
So here it is:

Hope you all enjoy these articles, whether you’re reading them for the first time or the tenth.
Thanks to everyone who supported my work at scg over the last 8 years. I’ll have an announcement with my next steps coming soon. (Seriously, it’s coming soon…I promise)
In his farewell article for Star City Games,
@RossHunneds
looks back at his archive and chooses six of his writings with timeless lessons for all competitive players.

As Commander and other casual formats rose to dominate Magic, the competitive community was sold a false narrative that the rising tide would lift all ships, but our ship was left to sink.
There's no chance of Trump being convicted in the Senate and even if he were, removing Trump from office wouldn't have a significant impact on our lives beyond his media coverage.
Trump is a symptom, capitalism is the disease.
Just letting y'all know that I'm among the content creators that won't be staying on with SCG come March. It was a good run for both writing and VS Live, and I'm happy to have some time to figure out my next steps. If you like my stuff, stay tuned.
Was pretty beat up about losing my win and in yesterday, so I thought more about the mulligan in game 3. Give it a read if you were wondering why I sent that 7 back.
2 Things:
The oft-repeated notion that popular players are immune from cheating accusations holds a lot less water in the wake of the Yuuya ban
And if you want to offer me any sympathy for being "cheated" out of the tournament, kindly take that sympathy and shove it up your ass
I've become more aggressive with blocking people this year, and every time I come across a reply that's hidden because I blocked that account, I check it out. My decision to block that account has been affirmed 100% of the time.

Won the Pioneer Challenge with Abzan Rally. Same list from my article on SCG this week. Lost 3 games to an unanswered Rest in Peace and 1 to Lotus Breach when I mulled to 4.
White supremacist terrorism will not end because we denounce it in strong enough terms. It will not end because we change enough hearts and minds. It will end because we dismantle the racist, capitalist system from which it emanates.
The One Ring is quickly reaching Oko levels of “why not put it in [x]?” It just doesn’t look as extreme because it doesn’t require butchering your mana.
🧵Competitive Magic has to do away with the idea of “the right deck” or “the right play” as if those things exist independently of the players playing the game/tournament. Unfortunately, this reasoning has historically been used to justify obviously poor choices but that’s the
I once declined an unprompted concession offer at an SCG Open that would've locked me for Top 8, won the match, and then won the tournament.
Does this mean I'm a better person than you?
Yes. Yes it does.
It seems strange to be upset over lack of clarity when it's obvious to everyone why the two new MPL members were chosen. Also, competitive Magic has always had hidden barriers to success that aren't obvious to many players and break the illusion of pure meritocracy.
Had a birthday date night a bit early since Emma will be back across the pond when I turn 35 for real. Many tasty foods were had with the best partner I could ask for.
WotC: "We're printing 17 secret lairs with Frodo Malone and 14 new Modern sets and look at all these cool Commander cards!"
Me: "Do we at least get allied pain lands in Pioneer?"
WotC: "Well you get 3 of them."

We should have a community fund to support judges while events are cancelled. Anyone with knowledge of crowdfunding DM or reply because I'm ignorant here but am happy to stream for the cause.
If you want to make a difference, you need to stop caring about who is on the ticket in November and start caring about how your neighbors are keeping their lights on through August.
I know it was just 1 34 person RCQ but my first post-Yorion Modern tournament had drastically shorter rounds than any other I’ve played this year. We got through 6 rounds of Swiss in under 5 hours.
Going to be taking the next month or so off before starting up my independent content, but I already have a lot of plans in place for what I want to do, so don't worry. It's coming. Soon.
