CS/Math PhD Application Guide: I have been waiting to make this post for a very long time and finally took some time to condense all my thoughts on the complete process of applying to CS/Math PhD programs with some helpful links, opinions, and general advice. 1 - Deciding if graduate school is worth it? 1. Considering a CS/Math PhD? First, align your motivations with long-term goals. A PhD is a 5+ year commitment, so make an informed decision. 2. Financially, PhD stipends are lower than industry salaries and bonuses. However, I feel that money shouldn't be the sole deciding factor. A PhD offers unique opportunities for deep learning, innovative research, and intellectual freedom not found in traditional jobs. Plus, it opens up positions such as being a Professor or Research scientist. 3. If you are unsure about research interests or lack a strong inclination toward academia, consider other options. I know some people who find great satisfaction and success with a Master's degree, which provides advanced training and can open doors to higher-level positions in industry. A Master's can also give you a taste of research and help you determine if a PhD is right for you! In Canada, almost all master's programs are fully funded, especially in CS/Math. I would suggest not doing the course-based masters or those cash cow programs, which are pretty prominent in the US unless you want to get a master's degree to upskill your skillset and learn more, or it's a requirement like, say, a data science job that requires masters! There are also these new pre-doctoral research positions you could try to see if you like research before starting a PhD! 4. Lastly, pursuing a PhD to me at least is a deeply personal choice based on your goals, passions, and life circumstances. Don't feel pressured to apply because it's expected. Explore options, seek advice from mentors, and make a decision aligned with your dreams. Wish you all the best of luck! Congratulations! There's so many good/hard problems to solve in this field and I encourage aspiring PhD students to consider this field of Neural Operators & AI4Science :) you won't be dissapointed, there's a good mix of heavy theory too be understood whilst practically implementing them to be fast and efficient in practice.
What a special evening at @TIME 100 Impact Award dinner last night. Giving the acceptance speech was really touching, especially with my parents in the audience. Thank you @TIME for shining the spotlight on my work in AI+Science. This is just the beginning. AI with physical understanding can model, simulate and design in the physical world and make scientific discoveries.
