A real privilege for us to host Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge today in
#Abergavenny
to celebrate
#StDavidsDay
visiting our market hall showcasing local produce
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are here at Abergavenny Market to see first-hand how important local suppliers are to rural communities to mark St David’s Day 🏴
We have an excited crowd outside waiting to meet Their Royal Highnesses!

Labour have just been completely wiped out in
#Monmouth
losing their last seat - Overmonnow by-election result Con 214; Lab 116;
Indy Monmouth 116. Welsh Conservative gain
If this is a Tory problem that Labour would solve why are most of the UK’s most polluted rivers in Wales where we’ve had Labour government for over 25 years?
Raw human sewage pollutes our rivers, lakes and seas, and few escape it!
It’s just business as usual as the holidays, livelihoods and quality of life for working people are traded for profit.
Labour would clean up the Tory

Today I announced ambitious proposals to expand Welsh medium education in
#Monmouthshire
by setting up a new Welsh medium primary school in Monmouth ensuring parents have a choice about their child’s education
@MonmouthshireCC
A massive thank you to all our teachers, teaching assistants and other school based staff in
@MonmouthshireCC
who’ve been thrown in the deep end this week but have continued educating our children both in school and online. I hope you have a well deserved break this weekend
A lot of criticism of Matt Hancock this morning but the Welsh Government made the same judgement based on the same evidence saying there was "no value" to providing coronavirus tests to everybody in care homes but sadly there’s no Welsh enquiry
Today is my last day as Leader of Monmouthshire County Council. It’s been a privilege. We’ve tried our best over the last 12 months to deliver for our residents. So grateful to my cabinet team for their hard work and support. I wish the new administration well
I want a leader who’s inclusive, compassionate, a team player and above all, has integrity. I believe
@PennyMordaunt
is the candidate best placed to lead this country and take on the very real challenges facing families
@PennyMordauntPM
#PM4PM
Humbled to have been elected Leader of the Conservative Group on
@MonmouthshireCC
tonight by my amazing colleagues. Privileged to be following in the giant footsteps of
@Peter4Monmouth
I’m so proud to lead a team of wonderful and hardworking cllrs
At every opportunity
@WelshGovernment
ministers and labour politicians are criticising decisions taken by HM Government, yet the moment they’re on the receiving end of fair challenge and constructive criticism, there’s outrage on Twitter 🤦🏼♂️
It feels so wrong that in the next couple of days people can get their haircut and play golf but a lot of children won’t be able to fully return to school for another month. Another broken promise that schools would be the top priority 😡
Boris was criticised for easing restrictions in July. Governments in Scotland & Wales were warned that by keeping restrictions in place they’d delay the peak from late summer to autumn and increase risk of NHS being overwhelmed. Covid case rates per 100,000:
Yesterday we lost a very dear friend and Wales lost a giant of local government in Cllr Bob Greenland, Deputy Leader of
@MonmouthshireCC
from 2008-2022. Thinking of his wife Scilla and their family
🚨 Labour’s 1st
@MonmouthshireCC
budget:
⬆️ council tax up 6%
✂️ £10M cuts to services
🚗 car park fees up 15%
🏫 3% cut to school budgets
📚 50% cut in library books
🎵 axe Gwent Music subsidy
🥣 £2 breakfast club charge
🚌 cuts to school transport
🌿 garden waste charge up 78%
Congratulations to our newest
@WelshConserv
@MonmouthshireCC
county councillor
@RachelBuckler1
. An incredible result against a difficult national backdrop. So proud of Rachel and our team who worked tirelessly
Labour Cabinet Member Cllr Garrick brought into select committee to be scrutinised on her proposed £11million cuts to services in Monmouthshire County Council caught knitting while answering questions! This behaviour brings the council into disrepute
Disappointed to see this bizarre attack on the compassionate approach that
@SaraLlanover
and I led in Monmouthshire. The only way Conservatives will ever win power in Wales is from the centre ground. We shouldn’t abandon issues like climate change or inequality to the left
1/2 The Conservative post-mortem begins. A senior Conservative source pins the blame for losing it on the party leadership on the council which has been committed to ‘compassionate conservatism’ and critical of Boris Johnson. They go on to say:
Many thanks to the hardworking staff at the
@AneurinBevanUHB
mass vaccination centre in Cwmbran who are doing a brilliant job - such an efficient operation. No waits outside at all today
#GetBoostedNow
Conservatives have never won a county or community seat in Govilon in Monmouthshire. Until today. Congratulations to
@hannahhjjarvis
on her election to represent Govilon on Llanfoist Community Council 👏🏻
@Conservatives
@MonmouthCA
@WelshConserv
Just 10 school days left before September and still no announcement from
@WelshGovernment
. Full time or part time return? Hub provision? Blended learning? 2m, 1m or no social distancing? Schools, councils and parents need to plan accordingly
Delighted the Prime Minister has appointed a Welsh-speaking former chair of Welsh Affairs Select Committee, former AM and grafter of an MP
@DavidTCDavies
to the Wales Office
@UKGovWales
- excellent appointment
Mission complete. An SUV-load of medical aid, all funded by generous public donations, delivered to this warehouse in Krakow in Poland to be transferred to Lviv in 🇺🇦 36 hour journey from Monmouthshire to Krakow door to door
@hannahhjjarvis
@BridgetoUnityUK
We’re desperately sad to announce the death of our friend and colleague Cllr Peter Clarke. County councillor for Llangybi since the 1980s, he was the father of our council and will be dearly missed by so many in Monmouthshire. A life lived to the full and a great loss to us
The public followed the rules even though some were unable to say goodbye to dying loved ones or forced to endure a miscarriage alone. I hope the Prime Minister is reflecting tonight on whether a government he leads can ever regain the trust and confidence of the British public
It’s vital
@WelshGovernment
keeps its promise to children that schools would be the very last aspect of our society to close. It’s vital that all schools remain open to all pupils. They’ve suffered the most in this pandemic despite being least at risk
I remain disappointed that children’s books are deemed as ‘not essential’ during a period of lockdown when schools are closed. This, from my local supermarket today.
As pupils break up for the summer, a massive thank you to all our teachers and school staff for going above and beyond in supporting children and young people in
@MonmouthshireCC
schools. Hope you all enjoy a well deserved break over the summer!
Along with other councils across the UK we’re working hard to identify suitable accommodation for Afghan families. Please get in touch if you’re aware of any
It’s 11 days since
@WelshGovernment
indicated primary schools would likely reopen for youngest pupils from w/c 22 Feb. Three days left before half term and they still haven’t published operational guidance for schools. Day by day prompt reopening is becoming less likely
Delighted to welcome
@OliverDowden
to
#Usk
this morning supporting our campaign for a green, innovative, caring and inclusive
#Monmouthshire
The choice in this election is between our local Conservative team or a Labour-run council
Absolutely delighted with the news that all pupils in
#Monmouthshire
can return to full time education in September- vital for their education and family cohesion. The brave but right decision. Well done and thank you
@wgmin_education
@Kirsty_Williams
Good luck to everyone in Monmouthshire returning to school this week and thank you to our teachers and school staff for getting schools ready while maintaining hub provision and distance learning
@MonmouthshireCC
When I was Leader of
@MonmouthshireCC
we never had a single visit from a Welsh Government minister despite inviting them. Today’s was the third visit from the First Minister since May. Glad they’ve discovered where Monmouthshire is
Today I had the privilege of being the first to congratulate
@maryannbwales
on becoming the new Leader of
@MonmouthshireCC
and the first ever woman to fill the role. My Conservative group will be a constructive opposition and critical friend
Mae Cyngor Sir Fynwy newydd ethol ei Arweinydd newydd, sef y Cyngh. Mary Ann Brocklesby
Monmouthshire County Council has just elected its new Leader, Cllr Mary Ann Brocklesby
People are dying, children out of school, our economy declining, our mental health is shot, people are struggling to comply with these tough lockdown rules, meanwhile
@WelshGovernment
has been sat on 200,000 vaccine doses for a fortnight 😡😢
So proud of my friend, colleague and now MS
@Peter4Monmouth
elected with one of the highest votes of any candidate in Wales with over 15,000 votes. So privileged to have worked with an amazing team of councillors and activists in
@MonmouthCA
over the past seven weeks
Thank you to our teachers for a very successful return to school in
#Monmouthshire
this week with lots of subtle changes to reduce risk but maintain a comforting environment. We now need a plan ASAP from
@WelshGovernment
to enable a full return to school in September
Really constructive meeting tonight with UK Government
@RobertJenrick
and senior council leaders across the UK about how we can offer sanctuary to many more Afghans at risk of persecution. Pleased we can work together and take a lead
Last Christmas was a misery for so many people who followed the rules to keep vulnerable relatives safe. The public are rightly angry about this. We urgently need honesty from No.10 about precisely what happened, who was there and an apology from the PM.
Delighted that
@MonmouthshireCC
members have unanimously agreed my motion for a 50% gender target for next year’s local elections, making us an even more inclusive and representative council
You wouldn’t want to be a Tory today and especially a Tory in an area where you have a critical council by-election.
All eyes will on rural Devauden, Monmouthshire tonight.
If Labour gain the seat, they will have a working majority on the County Council.
#VoteLabour
Grateful to my colleagues who have re-elected me as Leader of the Conservative Group on Monmouthshire County Council. Really looking forward to working with new Deputy Leader
@Paul4Chepstow
and new Chief Whip
@CllrLisaDymock
A 5 mile travel ban for meeting friends and family will let people travel from one side of Cardiff to the other but in rural Wales won’t let many people travel to their nearest town or village. There’s more to Wales than the cities and South Wales valleys
@WelshGovernment
I have always supported, indeed promoted the rules laid down in a Wales during the crisis. I welcome that families will now be able to meet, but
@fmwales
the over cautious 5 mile radius really discriminates against our rural communities, please reconsider.
Still hearing complaints about temporary closure of the recycling centres. Is it really that much of a hardship? Compare your sacrifices with those of key workers and just
#StayHomeSaveLives
We set an ambitious target last summer to make Monmouthshire Wales’ first gender balanced council. Delighted that as a result of action taken by both conservatives and labour we have exactly 50:50 split
@WelshLGA
@WENWales
@cwowomen
@WalesCWO
I've had my head in a spreadsheet so sorry if this is old news but I make Monmouth Wales' first gender balanced council. Massive progress in the last five years off the back of an ambitious target 👏
Thank you to
@NickServini
and
@BBCWalesNews
for the opportunity to share the views and frustrations of the many Monmouthshire residents that I and my team have been listening to in recent days
I was a kid growing up in Ely during the last riots- poverty was high & prospects were low & we’re back there again. We’ve never properly tackled poverty here. Welsh Govt & local services can mitigate it but capacity reduced with cuts & levers to eradicate remain in Westminster
Fed up of these attention-seeking celebrity witch-hunts, particularly against councillors, most of whom are not professional politicians but focussed on hardwork in their community for all their residents, not just Tory voters
A sad day for Monmouthshire as we said a final farewell to our much loved friend, the Father of our Council, Peter Clarke. Beautiful tributes in a packed church and the chance to share memories at the Glen yr Afon
Everyone should be free to campaign for whatever political cause they like but this group continues to criminally deface road signs and other public property across Gwent. It’s time the group faced action for its anti-social behaviour
Really proud to see
@LauraJ4SWEast
take up her seat in
@SeneddWales
hitting the ground running and not holding back in questioning Ministers including calling for a full return to school in September. She’ll be a brilliant representative for
#Monmouthshire
and south east Wales
We have now selected Conservative candidates in 28 of our most winnable seats for
#Monmouthshire2022
a diverse range of high calibre community activists all chosen on merit. 15 women, 13 men. 18 seats to go - still time to get involved
@WelshConserv
@MonmouthCA
@WalesCWO
If you’re going to ask residents for their vote you should at least give them the courtesy of saying what you’d do for their ward instead of this generic tat. Proud our candidates are doing bespoke literature talking directly to their residents
@MonmouthCA
#LocalElections2022
Thinking of our friend Bob Greenland who passed away a year ago today. Deputy Leader of
@MonmouthshireCC
for 14 years over half the Council’s existence. His impact on the county is beyond measure. Thoughts with his family
@WelshConserv
@MonmouthshireCA
Many thanks to
@WelshConserv
councillors from all over Wales for electing me to lead the Welsh Conservative Councillors’ Association. Our councillors do a great job in their communities and we’re looking forward to working closely together
@CCACllrs
@Conservatives
Today
@SaraLlanover
and I took up our seats as Leader and Deputy Leader of
@MonmouthshireCC
in our chamber for the first time as we held our final full council meeting before May’s local elections
It’s amazing what treasures get brought to our tips. Today
@Jane4MCC
opened our second Reuse Shop at our household waste and recycling centre in Caerwent and all income will be spent planting trees in
#Monmouthshire
Many thanks to the Monmouthshire Conservative team for electing me to lead them for another year. It’s a privilege and a delight to work with such hardworking and dedicated councillors
The under 40s have made massive sacrifices to keep older and vulnerable people safe despite minimal risk to themselves. As we reopen society
@WelshGovernment
must consider easing those restrictions which will help younger people’s mental health
After almost six months off school, I hope conditions allow a full return without social distancing from September - for the mental, physical and educational needs of our children and so exasperated parents can return to work
Persistently appointing English MPs to the Wales Office while local talented, hardworking and Welsh speaking MPs like
@DavidTCDavies
are sat on the backbenches is damaging to
@Conservatives
Welsh credentials. We’re supposed to have moved on since the 1990s.
I’m not usually one to praise the Labour Party but to go from this to 54% female councillors is a remarkable achievement and contributed to Monmouthshire’s 50:50 gender balance. This does not happen naturally. It takes leadership 👏🏻👏🏻
Great morning visiting the energetic team
@CaldicotLC
and the work they do to support the wellbeing of local residents - as we consider proposals to invest in the leisure centre
@MonLeisure
@MonmouthshireCC
With no leaflets to bundle, envelopes to handwrite or stuff, action days to organise, volunteers to harass and worst of all no Line of Duty, I don’t recognise this Sunday evening
Delighted with this news. The lockdown has taken its toll on people’s mental and physical health. In
#Monmouthshire
we’ll be working to reopen our leisure centres as soon as we can
@MonLifeOfficial
@Mon_Active
A pitstop in Czech Republic after 19 hours of travelling from Monmouthshire. Off to the Ukrainian refugee camp today to deliver medical supplies after dropping off some medical kit at a charity hub near Auschwitz
@BridgetoUnityUK
@hannahhjjarvis
Great lunch out supporting Monmouthshire’s hospitality industry at the Greyhound Inn near Llantrisant with
@SaraLlanover
Please support our county’s great local pubs!
Congratulations to all Monmouthshire young people who have received their A Level results today - the culmination of years of hard work. A debt of gratitude to teachers
@LearnWithMCS
@Caldicot_Sch
@chepstowschool
@KingHenrySchool
for vast volume of work involved in grading
Really proud to see
@MonmouthshireCC
doing more than almost any other council in Wales to accommodate refugees from Afghanistan. Please keep the offers of 3-6 bed properties coming. Thanks to our team led by
@Lisa4Elms
👏🏻
It’s impossible to overstate how challenging the lockdown has been for many parents struggling to juggle work and childcare. This can’t go on. Anything other than a full return in September risks mental health, educational and economic consequences
Today we lost a close member of our
@MonmouthshireCC
and
@MonmouthCA
family, long-standing Chepstow councillor David Dovey. He was a kind man who took such pride in his community. Our thoughts are with his wife Steph and their family
Schools in Wales are already underfunded by hundreds of pounds per pupil compared to those in England, it’s vital
@WelshGovernment
allocates this consequential to education - especially important for border communities like
@MonmouthshireCC
@pritchar13
@WelshGovernment
I respectfully disagree. In Monmouthshire all our meetings have been hybrid for several years & we get up to 90% in person attendance for most meetings but the role of a councillor is accessible to younger, often busier, people. We can’t go back to the days of councils of old men
