Probaaaation?? Nah nah nah nah nah. Had this been the other way around there’s no way his sentence would be so light. We have to be as LOUD against the abuse of our men as we are against the abuse of our women. This is UNACCEPTABLE!
Disappointing take particularly from a "Caribbean Law" Twitter profile.
We should be encouraging our people to challenge any rules/policies that fail to give us autonomy over our personal image and seeking to incite change that empowers us and reinforces pride in our heritage.
@DahReeORH
I actually agree with the school wanting to maintain a certain image for young black men in a world that judges us based on our looks long before anything else.
I see it as preparation for the real world; not black v black at all.
I really hope that we can finally see the reform that we so urgently need in this country actually being realised. There’s no way that these girls should be coming out of GIS in a worse position than where they started. It’s like you’re streamlining them for Dodds at this point.
You were well aware before coming to this foreign country that you’d be required to test, quarantine or isolate when necessary. Stop coming here to disregard our laws & public health policies. If you want to do as you like, stay in your own damn country! If not, follow the rules!
Then come February wunna talking bout Black History and African Awareness and got the children dressing up and all of a sudden you see the beauty in bantu knots.
I believe in the importance of hearing “both sides” just as much as the next attorney but let us not behave as though the criminal justice system has done well to protect women from abuse. It is largely inefficient and there are countless examples of this all over the world.
When will we amend/repeal discriminatory laws like the buggery offence under the Sexual Offences Act or the fact that gay/lesbian couples cannot get married nor can their marriages be recognised in Barbados under the Family Law Act?
#UPDATE
: Barbados amends guidelines for its remote working visa programme - includes partner clause; came amid concerns of discrimination against LGBT persons as it previously indicated spouse as man & woman - as per domestic law; PM Mia Mottley addressed issue in moments ago
I really feel all witness statements should be transcribed on a computer. Some of these police officers write worse than some doctors on a prescription 😩
The fraternity really lost a good man. I’m gutted. Mr. Cumberbatch was one of few lecturers at UWI I felt was really patient with students and cared about their success and wellbeing. Even as he sat on the bench of the Court of Appeal, he was always there & willing to help. 💔
Would be great if the investigation went further to find out why it is the PDD can’t get applications approved/rejected, as the case may be, after 8-11 years.
We want business owners to follow the letter of the law but ya would definitely dead waiting bout here.
You throw a vulnerable 18 year old out to the streets only for them to feel abandoned and for the streets to take them and turn them into hardened criminals and. then. what. Your Worship?
What was he charged with? 🥴 $6M JMD cannot even begin to be enough for 50 years without trial especially for a charge he probably wouldn’t have even been sentenced to 50 years for had he been found guilty. I don’t even have the words to describe this level of judicial negligence
The Government has offered to pay $6 million as compensation to George Williams, who spent 50 years – or “his entire working life” – in prison without a trial before his release in 2020.

Honestly being a lawyer means having 42,000 thoughts in your brain at any given time and having to act on each of them *immediately* because if you don’t you WILL forget and then randomly remember 2-3 weeks later. 😩
Often times in this field we often feel overworked and under appreciated but every now and then we encounter clients who go out of their way to show gratitude for our service. Reignites the fire inside. 🙏🏽
If you want to address the calibre of Attorneys being produced today the issue to be addressed can’t be what courses a student chooses to study for the LL.B. You need to look at the modes of assessment. The area of law shouldn’t matter. Critical analysis is a general requirement.
“The Chief Justice has lambasted the law programme at the University of the West Indies (UWI), saying it was suffering from “intellectual attrition” and was only interested in “getting people over the bar”.”
Chief Justice slams law at UWI
Have we learned nothing after all this time?
Why prepare our children to live in a world they don't deserve to live in instead of fighting to change it so that they don't have to suffer the way we and our ancestors did?
Smh West Indians does want to hoot and holler about how the USA treats refugee immigrants but here we are being xenophobic, heartless and nonempathetic now that Venezuela needs our help.
To this day I don't understand how kites does stop people from sleeping.
A kite could stop my eyes from shutting when them ready? 😂😂
If anything the noise does add to it 🥲.
Happy y'all gonna get relieved though.
When will the Constitution be amended to protect a person’s entitlement to fundamental rights and freedoms regardless of their sexual orientation?
When will LGBTQ+ couples be able to adopt children and start their own families?
Nelson’s statue has no place in the middle of the National Heroes Square. Not only is he not a hero, but he was a racist man who was against the abolition of slavery. We are an independent nation and we have no need to honour his memory in that way. 1/2
The Overall Winner was Harvard Law School.
The Cave Hill Team was also awarded the Best Memorial for the Complainant, Best Memorial for the Respondent, Best Overall Memorial and Ms Kara John was awarded the Best Orator in the Grand Finals. 🎉🎉
Tbh we have all experienced enough Hurricane seasons and emergency protocols for people to still be complaining that there was less impact than expected. I mean it happens EVERY year!
Y’all SEE these systems DEVASTATE our sister islands, yet y’all disappointed we were spared.
When Attorneys serve me documents the day before a hearing that they filed months in advance I does don’t even feel to enter my appearance. I find das disrespect and time wasting.
We need to revise and properly enforce the law against abusers because people’s lives are at risk. I’ve been cringing thinking about people who are forced to be at home with their abusers during this pandemic tbh.
I hate for my boyfriend to pay for *anything* that is not a gift to me. I generally don’t like to feel dependent on anyone and I don’t ever want to be in a position where somebody could remind me what they have done for me, so I rather pay for my own Masters. Engagement ring pls!
Women get restraining orders today and show up dead the next day. How people supposed to feel protected by the law when situations like those exist far too often?
Primary custodian ≠ full custody. It means there’s joint custody, but primary care and control of the child(ren) rests with her. Meaning she has them most of the time, and the child support should actually reflect that. He shouldn’t get to shirk responsibility for his kids’ care
So many archaic laws want amending or repealing. So many flaws in the justice system to be eradicated or remedied. So many far more disruptive social ills to be taken care of and y’all want to fine or put people in 𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒐𝒏 for leaving out their kites???
Stupse.
So it was legally settled that Johnny did abuse Amber… the suit just says she doesn’t have the right to talk about it. Let’s be clear. That’s what y’all are fighting for.

Two years ago, today.
I was so excited to have made it on the other side of what was the most difficult academic journey I had ever been on. Well, the journey definitely didn’t stop there. It’s been tough, no doubt, but ah gotta push and go through all de way 💪🏾
Matters take literal years to be adjudicated sometimes. It would never be fair to have people on remand for years only to be found innocent (in some instances). Neither do we have the capacity to hold all those accused on remand.
We seem to find money we “don’t have” for a lot of other less historically symbolic and culturally important things. I’m sure people would volunteer to move that statue.
If we wish to preserve history, the Barbados Museum can have it, but move the eyesore out of Bridgetown.
Law is a profession that requires continuous reading and learning, regardless of the area. You can’t learn everything in school; and the learning does not end once you graduate. In fact, you NOW got to learn on your feet when you get out.
The criminal justice system has failed both women and men in cases of abuse tbh. Of course the stats are clear on women being victinms of abuse at a much larger, more alarming rate, but it has failed and continues to fail miserably.
@DjHutchy246
@JusJayKing
Music aside, I feel conflicted…
First and foremost, someone was murdered. That much is clear…
BUT the resources required on both sides for a retrial after all this time? 🤯
Furthermore, given said right to fair trial, can that realistically be afforded now without prejudice?
Do the programs need tweaking? Absolutely. But it’s NOT just UWI and it has nothing to do with not choosing to study Trust law (lol, tf?). To suggest that the program is easy to pass in its current state is insulting to students who work their butts off to pass the Bar.
Good day Bajan Twitter. Does anyone know of any charities or organizations who are donating food items to needy persons at this time? Please DM me, I know someone who needs your help. 🙏🏽
@Cliverts23
@NyshRocks
Well personally I think the legislation could have been a bit clearer regarding what constitutes “renovated”, particularly whether it refers to a partial or complete renovation.
@dickie_habiru
Yes, he absolutely can. Submission within the context of a marriage does not mean “do whatever I say how I say when I say no matter what it is.” You do not own a woman whether she is your wife or otherwise and bodily autonomy is to be maintained.
The problem is that when conversations are being had about the removal of harmful and archaic laws, the progressives among us are not the ones holding the seats of power to amend or repeal those laws.
All I want for my birthday, for Christmas, even for Emancipation & Kadooment Day, is for the people at CAIPO to be on the same page so that the information they give to people doing business with them is consistent and more imporantly CORRECT. Das all :(
@CheyneJoness
Lol I feel like it ain’t gine save no time because it’s not the “do you want to continue” part that does tek long. Most people does be ready to done. It’s the children and the division matrimonial assets. That will always take long once parties can’t agree on terms.
Definition of backlog: Just petitioned the court for a Divorce, got a hearing date in April of 2020.
A struggle out here to leave your spouse and all.... don’t get married people, it’s a trap
Furthermore, imo the LEC program needs addressing more so than the LL.B. I’ve always felt like that program barely prepared us for practice in the real world.
Come on. If in 1992 men and women were thought to generally only have vaginal intercourse and the ONLY way two men can have intercourse is anally, how can you conclude that making buggery illegal is not discriminatory because it was not defined as an act specifically between men?
If there’s one thing I hate about the digital era, it’s this idea that people are always to be accessible. People have no discretion anymore as to what is an appropriate time to conduct business anymore.
I have business hours. Unless there is an emergency, please respect them!
