One of the biggest things that people don't get when doing these lighting. Games from this era did not use modern lighting, with most environments having 0 lighting with everything being hand painted with vertex colors. and there was real time lighting it was done per vetrex.

Apparently the first ever US re-release of Gimmick! was announced yesterday along side other classic SUNSOFT things like a full Hebereke remake and a full color version of Trip World.

The difference is Sonic's changes are making the 2D art look like the outdated 3D models first appeared in Shadow 05. Mario's model was redone from scratch in Odyssey onwards to be as close to Shigehisa Nakaue's Art as possible.

People can talk smack about the most miniscule and tiny design changes for Sonic but then at the same time literally no one noticed that they straight up made Mario shorter in his recent renders

Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts' look was said to be inspired by the lowpoly models of the N64 games. This made me wonder what it would look like if they still went for this direction whilst looking like their classic designs, so I tried a little experiment! I think it looks neat!
Also for Peppy but also for Slippy I made their shared 1P results screen! This here is the uncompressed version of the image without text. There's alot of references I put in here. See if you can find them all!

The reason why it's so off is that each games' animations where built off of each other. And the first NSMB was built off of 64DS so they where using a jumping animation made to be seen in all angles an didn't change it to look better at the side.

Ub Iwerks did basically all of the main animation AND design work on Mickey Mouse AND Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and was the person who Co-Created Mickey. He very rarely ever gets credited with alot work being attributed to Walt.
He animated Steamboat Willie all on his own.
Besides the typical animation work for characters helped out with I made King Dedede's 1p Result Image! Attached is a full uncompressed version of the image. You might notice some easter eggs that are unseeable in the game.

Now that this had been shown in an ad, I'm going to talk about this.
I despise how Diddy looks in the movie. He has to be the most redesigned character and for what feels like no reason.
Most notably his separated eyes look super weird, especially since koopas don't have them.

clearly you don't know the lore of dk and how dk island has been a sacred place for the kongs for generations meaning the giant dk head was made mostly likley by the kong's themselves as a monument. 🤓

Update! Aaron Hammerstrom has confirmed this was the art he was given as reference. Plus someone pointed out that the select art from R seems to be drawn over this specific art piece.
This is without a doubt the original Metal Knuckles concept art from Sonic R!
Cool "Metal Knuckles" model sheet from the "Sonic Superstars" artbook. It's weird since it doesn't match any of the other modern concept art in the game, instead much closer to the ones found in "Sonic Adventure" by Uekawa (who designed him). SEGA is known to keep old refs.
I happened to find a brand new airbrushed image by Takahiro Kanie of Donkey Kong Land! Takahiro Kanie had been known to make these for JP puzzles for the SNES games but never for land!

I can answer this. Mario odyssey uses alot of unique shaders ontop of basic pbr maps. Something like the models resource understandably can't have anything like that be included in a model file. However because of that new 3D artists use him with just base pbrs would look odd
We didn't need to spend months recreating the SGI Banjo model for a 1P image you see for 3 seconds in smash remix but we did anyways. Huge thanks to

tis a shame in someways. But it's also kind of expected? The game looks like an up-scaled resolution 3DS game, and not in the way people joke about with the mainline games.
I've been kinda noticing less and less ads for Pkmn games, I genuinely think it's purposeful.
DKC: Return to Crocodile Isle got me in a really K.Rool mood so I made a quick little render with the Smash Ultimate model.

Now seems to be a good time to announce with all the stuff in here to announce that I'm now officially the lead artist for Mother Squared! I've been doing alot of extra work helping to refine the style and sprites of the game. Most notably Ness has been completely redesigned! 🌏
This Japanese collage poster from the 90s has a DKC environment render with a flooded mine-shaft in the bottom left which I can't find anywhere else and there isn't even anything like this in game.

The origin of the idea came from the classic games where eggman wasn't originally meant to be "evil" he wanted to progress the and make the world better for his fellow humans. His methods of doing so where just very morally dubious. Makes alot of sense in that og context.

Unsure for Mario for Luigi shoots fireballs with simular expression in Allstars + SMW, although it it might be coincidental tbh.
I think the best explanation is they tried to keep the amount of alt faces low but wanted to show exertion so they just reused their hurt faces
The last thing I wanted to mention that I worked on this update was I got to make the two new polygons for Falco and Ganondorf!

Sorry for the lack of art lately, been spending all my art time on cool projects I can't show off yet. However, I just finished a piece for a University assignment that I was really proud of and wanted to share. A 90s CGI Re-imaging of "Persistence of Memory" by Salvador Dali ⏱️
Does any info on this? A friend and I discovered a lost Korean Donkey Kong game titled simply "Donkey Kong 2". According to the listing on danawa () It was a PC game released on September 11th, 2000.

I try not to go on here and straight up complain about stuff. But stuff like this is genuinely embarrassing, Origins should have been such an easy win but is somehow one of the most slapped together sonic games in recent years.

Whist I 100% agree. I think the fact that they were messing around with something like this shows that they really know what they are doing. It already felt obvious with the final game but this ontop of the new 2D shows they are really in-touch internally with what Mario is.
I'm excited to see the movie, and what I've heard of the soundtrack here is great, but it frustrates me to see how many iconic composers are being uncredited. David Wise for his DKC work, Grant Kirkhope's DK64 work, Super Show's music staff etc

This was actually from a japanese famitsu guide and not the manual. Third party guides like this sometimes have unique art made for it by artists with little reference material. He never had glasses in his main offical art or the sprites.

What you described can be confusing but it's not that uncommon in alot of media. The things that makes me upset is when they take a unique character and then ""redesign"" them to look exactly like another!

If itoi himself wanted to work on one I would want it. But if he wasn't involved or even just there as supervisor in a smaller role I wouldn't want it. It's very much a creator driven work and if he himself is not involved I wouldn't be very interested.
Last thing I wanted to share that I worked on this Remix update was that I made Dedede's home stage of Mt. Dedede! It took alot of time and effort to make it but I'm really happy with the end result!

As a little bonus here's a unused higher detail full body model of Kazooie! Alot of tricks and down scaling of it had to be done to get the duo running at a good frame rate.
