It's been a while since we've shared a project update, but you'll be getting lots of info about our progress very soon... This is just a preview of what's to come!
The file select screen will include party member icons, party leader level, current location, total gameplay time and the date of saved game, in order to more efficiently distinguish your save files. We are also adding localization options to display dates in different formats.
Here's how you can expect the status menu to look in MOTHER². Player stats are presented in an easy-to-read fashion and adhere to the overall UI consistency we are striving to achieve. Pre-alpha testing and debugging is also going smoothly!
Development this year has been spent continuing a smooth transition to the Godot engine. Here are some comparisons of MOTHER²'s battle system, from additions/refinements made in early 2021 to pre-alpha testing this month, featuring another returning enemy from MOTHER 1.

Here's a sneak peak of the new inventory screen. Each item displays an icon and description. You'll notice that each player can hold four extra items, bumping the count from 14 to 18. Key items will also be assigned to their own menu as to not clutter up player inventories.

A lot of what makes the original MOTHER 2/EarthBound enjoyable are the various customization options. We have already implemented a number of these and are working on developing even more. What sort of additions would you like to see?

What are you hoping to see?
Who needs a run button? Take your time and walk everywhere with disabled running throughout most (maybe all) of the game. We have implemented an amazing new game mechanic that the more items you carry, the slower you will travel, just like real life!!
Our talented team is excited to premiere our “Video Relaxant” update on Saturday, June 18th at 1pm PT/4pm ET. In the meantime, be sure to catch the upcoming 2022 Mother Direct on Sunday, June 12th at 12pm PT/3pm ET! It will be an eventful month for the Mother community!

You think just because an NPC joins your party that they're invulnerable? Think again! Enemies are able to attack anyone they want... it's only fair, right? So make sure to heal your NPC allies...

It will be similar. Jeff will have a 'Gadgets' command that allows him to use any of the reusable items that can fixed and only he can operate, so they are not included with the normal items in the 'Goods' menu.

There will be additional battle mechanics to be included besides rhythm combos. The ability to turn enemies around is one example and is planned to be implemented soon.

The MOTHER² team strongly believes that leveling up should be a jolly and momentous occasion, but we will revisit this. Please keep in mind that footage shown is not final.

That option will only arise if the party’s inventory is full and must give up an item to make room for the dropped one, which is a fairly rare occurrence. If there is room, the party will automatically take the dropped item.

Most of the dialogue will remain the same, as Marcus Lindblom's English localization remains important to include. However, additional dialogue is being written to eliminate gameplay confusion and expand the relationship between the characters further.

Likely not. Bringing back the combo system was one of the earliest concepts for this project and parts of the game have to be rebalanced to accommodate; use of the combo system also is optional, just like in MOTHER 3. However, your idea may be considered later on.

We use Godot for development. There are other software/programming languages listed in the form that we recommend you are familiar with as well if you wish to apply.

The team has planned for just MOTHER². If there are multiple names it would cause unnecessary confusion, as people may think they're different games (or maybe the same game with different content) when in actuality this wouldn't be the case.
