I used to agree with this take until I realized the real problem is just that Sonic's current stock 3D model sucks and trying to base 2D art on it (Like some IDW artists used to do) gives ugly results. Sonic's design was meant to work in a 3D space since the very beginning:
Sonic is a character that's just built for 2D animation, you can obviously do it in 3D too but 2D is his natural habitat.

SpongeBob's animation these days has the exact opposite problem to what it had a decade ago. Everything's over-animated, there's no room to breathe or time to rest. EVERY single frame needs to be as wacky as possible. It just feels forced.
