My guess is the game designers wanted this to "look cool" with makeshift silencers. I'd assume it would just explode or worse in rl. I'm surprised they didn't take the oil can silencer approach with Modern Warfare 2019. That seems a little more believable to me.

Honestly that means that archiving will be harder and sites like these will be lost under the oppression of companies. Even the original emuparadise admin said he was from India. So I assume many people didn't have access to a lot of these older games in other countries as well.
