Heartbroken to be reporting this. The planet is a worse place for this man's departure. Pat Smullen was one of the most decent human beings I've had the honour to meet. He has been an inspiration over the past 2 1/2 years. Thoughts with Frances & their kids Hannah, Paddy & Sarah.
The man who trades as
@AnaglogsDaughtr
and furnishes us with all those wonderful racing snaps on here. Posing with the Unibet Gold Cup jockeys. All four of em!
Darver Star, Champion Hurdle 3rd & Irish Champion Hurdle runner-up, just made a successful fencing debut at Punchestown. Unfortunately it had to be watched on a split screen on
@RacingTV
with zero commentary - priority given to a nov hcp chase at Huntingdon. The mind boggles.
Barry Geraghty checks out of the 2020 Cheltenham Festival with a near 50% strike rate. Saint Roi’s win leaves him on 5-11 for the week in the clubhouse. Sure he’s still only 40.
The Tommy Tiernan show keeps knocking it outta the park. This interview with
@JamesLeonard85
was enthralling. What a man. Best talk show on TV - bar none. People with stories to tell rather than something to sell & an interviewer with a bit of humanity not clung to a script. 👏👏
"There's nothing glamorous about it, every day is a struggle"
James Leonard, who now has a Masters in Criminology, talks to Tommy Tiernan about his recovery from drug addiction.

Padraigh Griffin. The best footballer many of us ever laid eyes upon. A diminutive colossus, he was a wizard with a ball in his hands whose magic entertained us for years - how he made us cheer. He was also a wonderful human. Our hearts bleed for Debbie & all the gang.

Clonakilty's Padraig Griffin being chased by UCC's Seamus Moynihan during the 1996 Cork SFC final that Clon won 1-9 to 0-10. That victory ended Clon's long wait for their eighth county SFC title, the last before it coming in 1952.
Snapshot there of how GB jump racing, incl its handicappers, gets carried w/ itself before reality hits. "A monstrous performance!" says
@MCYeeehaaa
of Clan Des Obeaux after he beat Clondaw Castle (hcpr), Native River (btn 30l in Gold Cup) & Tiger Roll (x-country horse) in a G1.
What a moment. Rachael Blackmore has just become the first female jockey to win a championship race at the Cheltenham Festival courtesy of a barnstorming Honeysuckle performance in the Champion Hurdle. Great day for the sport!
Colin Keane's last 14 meetings in Ireland:
21 winners
6 doubles
2 trebles

Wrote today's
@RacingPost
column (€) on how his sizzling September is setting up an Irish jockeys' title thriller w/Shane Foley:
And let’s not forget Henry de Bromhead, what a trainer. Gold Cup (1-2), Champion Hurdle, Champion Chase & Grand National in the same season. The grandest of grand slams.
Highest attendance to date recorded at the Dublin Racing Festival today, 14,204, a 13pc increase on 2019. Bookmakers' turnover grew yr-on-yr by 30pc to €1,017,732 while the Tote turnover was also up 21pc to €166,967.
Gold Cup and Grand National-winning Robbie Power has revealed he will finish his riding career after partnering Teahupoo at Punchestown tomorrow. Great rider who has had a wonderful career.
Aidan O’Brien on withdrawal of Fleeting on vet advice @ Santa Anita. “We were happy with her and felt she trotted up the way she always does, but the vets weren’t happy with her and we respect their opinion. When you come to these jurisdictions you must abide by their rules.”
The invincible woman. Rachael Blackmore becomes the first female jockey ever to win the Grand National. What a time to be alive! Horse and rider in absolute harmony every single step of the way.
When we pursued
@JohnnyDineen
for Upping The Ante myself &
@DavidJenningsRP
were chuffed he received our advances favourably. He isn’t quite as good as we hoped, though. He’s far better. His honest & informative style is disarming. Best episode yet. 👇
Punchestown manager Conor O’Neill admits disappointment over Durkan Chase coverage on Racing TV. Hardly a ringing endorsement from the chair of HRI’s media rights committee, and St Stephen’s Day to come. Lamentable situation.
Sat down w/ Pat Smullen to discuss life after his cancer diagnosis. He was always someone I admired, but now I’m in absolute awe of him. He is an inspiration & I’ve tried to do him justice in this wk’s

Breaking! New government policy. To save Christmas, we’re gonna break the economy. Enhanced emphasis on kids’ education also. They’ll need to be well educated cos they’re gonna be the ones paying for all this for the next two decades. System working well - send more money!

earlier after Danny won on Jacamar that he reckoned how that race unfolded would have the King George jockeys all of a sudden rethinking tactics. Suffice to say, not enough of them did.
Lot of love on here this morning for
@LydiaHislop
Fully deserved. An absolute credit to her profession. Owned the broadcast interview scene this week. 👏👏👏
Horse Racing Ireland has confirmed that two owners per horse will be allowed attended the races from Monday following publication of the government's Living with Covid-19 roadmap. Good news. Pre-meeting health screening & temperature checking will obviously be required.
Well done Danny Mullins - used his noggin when everyone else went at it at different stages. He has always been someone who rides with his head. Asterion didn’t deserve that slap. Jumped so well for him & just came down too steep. Credit to Bryan Cooper for holding him together.
Gordon Elliott's return to the frontline of our sport is imminent. Some are glad he'll be back, others less so. I sat down with him to hear what he had to say. I think he is entitled to a chance to make amends. Read for yourself before judging.
@RacingPost
That marks the end of this season’s
#TommyTiernanShow
Congrats to the man himself (don’t know if he’s on here) & to the researchers & production team who pull it all together. It was the highlight of the week, every week, without fail. The most authentic chat show on the planet.
Great story behind Belvoir Bay's win in
@BreedersCup
Turf Sprint. She was missing for 2 days when released into the wild during San Luis Rey fire lst yr. Recovered & beat the boys in record time. Reckon Hollywood will come knocking any time now. Won her maiden at Windsor in 2015.
HRI chief executive Brian Kavanagh has confirmed that the dept of agriculture has increased Irish racing's funding to 76.8m in 2021 from €67.2m in 2020, a significant 14% boost for the industry given the challenges faced by Covid-19 and Brexit. Story to follow

Bryony Frost has given Present Man an exceptional ride there. Resisted the temptation to get involved mid-race with On Demand when it so often pays to dominate at Wincanton. Then got em all on the stretch at her discretion. She is some rider.
Have just spoken to Brian Kavanagh & HRI have decided that the NH season in Ireland is over as of Clonmel on March 24. The Irish Grand National meeting & Punchestown festival are cancelled. However, there will be an enhanced NH programme in the autumn & IGN will be run then.
Helen McDonogh, a pioneering figure for female jockeys under maiden name Bryce-Smith, has died. Husband of trainer Des & father of champ jockey Declan, she played a major role with Monksfield & rode him in his last win, 3mths after giving birth to Declan
Given the division, acrimony and rancor that this lamentable saga has triggered, this is a fabulous unifying gesture by Henry de Bromhead and his Knockeen team. Well done to all involved for trying to find a positive way forward & showing some generosity of spirit amid the bile.
After the heartbreak of seeing her pride and joy removed from her care last week, Envoi Allen's devoted groom Seainin Mahon is set to share one last moment with the unbeaten superstar at Cheltenham 🙌
Further incontrovertible evidence at Fairyhouse that AN Other can also train when they are sent the ammo. Jimmy Mangan yesterday, Tom Gibney today. Two fine trainers and fabulous men as well. More of this, please.
The
#TommyTiernanShow
is just about the best non-sport viewing that exists on linear television these days. Unscripted, unsanitised, enlightening, authentic & funny. Everything a talk show is meant to be, and used to be.
Aidan O'Brien has confirmed that the wrong number cloths and riders were aboard Mother Earth and Snowfall in the Fillies' Mile. "I didn't see the race live," O'Brien says, "and when I looked at the replay after it was brought to my attention, I could see straight away."
Gutted to be reporting this. 👇 Robert and Mary Tyner have been mainstays on the racing & p2p scenes for as long as I’ve been following the sport. Two grafters who will be an enormous loss to the game but also to the locality. Biggest yard in Cork.
🗣"I'm tired and burnt out"
Robert Tyner is to wind down his business in Kinsale, County Cork due to being "burnt out from working harder than ever before" and rising costs

Gordon Elliott has issued an apology and explained the background to the controversial photo that emerged online yesterday. Full statement included here.
Lovely to see this gent get some airtime. Mick helped many of us along the way but there’s no doubt that his first protégé was always his best. Well done
@nickluck
for seeking him out.
Jack Kennedy returns from injury at Cartmel tomorrow. Great to see. He suffered a fifth leg fracture at Naas in January. Here's to a clean run for him now. 🤞
Thrilled to see Tony O’Hehir acknowledged for his endeavours as a broadcaster & journalist. Wonderful pro who has long been a trusted counsel and source of wisdom for me. And an absolute gent to boot. ✍️🎥 🎙 👏👏👏
In theory Enable wouldn’t have won that without the mares’ allowance. In reality I suspect she would have. For all that it was an epic spectacle, Frankie was only squeezing her in the final furlong. More superior than his genius made it look. Exceptional partnership.
Plenty understandably getting their knickers in a twist having concluded we won’t be racing until June 29. Don’t think that’s necessarily the case. Racing falls under the Ag department’s remit, same as in France, where racing returns on May 11, long before other sports.
Dublin Racing Festival figs at Leopardstown: Day 2 attendance 12,270, a 5% increase on 2019 & highest Sunday figure in 3yr existence. Also record weekend fig of 26,474. Sunday's bookmakers' take of €899,467 was a 1pc increase on last year. Tote turnover grew 20pc to €187,998.
British horse is allowed to take its chance at the DRF (Ire) and swats away the locals to win loadsamoney. Hard to believe. Thought they weren't able to come into the lion's den compete. 100% record today. Well done Sophie Leech.

Just tuned into ATR’s Kentucky Derby coverage. Don’t know where they’re sourcing it but it’s a proper engaging & polished production. Sometimes you forget what it’s like to watch racing output that doesn’t involve the presenters making it all about themselves. Proper pros.
HRI has announced that the IHRB will now b able to access unlicensed thoroughbred premises with NO notice & committed to rolling out CCTV at all tracks. Previous agreement with ITBA had been for a controversial 24hr notice. Tender for CCTV to begin soon. Story soon on

printed edition takes a hiatus. Tough day on everyone on the team. It's a privilege to work alongside so many skilled & hard-working people with a passion for racing in Britain & Ireland & beyond. "Stay safe, stay healthy & stay home."
Ger’s comments have been accurately reported & they are perfectly valid points to boot. There was a breakdown in communication. It happens & Ger & I have cleared the air. Ger has a serious young talent on his hands in Siskin and so does
@RacingPost
in Mark. Onwards & upwards. 2/2
This wk’s col: Aintree's fences have been lowered, softened & bypassed but this is a rabbit hole that will only hasten the demise of the National. The sport has to stop flagellating itself – we live in an imperfect world & not everything can be ‘fixed’. €
Delighted for Jack Kennedy. Has been such a fantastic talent for so long already & has the humility & decency to match. You can see how much it means to them. Takes some doing to be injured for 2 months & outdo WPM’s man. He & Townend have covered themselves in glory this season.
It’s an emotional moment for the Kennedy family and trainer Gordon Elliott as Jack Kennedy is crowned champion jockey for 2024.

team did its best to pay him a worthy tribute. Thanks to everyone who contributed to an edition bursting with his brilliance. Pick up a copy 2mrw r check it out online now. None behind paywall.
Have no dog in this fight but only greyhound people I kno ❤️ their dogs. Very disappointing to see Soc Dems’ ill-informed, populist attempt to hijack the anti bandwagon. Vital part of rural Ire & provides a purpose for greyhounds. Excellent rebuttal here.
John Gosden says Roaring Lion got hit at the gate and then got a mouthful of dirt, and that was about that. Was the most likely outcome in the circumstances!
Desperate change of fortune for Jack Kennedy 30mins after his Irish Gold Cup victory on Delta Work. He’s 20 years old and has already endured four leg fractures. It’s beyond comprehension.
Further update from
@ihrb_ie
Senior Medical Officer Dr. Jennifer Pugh, with the consent of Jack Kennedy.
"Unfortunately, Jack's injury from

today has been confirmed as a fracture of his right femur. He is expected to undergo surgery tomorrow."
Shocking news emerging that Paddy Dunican, long-serving manager and fiercely staunch advocate for Kilbeggan racecourse, died in tragic circumstances this morning at the age of 61.
30 years watching racing and I’m not sure I’ve seen such warmth & goodwill from the public as there is towards these two. What a pair of heroes. Broken down barriers, lifted spirits. Would like to think they’re not done yet.
This is excellent by Keals, acknowledging how perilous the moral high ground is when we are all humans capable of doing dumb things that we wouldn't want captured on camera. A mark of the man that he is willing to own his role in the vilification of Elliott. Massive respect.
Gary O'Brien just asked Shane Foley on
@RacingTV
how confident he is that he is on the right one of Jessie's two in the next at Sligo. Honestly not sure if that was a loaded question. 😎
Class Turf. Tarnawa a brilliant filly, great ride by Colin Keane & overdue first BC win for His Highness DKW! Magical gallant in second - never went a yard but kept finding. Defeat doesn’t change sentiment of earlier tweet!

Already blown away by Churchill Downs. The back stretch alone is mindboggling.
Some tough mare Put The Kettle On. Henry De Bromhead the only Irish trainer to win the Queen Mother Champion Chase the last decade. Three of them now. He’s not having a bad week.
A lot of effort (& a dollop of midnight oil) from the
@RacingPost
team went into doing some justice to Barry Geraghty’s stellar career. It’s all here on & in tomorrow’s paper.
Latest Upping The Ante campaign in its final throes with next week's Cheltenham Festival looming. It'll be missed as much as the festival itself when it's over. The lads have been tremenjous again this season.

Just to clarify, Mark rang Ger in good faith to do a follow-up piece on Siskin. He has been writing for

The interview with Pat Smullen is no longer behind a paywall, so it is there for all to access. Thanks for all the kind comments, but it is Pat alone who has made the piece worth reading. All I had to do was not make a mess of his message.

Not much I can add that hasn’t already been said about
@dickyjohnson77
The absolute integrity of the man stood out above all else, & there was a lot else. His humility illustrated by his retiring @ Newton Abbot today rather than steal someone else’s thunder at Aintree or Sandown.
HRI confirms 48hr decs are staying. Director of racing Jason Morris: “We acknowledge the concerns of the Trainers & Owners Associations around the timetable for making entries & will explore w/ the IRTA & AIRO whether beneficial changes can be made to the current entry schedule.”
Early plug for this week’s column because I think it’s an important message to convey at this stage. Gordon Elliott is entitled to a fair hearing and his penalty should be proportionate based on the facts, not a response to the court of public opinion. (€)
'The outrage has been unprecedented, but the panel must adjudicate on the basis of the facts'
Public opinion aside, Elliott must now get a fair and proportionate sanction

So overwhelmingly sorry for your loss, Hannah. Pat won the hearts and minds of a nation, and beyond. He was a great jockey but he was an even better man.
BREAKING: The horses owned by Noel and Valerie Moran have not left the Gordon Elliott stable. Noel spoke to the Racing Post this morning and said: ‘’The rumours that we have moved our horses from Gordon’s stable are totally untrue.
Wouldn’t normally reveal content from behind the paywall but this is a non-industry, secondary yarn in today’s col that seems to have gone down well. Will make an exception for the week that’s in it. A hopeless

fan’s first confession.
Two full decades since my last winner - also the last of my claim. Tough little mare who Mark did brilliantly with - I never knew one who could pull so hard for so long & still keep going at the end of it. Where does the time go!
