Claims that the current high incidence of COVID-19 in Spain is due to social norms, cultural traits, family structure or sectoral composition are hard to sustain when we compare the data with that for Portugal and Italy, where all those factors are similar.

Women commute less than men. Using French admin search data, @tlebarbanchon , @rolandrathelot & @alexandraroulet show in @QJEHarvard women accept lower wages than men to work closeby. Worker, not employer, driven. Accounts for 14% of residualised gender gap

1/ Look at the shape of these curves. New York and Madrid had similar epidemics until they spectacularly diverged. In March, both cities were caught by surprise and shut down because of #COVID19 . In September, the situation is under control in NY and alarming in Madrid. Why?

2nd wave of Spain's seroprevalence study on representative random sample of population (>30,000 households, >60,000 people). In 3 weeks prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies only increased from 5% to 5.2% nationally (wave 1: 27 Apr-11 May; 2: 18 May-1 Jun)

Photo shows, before and after, area in front of Madrid’s Atocha train station, minutes away from Retiro Park, Prado Museum and my CEMFI office. There were many like this, popularly called “scalextric” after a popular slot car toy. These places have become so much more liveable.

The appointment of @NezihGuner as new CEMFI Director is fantastic news! @CEMFInews has already been through an amazing 36-year journey led by Rafael Repullo and this signals that many more great years are ahead of us. Thank you both for taking on this leadership role.

We use tract-level rents from ACS and household-level travel (with tract info) from NHTS with Gilles Duranton () to show Alonso-Muth condition in monocentric model holds: distance to centre elasticity of travel = distance to centre elasticity of rents

@jeffrlin Could you point me to an easy-to-use data set that has rents, wages, and distance to centre that would allow students to explore the empirical evidence for the model's predictions? thx

Helpful distinction. Crowding on which pandemics thrive is about forced physical proximity not creating useful interactions. Density on which cities thrive is about chances for useful face-to-face interactions popping up regularly & prompting us to approach one another—when safe

Fantastic evolution since we organised the first UEA Meeting in Toronto in 2006. Almost no urban conferences back then. Hesham Abdel-Rahman organised a couple of urban sessions within the RSAI North-American Meetings, but there was little else

@jessiehandbury @AmySchwartzNY @ProfDiegoPuga @PerssonPetra @TradeDiversion The growth in urban econ conferences in the last ten years is awesome and also overwhelming. From the perspective of a conference organizer it’s worth thinking about adapting to the added competition and ways to differentiate.

Over 50% of Spain’s population now fully vaccinated against Covid (above US, reaching UK) & still vaccinating over 1% of population daily. 99% of pop. over 70 & 90% over 50 fully vaccinated, key in keeping hospitalisations low despite case upsurge, but not out of the woods yet.
