My admiration for the lawyers who crafted their argument on deep principles and historical truth and were not put off the scent by the brutal force of their opponents’ reliance on the apparent correctness of 200 years of flawed “precedent”.
Today marks 31 years since the historic Mabo ruling overturning terra nullius – that Australia was once land belonging to no one.
We remember the dedicated work of Eddie Mabo, whose fundamental role in fighting for and achieving this ruling now sees today marked as “Mabo Day”.

In ordinary times I can understand objections to abrogating the "right" trial by jury. But in the current climate, there is something to be said for giving effect to the right to a speedy trial (on which our record is quite appalling). Are we fetishising one right over another?
