i'm not sure there are hidden variables. imo it's the limits of our tools and frameworks that prevent us from perceiving them. for example, there was a period when the inner workings of an atom were mysterious to us

Completely agree. Simply extrapolating early skeumorphic outputs linearly into the future will mean that you’ll miss what we can do with the new primitives and architecture. Imagine someone dismissing the internet in the mid 90s as nothing more than a new channel for newspapers

I don't think original ideas (ie creativity) is the right criteria. We already have that with generative AI (art). Rather, it should be logic and reasoning. If AI can discover new math and physics without training, I'd consider that AGI
