Went back for a second #Tosca at @E_N_O last night. Pretty full house (packed in the Balcony). Schoolkids in uniform. Three principals you'd be happy to see anywhere. Slashing the #NPO grant, moving the house to the regions? Feels like wilful vandalism.

Mahler 6 with Rattle has been in my life for almost 35 years, since the EMI recording. Then a 1995 Prom with the CBSO, and more recently with the BPO and LSO. Well, here we are again. BRSO this time. Life journeys.

@wmarybeard Gosh, what a moment. You were formative for me, Mary (X course 94-5), in expanding ideas of Classics past, present and future. I knew at the time those seminars were a privilege. It didn't stop them being fun, esp arguing the toss with yr Newnham protegees!

The music world is as full of egos as any other, of course. But it’s also full of collegiality and fellow feeling. In front of me, today, I saw three singers enjoy the success of their colleague, and it made a moment of transcendence no less than Mahler does in the 8th. 🧵/ends

Because I prefer not to remember people in a Mahler 9 sort of way, and somehow saying goodbye like that doesn't tally with his humanist outlook. The filming shows how he did indeed do everything with the eyes. RIP Haitink.

@ianpacemain @HelenRichenda @RoyalAlbertHall @rpoonline That's a curious perspective to me. Large symphonic choruses (of the kind demanded by Mahler, Elgar etc) have always been amateur by organisation, and composers wrote for them accordingly.

I am sad to share news that Benjamin-Gunnar Cohrs has died, aged 58. Ben suffered much, in his health and for his work. That work centred on Bruckner, as an editor, scholar and performer, but he was a man of parts. And he was a kind and gentle soul.

@musicologyman @ianpacemain What did Monteverdi and his patrons think Orfeo was? Many things but 'fundamentally entertainment' seems to fit. Before that, most music was music to pray by, which is the spiritual equivalent. If there's a switch in fundamental intent, it's a Romantic project.
