Absolutely stunning video of one of today's waterspouts in front of the Capo di Leuca area of Apulia. Imagine having such a thing slowly meandering in front of your window for five minutes. Video by Elena Severino.
WOTY for me, at least in Italy
This video comes from Bisacquino as one of yesterday's tornadoes zooms around the countryside. Watch it all, it's worth it! Extremely good video! Video shot by Vincenzo Ragusa
Here's the view from inside the wedge tornado that killed a person and injuried two more in Modica this morning. You can also see what seem to be one or two subvorticies. Video from Esagonoilgiornale
Surveillance footage of yesterday's tornado in NW Apulia, in the Apricena area. As you can see, some damage did occur, now we just need to map it. Unfortunately author and business struck are unknown, so it could be hard to do
I've honestly lost count at this point
This is again the waterspout that arrived in the city of Salerno, from the FB page salernonotizie. Imagine a stronger vortex with all those cars on the road. This could have been a disaster
This has got to be one of the most insane waterspout families ever documented in Italy. Location is Giglio Island (Isola del Giglio), Tuscany, time frame is said to be in the early 1980s
Insane evening starting to unfold: three, violent severe storms are bringing the expected destruction to northern Italy. The western one has giant hail associated with it

Just to make sure we know in what season we're in, this waterspout made landfall in Policastro, Campania region, yesterday. It impacted a beaching facility from where several kinds of objects were lofted. Everybody was unharmed... but this was terrifying to watch! Author unknown
Here is this morning’s tornado in Comiso. A gas station and several businesses and homes got hit. Large hail up to 5 cm has been documented as well Screengrab from Alessandro Distefano
Woke up to a swath of large to giant hail event in the Veneto piedmont plain. Largest hail of the event likely exceeds 10 cm in the Brescia province. Pic by Eliano Bressanelli
ANOTHER! A Meteo4 Verona member observed this impressive tornado between the Verona and Padua provinces. This year is giving us quite the number toll and it's just May 2nd
Comparing the second May 2023 flood with the current ONGOING event shows a grim, catastrophic picture. From ARPAE data this event’s even worse than that one. The above average SSTs of the Adriatic Sea are fueling a developing disaster. I fear the daytime images we’ll see tomorrow
It’s not even 9 AM here in Italy and we already had a landfalling waterspout in Genoa, a possible nighttime tornado and just a few minutes ago this waterspout in Salerno with a likely landfall
Finally we're able to share some info on Saturday's tornado. Rating wise, we get up to (I)F3 and we don't come down from there: multiple weak farmhouses partially collapsed, a couple of concrete outbuildings completely destroyed and one house with heavy first floor damage
The biggest Livorno waterspout in its early stages. You can see the funnel and the water spray of a second one which dissipated and let the other take over increasing in size. At least 7 spouts in total between Pisa and San Vincenzo. Photo by Tamara Macelloni
This is the September 19th, 2021 cyclical tornadic supercell as it approached Lake Garda caught by the Pastrengo webcam owned by Meteo4 Verona. You can see the Carpenedolo F2, its last tornado, underneath it and many classical supercell features
The moments this place in particular got hit. Many people actually got these kinds of high-elevation videos of the tornado coming right at them, which is NOT what they should have done. Video by Lilla Tulipano
Oooh yeah, nothing like a similar-to-a-major-outbreak-event on the anniversary of another major event. Also totally not using this IconD2 model run just because it tosses my house into the Adriatic Sea

@Djpuco
has any of you aver seen this picture before? It's not something you see everyday and it would be exceptional if true for Italy
Video of the tornado by Patrizia Casani, notice how dynamic the funnel is. A pizzeria (Italy jokes ensue, I imagine 🤌) in SE Capena seems to have taken a hit, but so far no damage has been documented
Family of at least two waterspouts in front of Rome/Fiumicino with one of them making landfall (preliminary report) in the last hour. Photo from Meteo Lazio
So, yesterday's event
We've been working hard to understand what happened and this is a preliminary reconstruction. Very interesting damage pattern just before the obvious tornado with convergent/curved straight line winds
Reporting what happened in less than 24 hours between yesterday and today is quite insane, just as much as the event, and we’re nowhere near done especially with the wind. A lot of injuries as well, many due to hail. Two deaths unfortunately. And let’s not talk about the damage
I just learned that Italian storm chasers told people to protect their house from tornadoes by opening the windows when it’s approaching. I cannot believe my ears
Last map for today, I promise. But since we've confirmed a tenth tornado seems right to update the previous. Also, have a collage of all the documented tornadoes from today
Beautiful tornado, much bigger in its early stages. Area should be between Boara Polesine and Vescovana, north of the Adige river north of Rovigo. Photos via Tornado in Italia and by Gianluca Munegato
One of our collaborators, Davide Travaglia, got hammered by more 9 cm hail last night, on the Po Delta. I don't recall ever getting to know about hail this big from that area
OTD in 2017 an absolute spectacle in western Liguria: a family of at least 5 mostly highly photogenic waterspouts developed in front of Sanremo. Unfortunately two made landall in the city (damage was light) with one injured woman
Devastating afternoon between Ascoli Piceno, Teramo and Pescara, where multiple istances of 7 to 9 (maybe more?) cm hail were seen, produced by an amazing supercell
God I love the French correlation coefficient. Moderate CC drop corrisponding to a hail core dropping the first documented instance of large hail in Italy today
Yesterday's tornado in Veneto, here we go
The vortex was produced by a mesovortex along a linear storm and the actual radar-visual comparison is pretty impressive! The tornado remained on the ground for about a mile and hit a couple of farms causing mostly light damage
It doesn’t stop. Cantiano is at over 400 mm of rain in about 6 hours (this map doesn’t give it justice). Reading now of people evacuating on roofs and roads under 2 meters of water due to rivers
UPDATE: tornado outbreak continued this morning with 5 more, 4 in SE Sicily (including a killer wedge) and a waterspout in NE Sardinia. Really impressive event in the last 24 hours
OTD in 2012 I missed this impressive F1 tornado that impacted multiple parts of Venice and the lagoon (Sant’Elena, Certosa, Vignole, Sant’Erasmo, Cavallino-Treporti), caused two injuries and crossed paths with the 1970 F4. The supercell then cycled and produced another F1
Good looking funnel cloud observed by Pietro Contini outside Carpi, Emilia-Romagna region. There are unconfirmed reports of a touchdown. Quite an anomalous thunderstorm day in northern Italy, with many reports of small hail as well
Inside the Rovigo tornado: this guy found himself inside the vortex as it impacted the convenience store and a nearby gas station. Surveys are ongoing and no words on injuries
Impressive radar presentation on the Lombardy storm. At this point it’s useless to play catch up with it on reports, I’ll just let her do her thing. Every one report collected is 10 more coming in
Looking at the pics I saved earlier from the LA supercell, I noticed the pattern described by Skip Talbot in his 2019 Linwood analysis: a smaller and weaker tornadic circulation south of a much bigger/stronger convergence/mesocyclone that then evolves into a much stronger tornado
Okey dokey, we’re getting in range of some higher resolution models and the consensus seems to be for a new severe weather day on Thursday. Pretty good dynamic system, typical mid Summer instability and a very decent wind profile, plus a dryline. Could be interesting
This is probably the best tornado video to come out of Italy this year. Rarely, if ever, have I ever seen subvorticies this well visible in my country. Plus some of the replies are just hilarious
In this second episode of "Italian tornadoes on Tiktok": people driving into tornado debris in the Naples metropolitan area back in May
People, DON'T DO THIS!
