Big moment for me: after 38 years, my final day at the BBC. I've spent more than half my life as transport correspondent, and it has rarely felt like working. Travelled the world, won the prizes, worked with the best in the business, met amazing people. But now I'm off.

@bspb159 @BradshawLSWR @railnigel Like the 442 on your pic. I have the nameplate of the South Today one on my wall at home. Unscrewed it myself just before the train was scrapped.

@chris327759 @RAIL I can say this now Chris: I agree! The budget has been squeezed till the pips squeak. I work with world-class talent, people I am proud to call friends. The issues lie higher up. This is exactly the right time to go, before I turn into a grump moaning about the good old days.

@BBCTomEdwards Tom, dear boy, it’s up to you now to maintain standards: the top BBC journalist with the knowledge and skills. We are in safe hands. They dug out my first ever piece to camera for my leaving video. I was indeed wearing tweed. Tweed is cool.

@chris327759 Very kind. No one will follow me; I’m taking voluntary redundancy so my post has closed. But I’ve done this for more than half my life: it’s an ideal time to step away and do other things that don’t involve being on telly!

@DavidAGraham @railnigel Kind, but I don’t think so. I’m done on the telly, though I have agreed to be on the last private sector SWR train / first renationalised one in May, because I was also on the first one 31 years ago.

@RPMarks Thank you. There are very few genuine transport correspondents left. Hat tip to @BBCTomEdwards - he’s a top chap.

@rufusboyd Thank you Rufus. I’m definitely not disappearing; just disappearing from the telly. I’ll still be ringing you in search of insight.

@rufusboyd It turned out to be true: these days BBC tv journalists are issued with an iPhone, a radio mic, a little light and a laptop. And with that we bring news to your screens

@richardsalkeld @RAIL I look forward to many more good stories with you yet, dear boy. But not on the telly.

@Mekong142 That’s very kind - I have plans! They don’t involve broadcasting but I’ll still be writing in RAIL and elsewhere
