And this starts with unpaid practicums. Social workers are devalued from the start.
This was an interesting report to skim through. Social Workers make on average $40-60k less than our nursing colleagues. Social Workers deserve so much better.

Paying students for field placements is not a substitute for debt cancellation, but many social work students would have to take out far fewer loans if they were compensated for field practicums.
We shouldn’t be required to live off of student loans to get our education!
Most of my student loan debt was accumulated to pay for the cost of field work in my MSW program and to survive while completing those unpaid hours of field. We all deserve better.

One way to begin diversifying the field is to pay social work students and others training to become therapists for their labor at practicum placements. Compensating students for their labor is a racial, disability, economic, and queer justice issue and so much more!!
And if you don’t believe me, go and speak to therapists from working class backgrounds, who are disabled, etc… and listen to the barriers they’ve had to face to train and qualify.

Unpaid practicums not only harm current students and drive out many from entering the field to begin with, but also have a lasting legacy of harm once students enter the workforce and ARE compensated for their labor.
Working for free during practicum instinctively makes you feel grateful for finely getting paid when you graduate.
Even when it’s not enough.
So many beginning therapists are just getting by and told they should be grateful for the work.
That’s not ok.

On Tuesday, April 4, CSSW announced the renaming of the Field Office to the Office of Practicum Learning in service of of the school's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).

I support paid practicums. I spent 40 hrs a week completing my MSW advanced practicum and worked 20 hours on weekends. Almost did not apply for an MSW solely based on financial reasons.

100% this! Unpaid social work practicums, like other unpaid labor, are a major barrier to low income social workers entering the field.
This also means less people with lived experience of being low income to support low income clients.
Don't wanna wade into 50k starting salary debate but a good a time to remind y'all that unpaid/very low paying internships/entry jobs is a way of gatekeeping ppl from lower income families, esp those who don't have parents money to support them and/or have to send money home

At the end of the day no amount of passion and character building can trump basic math. If your stipend doesn't even cover rent/barely covers rent then that's that. And if you have to send money home on top of that then it's just impossible.

When training to become a therapist involves unpaid practicums, it’s no wonder therapy has a class problem.
I’m talking about the system here, not individuals, and the fact that the system has become very elitist, only favours prospective therapists who can afford to train and gain accreditation, and it stifles diversity and change.
