It reminded me of a dear friend who commanded a B24 in the Pacific Theater… While running my first business, I was out visiting local companies when I met the charismatic owner of a successful legal firm. During our conversation, I spotted a photo of a B24 bomber with its crew, including him, posing in front of it. This led to a deep friendship with Col. Howard Mann (and his family), who had commanded his B24 in the Pacific theater during WWII. Colonel Mann had been shot down after a bombing mission over Truk Lagoon. He subsequently survived with most of his crew on the open ocean for 19 days before being rescued by an American submarine. Over the next 32 years, until his passing in 2017, he became one of my dearest friends. Our conversations often felt like leafing through a living history book. After I obtained my private pilot's license, I had the honor of flying Howard, an experienced pilot of both a B24 and later a B52 in Vietnam, in a Piper Archer to a business conference. Fancy that, flying Col. Mann in a single engine land aircraft. 😎 We're all fortunate to encounter people who've led extraordinary lives but carry their accolades humbly. Col. Howard Mann, you were truly a cherished friend. 🙏🏽
