Japan's rice shortage (panic buying) is over now that the new 2024 rice is available in the stores. However prices are currently around 600-700 yen per kilo of rice, while they used to be around 300-350 yen.
"Passing an exam" is "合格 gōkaku" in Japanese.
"Pentagonal" is "五角 gokaku", although in this case you should pronounce it gōkaku. So during the exam season Meitetsu had one "gōkaku" train to support students taking exams, with pentagonal handgrips!

Hankai 阪堺 Tram car no. 164, built in 1928, is among Japan's oldest working railway/tramway cars, and is still in service. You will not see it in the summer months though, because the car has no air-conditioning.
Many Japanese companies close down for the new year holidays until 4th January, and start again on the 5th. This year the 5th is a Friday, so after opening for one day, they close down again for three days for a long weekend. Why? Because they always start on the 5th...
Looking at the Tokaido shinkansen departure boards always makes me happy. It's great to live in an area with such a wonderful train service!

I saw this small bus on a lorry this morning. Is this the Hino Poncho Z EV electric bus? Very nice design, I would like to take a ride.

Tramways in Nagasaki
Meitetsu was delayed this morning due to an accident, and the main line was closed for more than 1 hour. Of course 'train delay certificates' were issued.
If Deutsche Bahn would issue such certificates, they would probably run out of money to buy paper for those within a week!
I wonder if anyone in the media will ask why the streets in Shibuya are not closed to private motor vehicles? A few weeks ago a car slammed into pedestrians, now a motorcycle, what is next?
Video: A motorcyclist attempting a wheelie slammed into the back of a taxi cab during tonight's Halloween festivities in Tokyo's Shibuya neighborhood. This will probably be all over the news tomorrow.
Hello, Hinotori! It's not a brand new train anymore, as it was introduced in 2020, but it's a great train and my favourite way to get from Nagoya to Osaka. The two hours' journey is just long enough for a nap. Only when in a hurry I use the shinkansen.
This is a typical "community bus" in Japan, with irregular departure times and long gaps between buses. It's not a useful mode of transit, but a few people rely on them.
This one in Inabe city (Mie prefecture) doesn't run on weekends and holidays, but it's free of charge!
Today the new tram/light rail line in Utsunomiya (also known as "Lightline Haga Utsunomiya LRT") opened for traffic. Below is the parade of the opening ceremony. Regular passenger traffic will start tomorrow.
Autumn is probably the best season in Japan, with fresh air and blue sky after the humid summer. Unfortunately the fresh air is often spoiled by people burning grass or other things, although forbidden in most areas.

I know that many areas in Japan suffer from depopulation, but can't the owners show some decency and tear down such houses instead of just letting them fall into disrepair?
Utsunomiya Light Rail (Stadtbahn Utsunomiya) will open in 2023 and is Japan's first LRT system built from scratch. All 17 trains (numbered HU301 to HU317) to run on the line have now been delivered, but so far are restricted to very short runs inside the depot.

If romanisation is to help non-Japanese to read and pronounce Japanese words, then only Hepburn must be used. With kunrei, we would have tunami and susi instead of tsunami and sushi, for example.

Japan's shortest station name: つ.
In a German supermarket, Japanese beer is much cheaper than Japanese tea!
During a recent visit to Osaka I noticed that the square in front of Namba station has been transformed into a real pedestrian square. Looks good, however very rare in Japan!

Why is there no safety zone between the car park and the buildings? Parking inside a historic temple should be banned anyway, but if there is urgent need for parking there must at least be some distance to the buildings.
Trams in Hiroshima:

on the right, built in 2020. Such contrasts are common in Hiroshima, Japan's largest tram network.

In central Nagoya, pavements are too narrow. So instead of making pavements wider and reducing on-street parking (there are lots of multi-storey car parks around), trees are cut down. Photos from Nagashimacho-dori (near Fushimi subway station), late June 2023. (1/2)

An Oktoberfest should be held in October and not during Golden Week! Otherwise just call it "German beer festival" please.
But apart from this rant, enjoy the festival!! 🍻

A great scene at Hiroshima, with all former Kyoto trams no. 1901 to 1915 lined up at the depot. These trams were built in 1957 for the Kyoto tram, and came to Hiroshima after the Kyoto system was closed in 1978.
1902 and 1903 were withdrawn from service last week.
Do you want to get your own Japanese railway container? These are about 10 to 15 cm in length, are sold at 100 yen stores, and can be opened on the top.

Rikkyo University in Tokyo (Ikebukuro campus) is one of the most beautiful universities in Japan, with its historic buildings. (Doshisha's Imadegawa campus in Kyoto is similar.)
Rikkyo was also the first university in Japan that I ever visited, in August 1988.

On this Scramble Crossing live camera we can see barriers around the Hachiko exit of the station - one of the busiest exits of the station- are cramming people into a narrow space.

Koi-Yamagata station on the Chizu Kyuko line in Tottori prefecture. Koi 恋 means love.
There is not much around the station, so the station is the attraction in itself.
The staff at Keikyu (Keihin Kyuko) must really be praised for their timetable design. It does not only show departure times, but also which trains (express, limited express, etc) are not stopping there!

"Tramway Day" was first held in 1995. June 10th (6/10) was chosen because "ro" for "roku" (=6) and "den" similar to English "ten" (=10) make up ROmen DENsha (=tramway). That explanation sounds far-fetched, but Twitter is full of #路面電車の日.
I am surprised to learn that the "Gasuto" restaurant has nothing to do with German "Gast" (=guest), but Spanish "gusto" (=taste). (1/2)
Decaying infrastructure in Japan, unfortunately a sad but true fact. This wooden bridge has been closed for years. However, this bridge is also a case of "too much infrastructure", as there are two other bridges only a few metres away, so tearing it down won't be a problem.
