I had to sing my daughter an extra bedtime song tonight because she was afraid of Baba Yaga. As a dad I wanted to comfort my girl but as a folklorist I was like, “Go, Baba! You still got it!”

I was chatting to a self-published occult author who just turned down their 1st book deal. Reason being? They have a huge social media fan base who, royalty wise, make it a better option to stay self-published. Plus, Patreon paid extras pay even more. Interesting times!

Instead of learning Confirmation prayers my daughter got to read (reread, let’s be honest here!) books by Irish authors @TinaACallaghan and @griffski . It’s been a tough year for her with loads of slagging. I think she prefers the books to pledging allegiance to a bishop 🙂

I’m only a hobbyist when it comes to it, but it’s disheartening to read occult ‘influencers’ say that fairies didn’t exist in Ireland before Christianity. No. You mean the definition of fairies you classify as subservient to a Middle-Eastern storm God weren’t always here🙄

In Irish lore, (pre-Christian) this is not the day to stand by the sea as the queen of fairies will drag you under the waves. Luckily for me, I have a daughter who will battle the fairy queen to save her dad... ... ...daughter runs away laughing as dad is pulled into the ocean.

There are lots of people claiming to represent Irish Paganism. Be careful and selective about them all, I’d advise. I’m doubtful about us ever being one original or authentic path. I’d actually say it’s always been chaotic and individual.

There are Irish pagans who are not occultists, & there are Irish occultists who are not pagans. I wish I could make this the default consideration point for (usually) American authors who write about Irish religion & spirituality, & who are, alas, popular. We’re not a flavour!

I think of most occult philosophies as pieces of art as I get older. It’s hard to believe that the instigators were wise. The more I discover and read, the more I see how privilege dictates accessible imagination. Animism is paganism for the working classes ✊
