Yesterday, we had an incredible session at Radio Kwizera in Ngara, Kagera - Tanzania, engaging communities on Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) and the importance of public health awareness. But beyond the discussion, what truly stood out was Radio Kwizera itself—a station deeply embedded in the lives of millions. Established in 1995 by the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS), Radio Kwizera has evolved into a trusted community-driven station, serving northwestern Tanzania, eastern Rwanda, Burundi, and parts of the DRC. Its coverage spans Ngara, Kibondo, Kasulu, Biharamulo, Bukoba, Geita, Kahama, and beyond, reaching some of the most underserved communities in the Great Lakes region. Unlike many radio stations, Radio Kwizera is more than just news—it is a lifeline for: ✅ Health education – Disseminating vital information on diseases like Marburg, Ebola, and malaria. ✅ Refugee and humanitarian support – Serving displaced populations with critical updates and services. ✅ Youth empowerment & education – Running programs that inspire and inform young people. ✅ Disaster response & emergency alerts – Mobilizing communities in times of crisis. As we shared knowledge on Marburg Virus Disease, it was clear that platforms like Radio Kwizera remain at the heart of public health communication. We are proud to collaborate with such a mission-driven media house to ensure that life-saving information reaches every corner of the region.

📢When COVID-19 hit, clinicians faced a challenge: Who would get worse? Who needed urgent care? 💉 Many tests existed, but they were relative expensive & inaccessible in resource-limited settings. We needed a simple, affordable marker—something hiding in plain sight. 🔬 Our study found that a high Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR ≥ 6.1) at admission was a red flag 🚨. •It predicted severe disease & higher mortality with 92% accuracy. •Nearly 40% of these patients deteriorated rapidly. 👨⚕️ What if we had used NLR sooner? This simple blood test could have helped doctors act earlier, saving lives in places where resources were stretched thin. As new pandemics loom, our findings urge one lesson: Sometimes, the answers are already in our capacity . We just have to look. 🔗 Read more:
