Elon Musk’s company, Neuralink has just received FDA approval to start testing brain chip implants in humans!
This is important because Neuralink is working on helping blind people see and solving many types of neurological disorders, like depression, dementia, seizures,
Yesterday, Neuralink officially changed its state of incorporation from Delaware to Nevada.
A Delaware judge recently delivered a (bogus and biased) ruling that sparked these messages from

He continues on:
"I want to thank Neuralink for doing this- for working hard everyday to make this a reality. I think that they are going to change the world."
Noland, a 29-year old quadriplegic suffered a freak diving accident 8 years ago and is completely paralyzed from the shoulders down. After being implanted with a Neuralink, Noland now has the freedom to use his computer with just his mind.

"Barrow Neurological Institute is world-class in its level of surgical expertise... It has been a true pleasure working with them as our first site, and we look forward to a continued productive
Neuralink was kind enough to open their doors for me to tour their headquarters a few weeks back. It was an amazing experience and a day I'll never forget. This was at a company wide meeting at the end of the day. Thank you to everyone who made this possible. Hope y'all enjoy!
@neuralink
Long-term, it is possible to shunt the signals from the brain motor cortex past the damaged part of the spine to enable people to walk again and use their arms normally
@cb_doge
@neuralink
I should mention that the Blindsight implant is already working in monkeys.
Resolution will be low at first, like early Nintendo graphics, but ultimately may exceed normal human vision.
(Also, no monkey has died or been seriously injured by a Neuralink device!)
Announcement:
@Neuralink
has released a way to play Webgrid, the game that their first participant, Noland
@ModdedQuad
has been playing with his implant.

This is perfect because my right hemisphere has been pretty jealous of my left hemisphere lately. Alternatively, if you just want to replace my entire skull with one giant
@neuralink
I'd be down with that too.
At Neuralink, we have imaging capabilities that let us see exactly what’s going on in fully sealed devices. For implant debugging, we often capture high-resolution 2D and 3D images with microCT. It’s what’s on the inside that counts ♥️

We are excited to share that we have received the FDA’s approval to launch our first-in-human clinical study!
This is the result of incredible work by the Neuralink team in close collaboration with the FDA and represents an important first step that will one day allow our
Neuralink's clinical trials are now open for recruitment.
"Those who have quadriplegia due to cervical spinal cord injury or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) may qualify."

This is not much consolation, but Neuralink is working on a vision chip, which will be ready in a few years.
That is the next area after enabling phone/computer telepathy for those who have lost their mind-body connection. We waiting for regulatory approval for our first human.
Bath time! 🛁 Our accelerated lifetime tester ages our implants at 4x speed. Developing new ways of expediting long-duration testing at scale allows us to iterate faster, identify low probability failures, and reduce animal use

If there are advanced Neuralinks in the future, there will be many flashback experiences to the past.
You will be able to experience not just your past, but any real or fictional reality.
Our surgical team enhances their skills by training on realistic, patient-specific head and brain models, ensuring surgeries are tailored to each individual for safety and success 🧠
Our surgeons use the lasso tool to highlight relevant brain regions based on fMRI. The robot leverages high resolution cameras to automatically place targets in the region of interests while avoiding the tiniest vessels that are not easily visible to the naked eye 🤠

We attach our custom ASICs to our implant PCBA using flip chip bonding process. Here’s a sped up version of that process where we pick up the chip, apply flux, precisely align, and bond to the board.🎯

, the first Neuralink patient, will share what it's like to have a brain implant that has already profoundly changed his life!
Elon Musk on unlocking mysteries of the brain via Neuralink:
"I think the work at Neuralink will definitely shed a lot of insight into how the brain, the mind works. Right now, just the data we have regarding how the brain works is very limited.
We’ve got fMRI, that’s like
These are the first waveforms produced by our next generation stimulation ASIC on benchtop. This custom chip unlocks the ability to support 16k+ channels with sufficient voltage and current and the fine control required to restore vision or reanimate the body, something we hope
This name is appropriate given that this first product will help quadriplegic patients gain the ability to control digital devices with just their mind
@psychosort
No monkey has died as a result of a Neuralink implant.
First our early implants, to minimize risk to healthy monkeys, we chose terminal moneys (close to death already),
In August, Neuralink raised $280MM in their Series D round of funding.
This amendment indicates the amount has been increased to $323MM.
I expect the funds to be used for hiring, expansion of the facilities in Austin, and the first in-human implantations.

@ModdedQuad
We use multiple scanning technologies to ensure that we target the optimal brain region with our implant. MRI and CT scans are aligned and used to guide the position of the implant on the skull surface intraoperatively. Functional MRI scans are used to identify the desired region
Neuralink is working on building high-bandwidth brain-machine interfaces.
These devices enable digital devices to communicate directly w/ the brain and accomplish two main things:
1. Prevent bad AI outcomes
2. Solve brain/ spine problems like strokes, blindness, paralysis, etc.
@JamesWLaw1
@Teslarati
@ResidentSponge
Definitely. Might be less than 5 years away, as current version Neuralinks are semi-generalized neural read/write devices with ~1000 electrodes and tinnitus probably needs <<1000.
Future gen Neuralinks will increase electrode count by many orders of magnitude.
Interesting post from James.
His original post about Tesla's FSD (Full-Self Driving) software sheds some light on how Neuralink's progress will play out.
@RyanTanaka3
This is also true for neuralink. The functionality will improve dramatically over time as the software improves. Hardware will get better too but most of the gains will be in software.
About 5 months later, Elon mentions the idea of a neural lace that would serve as a third, complimentary brain layer to our limbic system and cortex.
This concept could prevent digital intelligence from competing with our biological intelligence and instead merge them together.
Elon is among numerous others who are concerned about the dangers of AI. Stephen Hawking for example, believe “AI could spell the end of the human race.”
In January 2016, this might be the first time Elon publicly mentions brain-interfaces.
The surface of the brain is highly vascularized, and avoiding blood vessels when implanting electrodes is no small feat! Fluorescent dye imaging can allow our robot to resolve smaller vessels and distinguish between arteries (red) and veins (blue) in this false color image 🔴🔵
One of the coolest things I worked on was the surgical imaging / targeting workflow to get this implant in the right spot ^-^
It's really awesome to see how my work has changed Noland's life.
We’re happy to announce our $280M Series D round led by

First Neuralink will be implanted in a human at the end of this year, or early next year. This is what Elon said on the Full Send Podcast released on August 4, 2022:
.
@elonmusk
said this first product is called 'Telepathy.'
This is a fitting name given that the surgically implanted brain-chip device is going to help paralyzed patients use a computer, or any digital device, just by thinking. Consider how meaningful this technology will be!
