Ever so proud of our farm worker. Cow milker, calf raiser, field hand. Drove beat up truck an hour to
@SUNYCobleskill
daily. Now….she and her dog heading out out to
@cornellvet
to become a large animal veterinarian. Go girl! Accepted at 5 vet schools!
Meet Walter, an elder dog from a big city shelter. No one wanted him. He is now a farm dog. We brought him home to the farm, He loves watching farm traffic and people coming and going.
Locals keep calling the state police on the young farmer who is chopping silage and mowing hay till midnight. The kid lost his father last year. Personally, I hope these people starve if we see supply chain breakdowns.
It is with a heavy heart that I announce that my next door neighbor's beautiful herd of cows was liquidated at auction yesterday. The low price of milk killed the farm. They sold for $450 to $850. Most went to slaughter. We are now the last farm standing on this road.
3 calves saved themselves from Missouri River flood. The farmer bringing them food by boat for now till they can be rescued. Pic by Tawny Tetrault from Facebook
This is the rescue dog who pulled one of our vet clinic clients who had adopted him out of a burning house. A hefty dog, he pulled and supported her as they made way down hall and stairs to a safe distance. What a dog hero.
Driving behind big snowplow to get to neighboring farm. Delivering big chuck roast, carrots and some nice Ontario parsnips and a sheet cake with cream cheese frosting.
Our barn in winter. Main barn built in a community barn raising the year after the Civil War ended. Biggest barn in area at the time, a time of community optimism. The wing on barn was a barn on Tug Hill that g’parents dismantled, brought by horse drawn wagon to this farm.
My late grandpa. By age 4, tended geese for a nobleman. By 14, in the coal mines of Poland. At 19, to NYC and then on to upstate NY where he delivered coal in Utica till he could buy a farm. Farmed actively until 90 years old.
We are at -10F at the farm. North of us Saranac lake at -20. Calf nursery infrared heat lamps all on. Calf jackets on all babies. This should pass over in a day or so.
Blizzard conditions. Our pre-vet student made it to help get the cows milked. I hope she gets into vet school. Not from a farm, but hung around with us old farm women for a couple of years now. She has become a cattlewoman. Respect.
Talking with an older farm woman who planted 200 sugar maple trees. I said, "yeah, but 40 years until you get maple syrup." She replied, "no, they are for my great grandchildren." 🥰
Welcome to my part of rural NY, like stepping into another century. Black woolen coat, felt hat, leather blanket and a handmade buggy. If I close my eyes, I could believe it's another era when I hear the sound of horseshoes on the road.
Good news. My little niece who grew up trying to save every sick creature has been accepted into the Harvard PhD program in Virology. We used to tease her for being laser focused on viruses. Now... we are in awe and proud.

Good news! One of our farm workers has been accepted at U of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. We as old farmer women taught her all we know. Proud of our protégé.
Truck fully loaded with 70,000 pounds of milk gathered from a dozen farms in the neighborhood. Today to be sent to Italian cheesemaking Plant. Our truck driver poses with her truck.

More good news. Our farm worker has been accepted at Tufts Vet School in addition to Tennessee Veterinary School. Damn great for a kid who drove a rusted out pickup truck an hour to Cobleskill Ag School daily, while holding down a job on our farm.
Please just leave the rocks in rivers alone to help the hellbenders survive. Getting tired of this new age nonsense of rock stacking that harms river creatures.
It would be great if our best NY dairy product, simple whole milk ( this is 3.25% fat milk) was legal to serve in NY schools. A glass of nutritious milk is not to blame for fat kids.
Two horse teams have been hauling blocks of ice from nearby pond all day. Ice will be stored in ice house to cool food. No need for Freon or electricity.
There is a group of cowboys rushing around Paradise saving animals. I watched as they went to a home leveled in
#CampFire
not knowing what to expect. Huddled together were eight horses, two with burns. They loaded them, drove outside fire barricades to the grateful owner
Steady stream of people with no farm experience knocking on back door asking for work. Had to turn all away except a young determined Olive Garden waitress. Her hours cut, she needs several hours to fill in. Maybe she can learn to feed calves.
Our fifth rescue dog. He’s loving farm life. Spends his days riding on the jump seat in the tractors, guarding the cows and herding the geese. Now, he has a purpose in life and is devoted to my brother. Need to make him a jump seat safety harness.
Now in her third year. We are grateful for her mentors along the way, the willingness of Harvard to take on a farm kid. Most of all for her drive in infectious diseases and virology and healing the sick.

The toothless senior dog we got from the shelter is enjoying Farm life. No teeth and a crooked face, but we love him. He sleeps on pile of old blankets they he adjusts every night.
Farmers are opposing a new 780,000 acre federal wildlife preserve in Pennsylvania that would encompass many of their farms. Worried their lands will be seized and farm communities broken.
Good news! One of our college kid farm workers has an interview with
@tuftsvet
Praying she gets in. We will drive to Boston in a victory convoy of our rusty farm trucks. A working class girl dreaming of being a farm vet.
Good news. Our farm worker has been accepted at
@cornellvet
! Very exciting. From
@SUNYCobleskill
to Cornell Vet. Drove a beat up pickup truck an hour each way to undergrad, milked cows to pay bills. Now… on to Ivy League vet school. Dreams can come true.
Here’s a little video of Tilt, a older dog we just got. He is kind of scared but I think he will like farm life. The shelter named him Tilt because of uneven jowls, one side of face hangs down a bit from an old porcupine quills episode. Nobody wanted him so he can stay with us.
Went to check a new calf. She had a touch of diarrhea yesterday. In an individual nursery with her own heat lamp and new jacket . Thankfully, poop looks good! A solid little calf plop. All’s well.
Good news. An older man, alone, no heat during this bitter cold was too ashamed to ask for help. People pitched in to get him set up with tank of heating oil. Tonight, he is warm .

We are running low on hay. Buying from an elderly 80 something farm woman. Her nephew helps her make hay. They sell to rest of us to eke out enough to pay land taxes. Kind of a circular economy where we are all connected in the community.
Hill country NY. The cows are busy grazing in the big valley. Milk from our farm is made into
@chobani
yogurt these days. I saw some bobolinks in the upper meadow.
Well, our neighbor announced she is closing the farm stand. Too much stealing of maple syrup, honey and even pulling the cash box from the wall. It was nice while it lasted.
Good morning, all! Shopping for breakfast plus free books at neighbor’s farmstand. Fresh eggs, cucumber slices and a hunk of
@cabotcheese
cheddar to start the weekend. Enjoy, friends!
