We're pleased to report that the Barrington Lake and Tantallon wildfires are officially out. A special thanks to all our firefighters who brought the fires under control and then spent weeks monitoring for hotspots and putting them out.

Effective 29 May 2023, a province-wide ban on open fires is in effect because of dry conditions. Open fires are not permitted anywhere in the province. The ban applies to fires in provincial parks and private campgrounds. It also applies to backyard campfires and brush burning.

First responders were hard at work Wednesday evening in Sandy Point near Shelburne. Waterbombers flew overhead, ambulances helped with evacuations, and an excavator widened a driveway to allow for heavy equipment to gain access to frontlines.

Burning is never allowed between 8 am and 2 pm. That's why before 2 pm, the map is red to indicate no burning. Every day, the map is updated at 2 pm with the latest restrictions. Check before you burn at and know your municipal bylaws.

Starting today, June 10, our helicopters will be flying over wildfires in the province and using infrared scanners to detect hot spots. This will help ground crews fully extinguish fires. Scanning will be done between 5 and 9 a.m. when weather allows and could take up to a week.

As of 8pm May 28, setting fires for any reason is prohibited in woods/within 1000 ft of woods in Queens, Lunenburg, Shelburne, Yarmouth, Digby, Annapolis & Kings counties, including private campground & backyard fires. Also banned in provincial parks in these counties since 2pm.

CSA approved propane fireplaces, barbeques, and charcoal barbeques are allowed to be used as long if you are using the recommended fuel. #NSFire Do not add anything on top (wood, garbage, etc.) because it can cause sparks.

We don’t know how this little one found its way into a parking garage in downtown Halifax, but our staff were able to safely sedate the deer and bring it back to its natural habitat. We love these happy endings!

Many thanks to our staff & partners for saving an osprey family whose nest was damaged by fire. @hopeforwildlife cared for 2 nestlings rescued by @nspowerinc . @NS_DNRR staff built a new nest, NSP installed it on new pole with landowner permission. The family was reunited Friday.

Wildfire near Horseshoe Lake, Yarmouth Co. is now 60% contained. Fire did not spread today and is still estimated to cover just over 3,100 hectares. At this time, we do not see it reaching communities. Crews and equipment will remain on scene until dark and return tomorrow.

Due to impacts of the flooding on July 22, 2023, Smileys Provincial Park, Hants County is closed for the remainder of the parks season. Cleanup work is underway and the park is closed to all visitors. Full refunds will be given for campsite reservations affected by the closure.
