Grateful to officially be Kathleen Mulligan, MD! Will never be able to fully express how deeply grateful I am to every mentor, friend and family member that supported me to get here 💖
Thrilled to finally share our project that it made its way into
@JAADjournals
! We studied metastasis patterns of mucosal melanoma based on primary sites and found significant differences which led to differences in survival:
Proud to finally share a passion project that has been in progress for over a year and was just published! We found 38 million+ Americans live over an hour's driving time from the nearest clinical trial for immunotherapy for melanoma, a treatment that has transformed survival.
Happy to share our paper in
@JAADjournals
summarizing Cochrane Library’s systematic review of skin integrity interventions in older people, a neglected topic that may warrant more dermatologist involvement. Shoutout to this team (including co-1st auth/mentor/friend
@K8toconnell
!)
Excited to share this collaboration in
@TheJNS
with an all star team!
Women have long been underrepresented in neurosurgery, and we found it will take approx. 155/245 years to achieve gender distribution equal to the U.S. physician workforce and overall population respectively.
Just out in

International! We studied trends in scientific literature that have so far guided the discussion of COVID-19 and dermatology. Have you noticed any trends in these most cited articles?

Had an absolute blast at
#AAD2022
- got to connect with dozens of wonderful other medical students, residents and doctors from all over! Still feel like I missed so much but already looking forward to next year!!
I got to do this interview to explain why Doc Opera is SO near and dear to my heart - not only does it raise money for our student run health clinic, but it’s such a rare opportunity for med students to creatively express our experiences in life and medicine ❤️❤️
To honor her father, who has since passed away,
@CWRU
School of Medicine student Kathleen Mulligan wrote a song as a tribute to him during his last few days. It will be a special moment when that song is performed this Sat, Dec. 11, at Doc Opera 2021.
A little last minute review under a beautiful sunset before my first rotation tomorrow! Feels scary starting something so new (especially given this tumultuous past week), but grateful to my many friends and mentors who have given wonderful advice and guidance up to now 💕
Excited for our latest paper to drop! EVALI (e-cig or vaping assoc lung injury) was considered a public health crisis mere months before COVID-19 rose to prominence, and it's especially important to keep this ddx in mind esp. for adolescent patients.
@davidxzheng
@BGalloMarin
So excited to share our latest drop in JAAD International (and love having the opportunity to work with friends across institutions)! We evaluated the current state of online information for a medically complex population with under-discussed cutaneous side effects.

Happy to have contributed to this important topic, and also interested in hearing others’ thoughts! As some specialties rapidly ramp up in competitiveness, we present some ideas on how to maximize equity for applicants with different opportunities available.
#dermtwitter
In light of
#Match2023
ramping up, we present considerations regarding how increased emphasis on the perceived value of research years may in turn foster inequities in the dermatology residency match. What are your thoughts on research years?

Had the chance to speak with
@medpagetoday
about our recently published study comparing mucosal melanoma survival outcomes in

So so grateful to have had the chance to take a week off of M3 rotations and see my old team dominate at the Ivy League Championships this weekend. No better feeling in the world than coming together with a team like this 🧡🏊♀️🐅
Excited about our new editorial out in
@JAADjournals
!
@MulliganMed
and I discuss the potential for meaningful dermatologic engagement on TikTok and outline considerations regarding using its proprietary algorithm to maximize public health outreach.
Hard not to be a little awestruck at watching today’s eclipse with a nice view of the

Was so excited for one of our first in-person lectures in a while, until I got individually Socratic method-ed in front of all my classmates on a really weak topic 😭 if you need me I’ll be studying EKGs for the next straight 12 hours
@davidxzheng
David, I’m so fortunate that you’ve been not only such an important mentor to me but a loyal friend since before day 1 of med school. You’ve changed my academic trajectory and countless others, and I know you have so many people in your corner supporting and rooting for you👏👏
Had the absolute BEST time today teaching an assembly of 3rd graders the
@AADskin
Good Skin Knowledge curriculum back at my very own grade school in Phoenix! They absolutely crushed it with the skin models 🤩🤩
On a plane back to Cleveland this morning but bought the wifi to see and celebrate all of my

friends today!! Incredibly excited for so many wonderful people 🥳🥳🥳
Very excited about this paper 🤩 Had some surprising findings which led us to an interesting discussion on the role of physicians in political advocacy. Thankful to work with this great team!
With all of the changes to the residency application cycle last year, we figured applicants might match a little differently. Spoiler alert: in dermatology, they did! Check out our latest article in
@ced_wiley
, and shoutout to our excellent research team!
Ran a

5k this morning and got my lucky number (my birthday!!) 🥳🥳 Still definitely a better swimmer than runner, but keeping options open for a triathlon someday…
Dr. Farmer has been one of my academic role models since I took Medical Anthropology in 2014 - such a giant in his field who was the definition of bringing his work out into the world. So sad to hear 😔😔😔
Partners In Health announced that its founder, Dr. Paul Farmer, unexpectedly passed away today in his sleep while in Rwanda.
Dr. Farmer was 62 years old. He is survived by his wife, Didi Bertrand Farmer, and their three children.

Was still reeling from the excitement of getting a paper accepted yesterday when I got hit with 3 rejections in 2 hours today 🥲🥲 we love to learn the lessons of academic publishing!!

So excited to be part of this paper, in which we critically discuss how much the technical advances of cancer screening and treatment are *really* targeting/helping the populations at highest risk. Check it out!!
Our latest in
@JPRASurg
, in which we explore how technological advances made during the pandemic, while likely beneficial for the management of cutaneous malignancies, may also exacerbate the "digital divide" among skin cancer patients of advanced age.
Still reeling from this, but wanted to make sure to send the biggest shoutout to
@UHcleENT
for their absolutely phenomenal mentorship, encouragement, and support over the last few years. Thank you for welcoming me into this field with open arms!!
Excited to speak to Good Morning Cleveland and
@MegDShaw
with
@AllieJ_Med
to show a little bit of our Doc Opera preparation this year and help promote our vital Student Run Health Clinic! 👯♀️🎼🩺👩⚕️
This paper is truly one of my proudest projects to date in combining several topics that are extremely meaningful to me, including detection and adequate treatment of unusual cancer types that otherwise may not be discovered until the prognosis is devastating.

This was a main finding of our recently published bibliometric analysis of COVID-19/derm literature! Currently many descriptive studies and reviews but very few high impact interventional or cohort studies, definitely a gap that should be addressed.
Last day to buy early bird tickets!!! Truly SUCH a great cause - all of the directors, choreographers, dancers, singers, band and supporting crew have spent countless hours over the last few months putting this show together. You won't want to miss it! 🤩👯♀️💃
Tickets are now on sale for

@davidxzheng
@DermatologyJC
Definitely agree - in my gap years I worked in 2 derm clinics in different states, and neither had clear verbiage on how to explain these MMIS/AMP diagnoses to patients. We usually erred on the side of overstating the risks and patients were often unnecessarily scared
#DermJC
Want to thank the really truly excellent data specialists at
@kelvinsmithlib
at CWRU for helping me learn some ArcGIS skills for this project, as well as our entire author team! Full paper here:
While head and neck mucosal melanomas have their own unique AJCC staging criteria, neither urogenital nor anorectal mucosal melanoma do - and the latter tends to lead to worse mortality. Individualized staging criteria may help patients receive more specific/optimized treatment.
We also appreciate this thoughtful reply from Dr. McAlpine and Dr. Drummond contextualizing our findings across countries and supporting our claim that for long-term change to occur, investing in new strategies is critical. Response here:
For the last year I’ve been getting tons of social media ads for post bacc programs/other affiliated health programs, and today I got my first Med Student targeted ad 🥰🥰🥰
@XDXGX
before med school I was an MA/scribe at derm clinics in Boston and Phoenix and I tell people this all the time!!! Such different experiences re: patient populations and the types of cases we’d see every day - definitely highlighted some disparities
When a voice disorder meant that associate news editor Currie Engel was unable to sing or talk properly, she realized just how much her own “music” was connected to who she was.
@ducrest
@davidxzheng
@JAADjournals
Hi Dr. du Crest - we discuss that dermatologists on the app may consider using viral trends like background music or hashtags to facilitate the promotion of accurate content given the FYP algorithm. The AAD can even consider making its own account!
