Patient: are you sure you are not American ? There is no accent
Me: yes m’am I am sure
Attending: Ben is proudly from Nicaragua because we welcome people from across the world at Brown Medicine
Me: 🥺🇳🇮
I am from Nicaragua. I earned a place at Princeton where I studied molecular biology, and now I am in medical school at Brown. I hope I get to be in your care team one day to prove you wrong.
Mentorship is the reason I was able to make it to med school as an international student in the US and now match in residency. My DMs are open to folks preparing for the dermatology match and international med students/premeds (and anyone else!) ✅
What a surprise to receive the Dean’s Prize as the top-ranked graduating med student
@BrownMedicine
- and incredibly moved that the award was presented by my dermatology mentor, Dr. Leslie Robinson-Bostom. Proud to represent Nicaragua + the international med student community 🇳🇮

Very thankful to have been inducted tonight to

and the GHHS, and to share this moment with my classmates
@BrownMedicine
and family from home 🇳🇮
it is time
tomorrow, I start medical school in the US - an incredibly challenging journey that many told me to forget about due to my status as an international student
But here we are, and I am ready to fuel a med revolution for Nicaragua and Latin America

So today I worked with a Hispanic dermatologist for the first time and wow - taking care of patients with a fully Spanish-speaking team is the future 🥳
In our new
@JAADjournals
paper, we offer suggestions to increase the # of Spanish-speaking dermatologists which is key to improve care for Spanish-speaking patients. ¡Las nuevas generaciones de dermatólogos hablan español!

This is a tough goodbye. Brown and Providence were so good to me, and this place made me feel for the first time at home in the US - largely because of my many friends and mentors.
In summary, gracias totales. Continuamos el camino en New York (en un par de días). Adelante
Done with residency interviews! It was very poetic that my last interviewer was also once an international student at a US med school like myself. What a ride! Thank you programs for letting me share my excitement about dermatology and my love for Latin America 🇳🇮 ¡adelante!
Starting off vacation with the amazing news that the H1B application was approved. See you soon
@StanfordMed
Derm! Thank you for investing so much in me already 🇳🇮
My scholarly concentration project

Yo so can you give people who have graduated a new diploma? I didn’t do this major but I am pretty sure people don’t want a racist’s name in their hard earned degree. Also, cover the costa you are rich
Final batch of dermatology interviews happening this week! It has been an honor to share my story with programs and meet wonderful people throughout the process 🤙🏽

¡se habla español! ☀️🧴

First set of evaluations as a PGY-1 at

Forever grateful to the SCORE program
@StanfordMed
, which made it possible for me to find a dermatology home that responded with heartwarming enthusiasm to my goals of bringing Latin America closer to the scholarly conversation in the specialty. A spectacular opportunity !

Driver: Are you an emergency doc?
Me: No..med student
Driver: Spanish?
Me (in Spanish): yes. nicaraguan
Driver: I need a favor
Me: how can I help?
Driver: my aunt's name is X, she is sick in the ED, we can't see her bc of Covid. Tell her that we love her
Finding mentorship for a dermatology match as an international med student has been tough. My favorite

moment was meeting docs who listened to my story. One of them said that they are ready to be seen by a Nicaraguan dermatologist! 🇳🇮 Can't wait to join this specialty
Y’all: “Gallo Marin et al., 2020”

this doesn’t happen often to people where I come from - what a privilege to be able to contribute to medicine and science !

Put simply, the DICTATORSHIP in

is KILLING UNARMED civilians - students, children, families. The patterns of repression mimic the terror strategies of ISIS. I invite the people who read this Tweet to help raise the people of Nicaragua. We are human, too.

Lovely gift from
@BrownMedicine
to this year’s TAs for the Clinical Skills Clerkship. What a great opportunity to share pointers and experiences with rising M3s as they prepare for the start of their rotations next week 🩺🩻
I asked my resident mentor to see if we could find this patient. They were still in the ED and I had the privilege to deliver the message, in Spanish. Cool moment.
This comes from the same specialty with a faculty member at an away rotation who referred to me as "the foreigner", a review in JAAD implying that recruiting Spanish speakers to derm has little value, etc. So much work remains to be done to improve dermatologic care for everyone
Black docs account for 3.6% of all dermatologists, and Latinx/Hispanic docs just 4.6%.
Yet this member-led resolution has been submitted to
@aadskin
(American Acadmey of Dermatology) seeking to dismantle *all* of the academy’s DEI initiatives:
Getting an emotional support animal to power through medical school in a foreign country after going through lockdown by myself has been the best idea I've ever had.
Also my dog can read EKGs and save your life
Last day of M3. Thankful for my patients, who have been my best teachers, and for the kind attending and residents physicians that have been part of my medical education. Already looking forward to the next phase!

I just received word of several physicians in

that have taken care of me who have suspected COVID-19. Yet, the government has refused to test them. Why?
Meanwhile, the government continues to promote mass gatherings. Is this a politically calculated strategy? Yes.
@davidxzheng
I’m honored to call you a friend and mentor as well - your love for dermatology is unmistakable and the future of the specialty will be brighter with you. You introduced me to scholarship in derm and I won’t be forgetting that! We are here for you.
As my tattoo says:
ERAS should have a way to indicate that international M4s graduating from US med schools -do not- need a visa for their first year of residency training (i.e. no visa needed for a prelim year, for example), as we are eligible to receive OPT via our student visa.

Very ready to not night float again :)

Prometric cancelled my friend's Step exam *today*, when everyone was already at the testing site. They are understaffed, they said. So what's up with the hundreds of dollars that this test costs and the fees to change the exam? Ridiculous
