ICYMI. I piece together what's going on in But He's a Lord, Mr Callan, the final missing episode from Callan's first series.
Gambling, blackmail, cheats and betrayal. Just an ordinary week with the Section...
Patrick Macnee: greatest role model for men. Brought up by lesbians who treated him as a girl, became the archetype of the English gentleman. Enthusiastically hetero but always respectful of &deferential to women. Was upbraiding co-star Ian Hendry for homophobia back in the 60s
Cocktails, chocolate and Genesis of the Daleks for me this evening!
The first episode is stunning. The location filming is wonderfully atmospheric - the bombardment, the mist, that slight background whistling - and it feels so horribly brutal so quickly. Yes, I like my grimness.
@fesshole
Just… tell her you’re working so obviously don’t have time for housework? But, you know, sticking a wash on also isn’t that much effort - certainly less than this absurd subterfuge.
I had to wade into a pub conversation during the football. After the Dutch’s Virgil appeared, the blokes behind us started arguing that Virgil was the one who drove Lady Penelope and I couldn’t let this lie.
A while ago I stumbled on this care home training video presented by
@sophie_aldred
, starring Jacqueline Pearce and Nicholas Courtney.
Happily, Sophie confirmed today that the producer was indeed a Doctor Who fan.

Eavesdropping on a table of very middle class sounding ladies, who are struggling with being retired/semiretired in their 50s with disposable income but have no idea what to do all day.
How awful.
Finished my rewatch of Series 1 of 1990 tonight and decided it’s still brilliant. I’m looking forward to cracking on with Series 2. I’ve realised what great pleasure I get from 1970s’ dystopias. Might have to start piling them up.
Sad to hear of Stephen Greif’s passing. He had a wonderful presence and his voice was a delight to listen to (I recommend
@bigfinish
’s Outlaw). He was a charming gentleman who readily heaped due praise on colleagues. I love this beautiful photo of him during a theatre rehearsal.
@fesshole
I did this as a kid. My parents were baffled but I enjoyed the slight difference and saw no reason why I should sleep the same way every night.
This week I discovered that Grange Hill’s Fay Lucas (aka Alison Bettles) is the mother of The Empty Child’s gas mask kid (Albert Valentine).
Hoping Grange Hill is canon.
Need some reassurance: how many bookcases do you have?
My mother seems to think that 4 is ‘hoarding’ and I’m currently feeling fairly sure I got more of my dad’s genes.
“Crime statistics for Dock Green are awfully good. Anyone know why?”
PC Dixon admits he is allowing the husbands of Dock Green to abuse their wives. I mean, bloody hell.
A reminder: a man assaulted another man in front of Dixon the other week and he did NOTHING.
This must be the first broadcast of this episode since it original went out. I’ll never stop harping on about how Goodnight Sweetheart should have been given a new series from this. They could still do it!
Gary Sparrow has been trapped in the past for 17 years, but his decision to witness his own birth sees him catapulted into 2016.
Saturday at 8.25pm on That's TV
Part Two of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy tonight.
Delighted to spend time with Ricki Tarr. He’s a rogue and a charmer, he wears lovely, very 70s suits in Lisbon, and I find Hywel Bennett’s performance so bloody likeable.
Bloody hell mate.
@TalkingPicsTV
is only giving you lot Callan - the whole bleeding lot! Come and join us in the Section, boys and girls. Monday 4th March, 9pm.
I’m watching Clive James: Postcard from Sydney. I’ve never seen anything of his before. It’s the most lovely thing. I tuned in accidentally but have been drawn in and fascinated for about 20 minutes.
Proper love the new TARDIS. I like its cleanness, its oneness, its relative simplicity. It feels fresh and sleek. It’s enormous! I can’t believe they made it that bloody big! I love the colour palette that harks back to 20th century Who. It’s gorgeous.
#DoctorWho
I’ve watched little but Doctor Who and Blake’s 7 for the last couple of weeks, but need a change tonight.
I’ve been aching to revisit Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy for a while, and the lovely bluray makes it even more attractive.
I’ve mixed experiences with different versions of The Underwater Menace but I’ve great praise for the new animation. People said camp, I thought “Really?” but it’s gloriously so! I adore the colour palette, it’s really funny at times and I’m impressed with Mark Ayres sound work.
I’ve still not got beyond the first 2 episodes of Survivors - I’ve now watched the second one 3 times and remain brilliantly horrified by some elements.
Love the biblical episode titles so far, with The Fourth Horseman followed by Genesis.
Feel some of us could do with a nice timeline cleanser so I thought I’d share that I’ve officially become an auntie today 😁
Will be spending the next few years attempting to become the ultimate cool, fun aunt 😎
I have bought a 1973 guide to UK hotels and restaurants. It is glorious. It includes reviews of motorway services and advice on how to choose an after-dinner cigar. Looking forward to their section on hospital food.
Completed my Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy rewatch.
On first viewing I stayed up until 4.30am, an unplanned binge of the lot!
It’s still so wonderful: gripping, full of interesting characters I love, a world you want to spend more time exploring, and lovely snapshots of the 1970s.
Is Soho dead? To find out, I decided to replicate Tom Baker’s famous Sunday Times Life In A Day, in which he engages in a 15 (ish) hour pub and restaurant crawl through golden era Soho. Could it still be done? More pertinently, could I hack it? 👇
It’s now £18 for a standard adult ticket at my local cinema (Odeon). We begrudgingly paid £14 last year, but I can’t imagine there being any film I’d want to see at the cinema enough to pay £18. That’s a shame.
8 years ago I began admiring the pub-going gear of Robin in Man About the House. More recently, it’s been the garb of The Tomorrow People’s Elizabeth.
I fully accept those are not the names that will be called out when I walk into my local come Autumn.
There are some lovely people out there. I’m delighted to be giving this Target collection a new home, thanks to some marvellous generosity.
I’ve only read one Target before and prior to this arriving owned about 8, so this gives me quite a lot more choice for my second!
Looking forward to Horror of Fang Rock at the BFI. I’ll also be there early doors for the Graham Williams documentary.
Hope to see all the usual reprobates in the bar afterwards.
Hi, I'm Hannah. I'm 27, I began watching Doctor Who in 2005 and have never had enough shelf space since. It taught me what CSO is and that black and white telly can be very good. It has led me to lots of other interesting telly and nice people.

Tonight I’m watching Sapphire and Steel. I was so baffled by both plot and main characters when I first watched Assignment One, but this time I’m enjoying just watching them both a bit more.
THIRTY ONE.
I’ve opened cards and presents, watched Doctor Who with a big breakfast sandwich and am now Birmingham-bound for a pub crawl with a few of my favourite people. Perfect.
Tonight I’m watching the first episode of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
I saw the film 16 years ago and read the book shortly afterwards, but this is my first time with the TV series.
I’ve arrived in California for a couple of weeks holiday! Immigration had never heard of Doctor Who and having my luggage opened up was worth it just for the bemused look on the inspector’s face as he examined a Blake’s 7 novel.
Tonight I’m watching The Box of Delights for the first time.
I know little about it - there are some children, Patrick Troughton and maybe some wolves. Everyone says how lovely it is so I’ve been looking forward to starting an episode each week in the run up to Christmas.
An independent DVD shop has sprung up in town and I am increasingly convinced it’s a front for some criminal enterprise. It sells a mixture of new and secondhand items - none of them recent releases - at prices that the nearby CEX and charity shops must laugh at.
Peter Purves has made allusions that an animated version of The Celestial Toymaker could, maybe, possibly, be a thing he would enjoy seeing if it, maybe, possibly, ever happened…
#Utopia2023
Today I’ve watched Dimensions in Time for the first time - on a projector screen, with Colin Baker and Bonnie Langford commentating, surrounded by a panto crowd joining in! Could not be bettered!
#Utopia2023
We have been incredibly lucky to have
@networktweets
release such a wonderful range of archive television. It’s been a cultural service. They’ve helped my interest grow into a passion, and I’m delighted to have connected with several lovely people over our shared loves.
New blog. Has there ever been a better time for me to start watching a drama about a devastating global plague?
Get your Terry Nation bingo cards ready as I embark on Survivors!
Look I try to be full of praise for the Doctor Who Collection box sets and hold back grumpy opinions because I know they’re made with love, but…
The Behind the Sofa intro is now 57 seconds long and that’s utterly unnecessary. I need to get to Katy Manning faster than this.
Today I’ve been following in the footsteps of Sarah and the Fourth Doctor. First a visit to the Space Research Centre*, followed by the village of Devesham**.
No androids identified so far. Invasion could be imminent though.
*UK Health Security Agency
**East Hagbourne
I’ve had a lovely day at
@Covconuk
- including watching an ‘Allo ‘Allo Q&A with
@Huskyteer
who has never seen the show. I loved how much effort they cast had made!
I like this signage in Life On Mars. I also like that somebody’s job one day was to find out what sort of fonts would have been used in the design of a police station circa 1973.
New blog. Part guide, part travelogue - here's everything you need to know about visiting some of Blake's 7's filming locations in Yorkshire.
I really enjoyed my trip and already fancy a second visit!
