>75% of India's working pop continues to be engaged in typically low productivity work (oaw+casual+unpaid). In the period of demgrphc dividend, the econ is utilising its lab capital in a suboptimal fashion with a majority in low quality work.

Our paper (w/
@amitbasole
) on the comparability of CPHS and PLFS labour income numbers is now out!
We find through diff methods, assmptions, rural/urban locations & demographic groups, that CPHS mean monthly labour earnings are ~5-50% higher than the corresponding PLFS estimates.
Real wages grew at *< 1%* pa bw 2014-15 & '21-22 for agri, non-agri lab & constrctn workers!
"In India, poor people are rarely unemployed, bc they cannot afford to do nothing. If real wages are rising workers are likely to be earning more & living better"
Using ~30 years of Indian labour survey data we move beyond the metrics of UR & LFPR to assess the health of the labour market viz. the number of jobs + quality of jobs getting created. (1/5)

Own-account workers constitute the largest chunk of the employed, while the sharpest increase in employment over the period comes from those employed as unpaid family labour. Neither of these two subcategories of self-employment form aspirational jobs! (3/5)
In contrast, even though the period 2004-05 to 2017-19 saw a smaller overall increase in employment, the increase was driven by salaried jobs, indicative of good quality jobs. (5/5)

Further, real earnings of the self-employed at best stagnated, & for some actually fell over this period. Together, these demonstrate worrying signs about the nature of jobs that are absorbing vast majority of Indian masses. (4/5)
Comparing long-term trends, 2017-18 to 2021-22 comes out as the "best" phase with the highest increase in overall employment. Aggregates naturally hide more than they reveal. Rising number of employed comes along with a worsening overall quality of employment. (2/5)
