Why spending and not income? How is this data collected? Does it capture the rich? Does it capture the poor? These and other such questions answered in our accompanying Measurement piece here:

Looking forward to the Delhi elections getting over, so that I can start answering phone calls from phone numbers that begin with a 7 again.

The extent of progress in India in the last 30 years is sometimes hard to fathom. Here are two maps, 30 years apart, that do a great job of showing just how far we've come (this one's on electricity access)

Data For India

Access to electricity in Indian households has expanded dramatically over the last three decades. In 1993, just half of all Indian households had access to electricity, but by 2021, this figure shot up to over 96%. In 1993, Delhi was the only state/Union Territory with more than 95% of households connected. By 2021, 31 of the 36 states and Union Territories had electrified over 95% of their households. However, having an electricity connection doesn't guarantee reliable service. Households can still face challenges with frequent power cuts, voltage fluctuations, and inconsistent supply, which affect their ability to use electricity dependably for daily and essential needs. Read @nileena_suresh's piece to understand how the primary source of energy for household lighting has transformed over time: #Electricity #Power #Lighting #India #DataForIndia
