Any year 6 teachers doing circulatory system need to use their AR app

. It perfectly demonstrates how tech can be used in a non gimmicky way to improve learning. If you have an Apple Watch, the heart will show your current heart rate.

Holy moly! I have just realised that the last year has shown some SLT that children can learn without writing down a learning objective or sticking in a success criteria.
While there’s much to like about the new DfE report on early reading, this paragraph here will make teachers sing from the rooftops. There are a million and one things that a teacher could spend their time on to improve reading for the pupils in their classes.
For longer car journeys,
@MissSDoherty
and I have revived the ‘yellow car’ game. It honestly makes for a good bit of light hearted fun. We wondered if ‘yellow car’ was a universal thing? Whose heard of it and who hasn’t?
Well it can now be said that from September I’ll be a Assistant Head Teacher for Teaching and Learning across our lovely little trust. Thank you to
@Bowiejcecc
@MoreMorrow
and
@WATReach
for the amazing opportunity. Looking forward to putting all the reading below to action.
A 🧵 of 📚 aimed at 🧑🏫 to support with subject knowledge without having to rely on sources like websites etc. I’d call these ‘scholarly-lite’ books. You don’t need to read them cover to cover, and they go way beyond what needs to be taught at primary, but they will help.

Primary context tweet klaxon. What if instead of teaching 6 units of history and geography every year, we just did 4 to give us some breathing space to actually revisit, reteach and embed learning rather than ploughing through 6 because there are 6 half terms?
If anyone is interested in the primary spellings for KS2 with associated morphological units and links to other tier 2 vocabulary (from
@Suchmo83
345 list) that share that morphological unit where possible, then crack on. Use as you see fit.
Made some time tables stuff for that little and often teaching that needs to happen. All x tables from 2 - 12 shown through 10 frames, arrays, bar models, counting stick and 100 square.
I know of one programme that actually teaches these facts in a systematic way. All other curriculum products basically ignore the facts and the corresponding strategies for number facts WITHIN 10. Interested to know what you do about teaching these in ks1.
State of the comment saying creativity was stifled because they had to paint the same bird. Same with music. Only once you’ve mastered the foundations can you then start to break the mould and get creative.
Wish I was told in my first year of teaching to have a task ready on the board, greet all the students good morning as they come in before taking the register, ensure that you find a good position to watch everything that’s happening instead of hiding things in envelopes…
Tired of moving things around Word and then the formatting moving all over the place? Use PowerPoint for all your worksheets to get fine grained placement of object. Head to to slide size, input the width and height values in the 2nd picture and then you an a4 sized slide.

Strongly believe that reading any one of these 6 books will make you a better teacher and provide enough cpd for teachers for years. If you are in the role of developing teachers, you can’t go far wrong with these.

Did anyone use to have to mark using a triangle as a code? All three sides would demonstrate complete understanding , just drawing 2 would mean partial understanding and one side of the triangle would mean no understanding. Fun times…
Devastated to say that today I lost my hero - my grandfather. He was everything a brilliant grandfather could be and a was fine example of what it means to be human - kind, caring and full of love. Signing out for a few days!
Delighted that from September I will be joining the STEP team as Deputy Head in one of their South London schools. Will be sad to leave my WAT family but looking forward to the new challenge!
To stop arguments can we please separate reading and decoding.
Decoding - taking the abstract symbols and translating them back to the sounds they spell.
Reading - the above + understanding the text. Phonics only teaches one of these things and has only ever claimed to.
While I made this account back in 2015, I didn’t really start using it until October 2018. I feel foolish for letting it go unused that long. I’ve learnt more on edu-twitter and have had opportunities I didn’t think I’d be capable of and learnt to love education again. Thank all
Realistically, SATs, GCSE and A-levels can’t really take place next year either as we wouldn’t be able to make valid inferences about a cohort that has missed 4 months of education???
Late last night I decided to write a few bits and pieces on early reading acquisition that would be useful to the secondary teacher off from a question based on last weeks
@EduClubhouse
.
Hopefully, it demystifies some aspects that are relevant for you.
The word ‘scrutiny’ needs to be removed from education. It’s a horrible word that immediately gives the impression that the scrutiniser has zero trust in the person across the room.
Takes a pandemic to see that some people are so driven by their ideologies, that they can’t appreciate free resources from people giving up their time over what should have been their Easter holiday. You don’t have to use them.
I don’t get the hype around fancy roadmaps. The time vs impact ratio is surely so low that you could have have just written everything in a table(easier to read) and actually planned the resources and lesson detail by the time you’ve presented something that few will look at.
Short little thread about what you get from our writing curriculum. 🧵
First off you get three views. There are the unit views, groups and topics. From here you will be able to see what the progression within a a particular topic or group looks like across the curriculum…
Always blown away by the increase in new content when comparing Y2 to Y3 in the national curriculum for maths. Trim it down and put a real focus on mastery of some core concepts (unitisation, area model and mental strategies) and the kids will fly later on.
😢💔joining the January curse of broken down relationships. The plus side is the unlimited amount of BrewEd’s and ResearchEds that I can now attend.

This from the DFE validation process is very interesting. I’ve heard of too much cursive and pre cursive handwriting being pushed into the younger years and it’s not helpful at all.
Of course the govt could have created a central bank of approved RSE resources that would have saved teachers’ time and allowed anyone to view them at the same time.
Can we talk about how wild some of the processes at interview are at the primary level? Definitely how not to draw candidates into the profession. What’s the wildest thing you’ve been asked to do as part of the interview process?

This article really gets to the heart of what I’ve think knowledge-rich curriculum is.
“The curriculum is future-oriented in that it aims at the formation of autonomous and responsible individuals who can thrive and flourish in the present and future world.”

A look at how we can create 'challenge' without resorting to different tasks.
Prediction: Primary schools that are only open to children of critical workers and classified as vulnerable won’t be back in full swing this side of Feb half term. Within 2 weeks, more schools will have to move to online learning.
SATs will still go ahead.
Let’s tork abowt speling for a moment: In most scenarios and teacher resource websites you get something like the below. Word lists.Seemingly random though there may be some ‘common exception words’ and subject specific vocabulary etc. They be arranged alphabetically, but some…

Over the last week, I’ve found the biggest admin time saver to be a photocopier that staples sets of work for you. These should be mandatory in all schools!
I honestly don’t know why an adult wouldn’t apologise to a child for getting something wrong. It’s a pretty fundamental part of the teacher/student relationship IMO
Teachers / school staff. Have you ever personally apologised to a pupil for making a mistake or doing something wrong?
Please RT for wider views. Thanks.
Cat’s out of the bag. Colleagues across STEP and Complete Maths have been working to bring our granular punctuation, grammar and sentence curriculum. With their platform and our teaching expertise, we think we have got something that will help really help…
I know it’s a bank holiday tomorrow but I think I’m going to have to set a normal school alarm as I don’t think I could cope with the shock of it on Tuesday!
As we near the beginning of term, I thought I would outline some maths blogs I have written that may help ECT’s or maths leads: For the maths leads:
Lots of talk about ‘mastery’ about. Have a look at how it gets used and what its origins are.
@ReadingExplorer
Really sorry that this is the way it has happen. Shame on the person who thinks this is remotely acceptable. No judgement here friend, only continuous support for what you do!
Have tried to write a blog (first one in ages), but I’ve really struggled so here’s the TLDR:
Next academic year KS1 assessment finally stop being a thing.
That means we have a rare opportunity to help those that find learning the hardest.
By the time KS1 sats come around…
Maybe I was unlucky but when I was training there was definitely a rule in one school that tables could be placed however you wanted EXCEPT rows. Genuinely curious if anyone has come across the same?
Nothing annoys me more than when a parent emails me, accusing me of not dealing with an incident of bullying even though their child has mentioned nothing to me. 😒
I swear some think we’ve got crystal balls and can see everything that goes on even when we’re not around?

this has somehow happened... 🤯. 5 years ago I was a failing teacher who had to leave a school mid-way through my NQT year and start again in September. It does get better!
Biggest issue with timetabling I’ve experienced at primary school is how the content is slave to the number of weeks in a half term. We seem to like the neatness of this. There will be two schools teaching the same science unit at different points in the year and each unit will..
Small victories but this is the first time time a BMI scale (I know they are not scientifically sound) has had me at normal for the first time in my adult life!
