In moments like these, you see how much heavy lifting our bus network actually does. It would only take 2 buses to clear that entire crowd.
Buses are crucial, moving 100,000s of people.
It's well past time for all-day bus lanes on major streets, like they have in other regions.
Downtown buses should not have to detour for an event that happens dozens of times a year.
They should be protected with bus lanes so the cruise traffic doesn't affect them. If the cruises bring in so much money, we can spare a few bucks for transit priority, right?

TransLink wants bus lanes.
City council wants bus lanes.
Movement wants bus lanes.
The only reason we don't have them yet is because there are powerful forces still opposed. But we'll win.
The fact we have articulated buses stuck in traffic w/o a lane, and for 2 cycles w/o any signal priority is a policy failure. the fact that I didn't get on the 19&25 I watched stuck in the traffic bc of how much this intersection prioritizes cars over ppl is also a policy failure
Why is transit ridership growing so fast on Surrey suburban buses like the 323?
This might have something to do with it. . .

What does this say to a transit rider who's been passed up by four 49s in a row?
If you want transportation support from the feds, go buy an electric car.
Why should you have to front $189.45 to get the best transit fares? It's an equity issue. In a growing list of cities including London and Edmonton, fares are simply capped.
Just pay as you go, and if you reach the value of a monthly pass, then the rest of your trips are free.
This is brilliant:
#Dublin
has “fare capping” on its public transport. When you buy a LEAP farecard, you get charged a max. of €5.60 a day, or €22 / wk, no matter how many rides you take on commuter rail/DART/trams/buses. Thnx to
@cianginty
for pointing this out
In other cities, automatic tickets go to cars that illegally use the bus lane. Our buses already have cameras! All we need is a tweak to BC law.
Notice the "SORRY BUS FULL" sign, meaning about 100 people being held up by a dozen cars.

PRESS RELEASE: Here's our response to Minister Fleming's announcement.
Movement is urgently calling for bus lanes, because we can't wait 2 yrs for relief from the overcrowding that is affecting so many transit riders. Read on to find out how it works:
Today, our govt. announced $300 million in
@TransLink
funding to address overcrowding on transit. More service hours on over 60 bus routes, addit. weekday SeaBus service & later HandyDART service will make transit more reliable for those who depend on it.
The only long term solution for this is to follow cities like New York, DC, Oakland, etc, in using cameras on the bus to enforce bus lanes.
We're calling on the province of BC to legalize Automated Bus Lane Enforcement.
"You know as well as I do that bus riders are doing us a favour. They’re the reason why we don’t have an additional 30,000 cars on 49th Avenue every day. Buying enough buses to reduce crowding is a bargain compared to the alternative."

Did you know TransLink won't even be able to increase frequency in rush hours for at least two years? We desperately need more bus lanes *now*, which will allow us to better use the buses we already have. Faster bus=more capacity, less overcrowding
At the
@APTA_info
conference, a Vancouver, Canada public transit planner said that they keep increasing frequencies to address overcrowding, but it just induces more ridership so the crowding comes back. We haven't begun to saturate the market for fixed route bus service in
We know

passed a motion last fall to implement bus lanes.
Since then, transit crowding has gotten worse, and TransLink doesn't have the buses to fix it.
We need urgent help.
This new council motion is council's opportunity to build more bus lanes, faster.
