Unsolicited advice for people sending good wishes to
@BorisJohnson
and other ill politicians/people. Leave out the caveat “I’m no fan of” etc because that really is your primary sentiment. Real love & good wishes are unconditional & about those loved or hoped for, not oneself.
THREE whole year groups in one of our daughters’ schools now have to self isolate due to a single positive lateral flow test in each year. This is unsustainable & so destructive for children who are typically not vulnerable to Covid. We need a serious policy change
@sajidjavid
!
It’s a very dangerous route to suggest or make real the threat that children cannot leave their university to visit their family for Christmas. Even to contemplate this is insane.
Sadly my darling mum passed away yesterday; I am so grateful for her love and kindness. There is so much to celebrate about her life but I am feeling her loss terribly. This picture is the last one taken of her with me and my dear sister Liz, earlier this month. I love you mum.
We had a scary tyre blowout on the M4 today. Thankfully just before the “smart motorway” part. I can’t imagine not being able to access the hard shoulder for safety. Who on earth thought no hard shoulder was smart and safe?

Such a shame that

This is disgraceful. Another reason why more & more people don’t buy newspapers anymore & zero via young people. We’ve stopped newspapers on weekdays & reduced our weekend purchase. And looking at the BBC/ITV etc tv schedules, we’re hardly watch anything. I’m sure we’re not alone

What is so disappointing is that many MPs of all parties probably agree with
@SirGrahamBrady
. I do! The credibility of our political process and our “unwritten” constitution are at stake now. Where are the real checks and balances? This precedent is so dangerous.
Excellent piece by Lord Sumption: we need to look at the Covid problem as a whole, considering social, educational, economic and other medical issues alongside public health. ‘There is more to life than the avoidance of death.’
@Telegraph
Closing thought: we are in a situation where 10s of millions of healthy people are assumed (if they can’t prove otherwise via fail test app) to be a threat to a relatively small number of vulnerable people, that we of course should protect. Burden of proof has flipped. Crazy.
Spot on Lord Sumption! “The absence of moral scruple in pursuit of what is thought to be a public good is the first symptom of totalitarianism.” Via

So that’s 228 people (sadly on ventilators) out of a population of 66.65 million. Whereas all the other more deadly illnesses, and mental health problems, and our closed down economy seem regelated to sideshows. We need some perspective and bravery.
Could we please have more transparency & open discussion about ‘the science’. We can handle it. Sweden without lockdowns claims fall in Covid-19 infection rate is down to immunity. Whereas here we have official focus on new lockdowns, 2nd waves & vaccines.
No holding back from
@CharlesWalkerMP

saying long-lasting lockdown is “bordering on very dangerous; robbing people of hope”.
He also says Matt Hancock has demeaned his position as health sec. by threatening 10-year jail terms for breach of travel rules.
@Jacob_Rees_Mogg
@StandUp4Brexit
The problem Jacob is that most normal people couldn’t care less about the Tory party or the Labour Party. But they do care about being respected & that politicians they voted for implement their decisions.
It might be “huge” in the media world but in the real world of 🇬🇧 most people don’t even know who Dom Cummings is. I’ve seen every day for years how “power works” in the financial & political world. For me the real issues are the economic disaster of ongoing lockdown and China.
Cummings story is huge, riveting, revealing about how power works in modern Britain, striking teamwork by Mirror/Guardian, and far from over.
But the UK’s overall handling of this crisis is a much, much bigger story. One of life and deaths. We must keep chasing that too.
Why is the focus now a “second wave”’ of fear (on what data?) rather than let’s take personal responsibility & get back to a more normal life now as the default? There is no way businesses & people will recover confidence with this negative signalling.
This was true then and is still true now despite the incredible fear mongering. The biggest theme of 2020 was FEAR. And that is so sad. 2021 has to be a year of push back & resilience / the threats will never end so we need to become more resilient as people & also institutions.
Remember when Chris Whitty told us the truth about the risk of Covid? Worth watching... It feels like a LONG time ago but everything he said was spot on. So what changed? 🤷🏻♀️
The UK parliament needs a complete overhaul & modernisation. It was depressing & embarrassing to watch the self indulgent antics there these past few days (and years!). It is the epitome of gaucheness & mediocrity. So off putting for smart people young & old who wish to serve.
.
@allisonpearson
Allison, I am so shocked by what’s going on. I am surprised that so few people and the media are not calling this out. Perhaps it is due to the organised fear.
One of the many issues people have with the media & the BBC is the “news” is so often just about the predictable media/political bubble. BBC is paid for by taxpayers - how many taxpayers think the D Cameron book is the most important news for them? It is the lead story tonight.
I really enjoyed the
@DavidGHFrost
interview with
@Nigel_Farage
@GBNEWS
just now. Lord Frost speaks such sense…good to hear he’s willing go into ‘real politics’ (as he put it!) ie stand for election.
So this is a new “strategy”? We were told months ago we needed these extreme restrictions on our liberty to help “our” NHS. Now this, when we have so few deaths & hospitalisations but huge problems with other illnesses. This is exactly why we need Parliamentary oversight.
#crazy
I loved visiting & watching
@Wimbledon
🎾 since my teenage years. I’m very uncomfortable with the decision to ban individual Russian tennis players just because of where they were born. This reinforces our toxic cancel culture & will lead to more division. And it’s not very 🇬🇧!
So much goes badly wrong when leaders haven’t the capacity to change their minds, given new info. They are too afraid of being seen to have made mistakes. But we all make mistakes. The way to recover is via honesty & transparency. Normal people understand. Life is difficult!
It’s normal 🏴 Freddie. We’re always keen on new people who love their new country. I don’t recall Owen Morgan playing the immigrant card. My Irish husband doesn’t think he’s an immigrant. He knows history. Honestly this identity/racial politics is toxic. We are a tolerant nation
👎 Very disappointing to see this vaccine passport proposal
🛑 No evidence published to justify it
🛑 No commitment to a Parliamentary vote in advance
Vaccine passports are *still*:
❌ Pointless
❌ Damaging
❌ Discriminatory

This is so grim. Political and public policy needs to fully engage with this now. The “curve”was flattened ages ago. “Our” NHS has survived, but this is the unfolding price...we need to piviot now to save the economy, lives and livelihoods. Stop the fear memes. Be bold, open up.
Imagine the response to a high profile person in another country saying this about their own nation - France as ordinary? the US? Russia? India? Ireland? Ghana? Australia? I don’t think it would be so indulged. I’m fed up with this depressing internal narrative about the UK.
It's the lack of ambition for Britain that so many of the chattering classes espouse that I find so depressing ... Britain will never just be an ordinary country
The
@SkyNews
interview with Pastor Beryl St.James is one of the best responses I’ve heard as to how knife crime can be tackled.
Politicians in London would do well to heed her advice regarding a holistic approach to challenging the toxic culture that surrounds carrying a knife.
Daughter’s “food box” delivered tonight via a knock on her room door and then the delivery person actually ran away. The whole atmosphere is fear driven. This is untenable.
@UniofOxford
I do not and have never denied the existence of the pandemic; I have always called for proportionate reactions and a balancing of the risks for different parts of the population. I believe that the data shows the pandemic is now over and we should be opening up more quickly.
I’ve no problem with referendums or any democratic vote. But I do have a problem when a democratic vote isn’t implemented. All democrats should be concerned when that happens. It’s all more fragile than people imagine.

The real world isn’t really like that David. People who plan and strategise to wait for when the time is right or for the “two steps” or that next time, usually miss the mark. “Fortune favours the bold”.
@KemiBadenoch
is bold. And I do believe fortune can favour her.
Kemi is brave and principled but going in straight at PM could see her come to grief quickly and destroy her long term chances. Better to do it in two steps.
High consequence infectious diseases (HCID) - - and Covid-19 isn’t one. So why is all the fear, control & craziness still in place? Let’s get the country back...or explain to why there is something we are missing.
Have a listen to this inspiring woman. She is so authentic and smart. And those Tory MPs concerned about their jobs at the next GE need to really consider if relying on sound bite “delivery” continuity candidates will be the change the public craves.

Am being asked what my reaction is to being cited in the ‘women need beauty to succeed in the boardroom’ articles; as I pondered (annoyed? insulted? bored?) my husband pointed out, ‘the thing is, you’re not even that attractive!’ 😂😂😂😂
There is still time to be BRAVE and pivot back to the Swedish model & sensibility, which did seem to be our initial 🇬🇧 approach until you know who from Imperial (or something we don’t know about) frightened the horses with failed & extreme modelling. It’s not too late!
This must stop. It’s embarrassing. Change the narrative ASAP! How on earth can we go back to normal or work properly when this is what we are told to do. I am not a child! There needs to be a pivot towards accepting risk & trusting people to take responsibility, otherwise...
It was an honour to be introduced to the

Again, where is this “in the event of a second wave” idea coming from? Where is the real science for this? If we stay in the seductive trap of excessive risk aversion we will tank the economy and people’s lives, jobs & mental health. And it will be “we” not Covid-19, doing this.
This is a very dangerous direction of travel with respect to what science actually is; our freedom of expression, diversity of thought, and democratic norms, irrespective of what anyone thinks about Covid-19.
I’m so sad about the treatment of young people, who should be living life to the max, excited about their futures and enjoying the present. A daughter has returned to Oxford; one of her ‘household’ (asymptomatic) tested positive; she received this.

The whole policy isn’t working. Let’s learn from our mistakes, not repeat them. PIVOT while we have a chance. We should not follow 🇫🇷 & other EU states into more extreme illiberal lockdowns/imprisonments that will destroy more lives, livelihoods and our children’s future

Sadly I agree. This 2nd lockdown will have a more negative impact than the first “save our NHS” clapping meme. There’s a darkness & depression descending. This is worse than March/April as many people/businesses have no bandwidth left. We need to change the policy/narrative now!

I went to a North London establishment on Friday evening. The owner told me that once he has to close on Saturday that's it he'll never open again. Khan will complain about the loss of revenue - this is on him. I can't see London recovering in the medium term (5 years?)

for now but please stop the Covid-19 propaganda. Actually I’m going to stop watching - none of this propaganda is on Bakeoff. Many people are watching to get away from the misery for a short time, not to be reminded!
Wishing you all a happy weekend. We need London (& the 🇬🇧) back working for real, along with normal schools, hospitality, businesses, and all our cultural & sporting events. Lets see some boldness & confidence again. We should focus on real data more than flawed models and fear!
This will stop you in your tracks. Unbelievable. We gave them the names of those we trained to fight them. And some we will leave behind to the violence we see at the airport.
An appalling day, verging from rage to tears.
Wake up 🇬🇧 we are succumbing to such extreme government interventions and the push back is just about non existent! Where are the bold people? This is insanity.
Retired nurse arrested after trying to 'rescue' 97-year-old mother from care home😕Never would I have imagined that the like of this could be reported in our country. Something deeply inhuman has encroached into our lives, our families and our institutions
Now is not the time for consensus. It’s a time to hold to your position & articulate your view. Compromise is so overrated. I learned that when I was an investor, where results are King. The middle ground of “unity” isn’t a place where most successful people spend a lot of time.
It really is serious - we live in a world of social media so all of this is seen & will stay in place - naive politicians might imagine normal people/voters don’t see what’s going on - but we see.
