The only (minor) difference between the modern usage of "democracy" and "republic" is that a "democracy" can have a non-elected HoS (e.g., a king); a "republic" is, if you like, more democratic.

You're misusing both terms. "Democracy" doesn't mean 6/10 people can steal your cow, and "republic" doesn't mean they can't. (In fact, "democracy" and "republic" mean the same thing; just different source languages, but by an odd twist modern usage allows a democracy to have an unelected head of state, thus potentially providing better protection against majoritarianism than a republic)
