School of the Year - BTEC Awards 2019
Filmed using a drone by Sixth Form students Tristan and Joe. Well done for shooting this footage before the school day started this morning. We're at risk of overdoing snow posts, but this was too beautiful not to share!

In response to a request from a nearby hospital, Mr Power is working in our Design & Technology workshop to create visors that can be used by front line hospital staff. They have also been offered to our local GP Surgery and other local key workers.

Today the IGCSE Agriculture class collected our new school hens from
@BHWTOfficial

Congratulations to our
@DofE
Gold Award sailors, who completed their assessed expedition around the South Coast over three days this week! Thank you to Mr Vigar, the sailing lead for the school, for helping to organise this opportunity.
With the end of
#SpeechDay
comes the end of the academic year. We couldn't be prouder with the achievements of our students. This culminated in
@MiltonAbbey
being recognised as BTEC School of the Year. We've been sent this brilliant video by

We're really proud of our Third Form pupil George. He met HRH The Prince of Wales and was interviewed at the opening ceremony for his family's expanded business in Poundbury, which he works at and helped renovate. [HRH photo is Copyright Finnbarr Webster & Duchy of Cornwall.]
A historic moment on our fabled Main Pitch this afternoon, as we held our first girls' contact rugby matches. The MA team and our guests from
@BWordsworths
couldn't have been more up for the fixture, deciding to play two Sevens matches, followed by a 13-a-side fixture.
Delighted to be selected as next Governor of Edinburgh Castle by
@BritishArmy
. The Queen, descendant of Robert the Bruce, approved & I will take over in June. This Bruce is now moving home to Scotland, land of my ancestors, to serve principal fortress & emblem of Scottish nation.
We have produced and delivered another batch of visors. With local NHS facilities now well-stocked, we've been able to respond to requests to help a care home and a hospice. Between teaching lessons, Mr Power is still making more.

Sixth Formers completed a practice sailing expedition for their
@DofE
Gold Award over three action-packed days. The intrepid crew made return voyages from
@ParkstoneYC
to Studland, Lymington and Yarmouth. They remained focused, positive and pulled together to make it a success.
Best of luck to our eight students who are taking part in the Southern Region trials for the Independent Schools' Football Association
@isfafootball
today. All have benefited from our Elite Football Programme, run in conjuction with
@ChampionGoup
.
Check out this great video of innovative furniture designed by Sixth Former Lucas P-J. We have entered it for the national Young Furniture Maker's Design Award, which we were proud that a Milton Abbey student won last year. 1/2
Look at this gorgeous and delicious food that was served by our new catering partner
@HolroydHowe
for our Chrismas Socials this weekend. The students loved it!
We are excited to announce we are working with

Thank you to everyone who brought in a Christmas shoebox after the half-term break, for the
@RotaryGBI
appeal. 36 disadvantaged young children in Moldova or Albania will now get Christmas presents thanks to the generous people who contributed.
After a delicious BBQ supper with homemade sauces and multiple salads, our new pupils enjoyed sunset games of rugby, baseball and football, organised by the Student Leadership Team. They're now having their first house meetings with their HSMs, before some time to socialise.
Cold but beautiful at school today. Thankfully the roads are all passable and it isn't due to freeze again, so journeys to and from school shouldn't be disrupted for day pupils.
Lower Sixth Form Hospitality students, Archie and Leah, are holding a handmade sweets sale in our Tuck Shop. It's proving very popular with pupils and staff alike (including the writer of this post!) during this morning's break.
The Senior Football team played Kings Bruton yesterday. A 6-1 win for MA followed a game that was played with great spirit and respect from both sides. Well done to James C for his hat-trick and to everyone for the superb team set-ups. Thanks
@KingsBruton
for being great hosts.
Congratulations to former student, Jemima who has been awarded The Outstanding Achiever’s Scholarship at
@RoyalAgUni
, Cirencester for her triple Distinction Star academic success at Milton Abbey. She is due to study Applied Equine Science with Business.
We are all very proud.
The sun sets over freshly marked playing fields, for a final quiet night before pupils start making their journeys back to school. All the staff at Milton Abbey can't wait to have you back and for the sounds of learning, friendship and fun to return.

We are celebrating a rise in GCSE grades. Head, Judith Fremont-Barnes, said: "Congratulations to all our students on their GCSE and BTEC results. It is great to see pass rates in English and Maths significantly up, as a result of the hard work of our young people and teachers.
We're delighted that James Ratcliffe, Head of the Design & Creative Faculty at

We're so proud of Alistair N and Jack W (M6th) who received their
@DofE
Gold Awards at Buckingham Palace yesterday. This was the culmination of a demanding and varied range of adventure, service and self-resilience activities that they have embarked on at Milton Abbey. 1/2
A fun clip for the end of the half-term: Third Form Creative Media pupils were asked to combine CGI videos with their own footage to create an exciting monster film. Jack A-M has done an excellent job at storyboarding, directing and editing this masterpiece.

Our students may be away, but there's still activity at the Milton Abbey School Farm! Nature doesn't stop for the school holidays. This mother runner duck has recently hatched her chicks.

These awesome photos were taken by new Third Form pupil Eddie D from a drone this afternoon. Absolutely spectacular views of the site, looking glorious on a sunny afternoon!
We are celebrating with the Class of 2020 who have achieved a wonderful set of results at the end of a really challenging year. Results released today show our Sixth Form students have achieved a 100% pass rate in both A-Levels and BTECs.

Challenging conditions for our
@DofE
Gold students on Exmoor. They walked yesterday in heavy rain with limited visibility, putting their map reading and navigation to the test. Thankfully they arrived at camp on time, were in good spirits overnight and were off again early today.
Milton Abbey is today celebrating a fantastic set of A-Level and BTEC results. In the year in which we were named BTEC School of the Year we are delighted to have a 100% pass rate in BTECs with 60% achieving the top grade of a triple Distinction* in their Extended BTEC Diplomas.
This weekend, students are enjoying their Christmas Socials in the Abbots Hall. Lower School pupils had their event last night and tonight it's the Sixth Formers' turn. Thank you to our House Staff, Housekeeping and Catering teams for all their hard work.

Thank you
@MiltonAbbey
for today’s sport and the warmest of welcomes - my first visit to this beautiful and unique school, one I have admired from afar for many years

We doubt there are many schools looking as picturesque! Most staff and day pupils have made it in. We're making some time for pupils to enjoy the snow too. We've already had sledging and snowball fights before classes start at 10:30.

We've had a lovely afternoon welcoming new students and their families. Our Heads of School and Pilots did a sterling job making their new friends feel at home. Thankfully the rain held off, so pupils, families and teachers were able to enjoy afternoon tea on the Abbey Lawn.
The Head, Judith Fremont-Barnes, is at the
@Bett_show
event in London today, enjoying inspirational presentations from some of the world's leading technology speakers. It's been a great chance to explore ideas that will help take MA to the next stage in our use of education tech.
A fantastic day was had by the boys First XI Hockey Team. They took part in the Tier 4 Regional Finals
@MillfieldSenior
with a great attitude and some good play, even though results didn't go our way. Thank you
@EnglandHockey
for developing this excellent tournament structure.
Students have enjoyed their sports sessions since coming back to school. They're being played in Boarding House bubble groups, to keep everyone as safe as possible, but there has still been lots of variety on offer.
We're disappointed not to be playing as usual this term. Missing our usual fixtures with other schools, the MCC and
@TheOfficialMAA
. Our students are still having virtual cricket skills sessions online and we do hope to play some live cricket in September.
It's the start of
#Exeat
for our pupils. This time, some of our longer-distance international families are making the most of a new option for their children to stay with us over the weekend, as it can be difficult for them to get home and back for the short break.
#LoveBoarding
It's the end of a busy first day back to school for our students and staff. The Christmas break no doubt seems a long time ago! This impressive new aerial photo was taken by Driftwood Media over the holidays. Please let us know what you'd like to see on social media this term.
Not every school has a Farm Club as part of their weekly activities programme. We do! This Wednesday, their trip to a local milking parlour was a huge success. After some apprehension - many of the pupils had never set foot on a farm until this term - everyone got involved.
We have two
@DofE
Gold Award teams out on Exmoor doing their practice expeditions. They planned the routes themselves and will be completely self sufficient. 20km covered today since 6:30am and they have two more nights' camping and hiking ahead of them. Well done!
Students and staff have observed two minutes' silence for
#RemembranceDay
. We're sharing this beautiful rendition of 'Lacrymosa - Do Not Stand At My Grave and Weep' performed by the choir, featuring photos of recent remembrance services.

As students depart for their first Exeat of the academic year, we're sharing these atmospheric photos of a misty Milton Abbey taken by receptionist Linda on her way to work. To our students: enjoy the long weekend, get some rest too, and we look forward to welcoming you back.
Day Pupils have been making the most of the weather this week to continue 'taking lunch' on the Abbey Lawn. With a selection of freshly prepared salads, pasta dishes, sandwiches, baguettes and wraps on offer, we can't think of many nicer places to enjoy a picnic with your friends
As planned, Black and Gold Day ended with an epic tug'o'war on the Abbey Lawn and a great BBQ in the quad provided by our catering partners
@HolroydHowe
. We've been so lucky with the weather and it looks to continue for a wonderful Speech Day tomorrow: don't forget the sun cream!
"The Virgin Group will not ask anyone for their exam results ever again", Richard Branson told the

Global Summit. He spoke about his experiences as a young man and credited dyslexia with kick-starting his entrepreneurial spirit. [Open this thread to read more...]
Students enjoyed a great ‘Try Polo’ session this week. We took two groups that had never played polo, with all riders learning to use the mallet, control the horse and then combine the two. Lots of natural talent was on display and everyone came away with big smiles.
This afternoon, in glorious September sunshine, we hosted our inaugural U11s Football Festival. The four teams played each other over an action-packed two hours, with an impressive level of football skills on display. There were some tired feet at the end of the event!
