I was interviewed by the St. Olaf College magazine, reflecting on the impact my university had on me, the dreams I'm still fighting for, and the advice I'd give to current students and fellow alumni.

Diving into covering Hollywood/entertainment — today's my first day as a news editor for
@TheWrap
!
I'll be leading our weekend coverage, as well as contributing during the week.
Wish me luck, and I'll be keeping an ear — and DMs — open for tips/scoops/etc.
LET'S GOOOOOOOOO!
I was one of the 21 folks laid off from
@LAist
today.
After 15 years in public media, it's definitely a shock.
I'll be all right, but if you hear about opportunities that seem like a good fit for a journalist/writer like myself, please hit me up.
Pulling for my colleagues. ❤️
Hi friends — wanna see something cool?
I spent the pandemic writing a book about 30 Rock. I did more than 50 interviews. I learned a lot, and found out so many amazing stories.
I'll be talking about it a lot more, but for now, you can preorder it here!
I wrote this piece about yet another COVID-19 death, this time of a filmmaker who documented the history of the Black Panthers in L.A. — and was one of the first DJs on the West Coast to play hip-hop in the early 1980s.
I interviewed Paul Reubens about this role for my 30 Rock book. He was incredibly kind & generous with his time, and made sure to credit everyone he worked with as much as possible.
The story of how he first connected w/ Tina Fey is such a perfect encapsulation of his spirit.
Lots of talk about Paul Reubens as Pee Wee (and rightfully so) but his turn as an adult Habsburg child on 30 Rock still remains one of the funniest episodes of television I've ever seen. RIP to a legend.
The Saved By The Bell reboot on Peacock has been effortlessly diverse, full of heart, and stuffed w/ excellent jokes.
Tracey Wigfield & Co., coming from the lineage of the 30 Rock writers' room, made something truly worthy of that pedigree.
Its cancelation is a huge bummer.
Not sure how private he would want this, but I talked w/ one of my favorite writers and he independently brought up the Snyder Cut and how much he liked it.
He’s not on social. So, just a writer appreciating good art. (Can confirm he is not a bot.)
(unless bots eat brunch)
Will add that it was also way easier to remember where we left off with a TV show when you had weekly releases & the time between seasons was like 3 months.
Now it's 8 episodes that you binge immediately and must remember for the next 2-3 years.
I hate when a new season of a tv show starts without a recap of what happened last season. you expect me to remember? my brain is a little puddle of apple sauce sloshing around my skull. I have lived many lives since then. please just tell me what I need to know
“We don’t read. This is the Tonight Show. You wanna go over to Stephen Colbert if you wanna get people that read books.”
You could hear a PIN DROP I’m fucking crying help ??? 💀
Y'all, if you aren't watching The Orville, GET. ON. BOARD.
One of the absolute best shows on TV right now. And Season 3 leveled up in a huge way.
I am ADHD and have so much trouble putting down my phone, but I PUT IT DOWN and soak in this show. The best action & ethics around.
One of my colleagues was shot by a rubber bullet. Another of my colleagues is investigating.
If you have any information that can help identify these officers, or know someone who does, please let one of us know.
After pledging transparency,
@LBPD
declined to ID the officer who shot
@AGuzmanLopez
w/ a foam round. Adolfo deserves to know who shot him — and if that officer has a history of using force.
Maybe you can help. We'd like to talk to the 3 officers w/ launchers in this photo.
My mom died last week. She was the dopest.
Here she is doing dope things, with the world’s best smile, no matter what life threw at her.
Love you forever, Mom. ❤️
So curious why the Joss Whedon Zoom got pulled from the virtual Comic-Con schedule, especially when it already had a YouTube link. 🤔

30 Rock is great! 30 Rock has some problematic elements!
I wrote a book exploring the nuances of this show — great comedy means taking big swings — and I dove deep on where it fell short for Vanity Fair.

“It’s easy for a show like 30 Rock to punch down without even realizing that it’s punching”: The author of a new book about the series explores celebrating its triumphs without overlooking the troubling way it handled race.
I remember how my mom would buy a few gallons in at a time — maybe asking for 5 or 10 dollars worth — and how everyone at the bank knew her so well after I had to visit there after she died, because she was there all the time, because, well, capitalism.
Poor people are trying.
Thinking about how poor people are shamed for simple luxuries like cable television.
Also how my mom was poor but always had cable TV, because life is hard and even harder for the poor, and being able to escape from that for even a moment is magical.

Just putting out there that we’re hiring at

If you’re looking for work, it’s an environment I recommend.

If you want to read about the FIRST Asian man to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, check out my piece on Haing Ngor for
@LAist
.
He won for 1984’s The Killing Fields — and was tragically murdered just over a decade later.
Ke Huy Quan is the second Asian actor to win Best Supporting Actor (though several have won Best Supporting Actress before) —
but Haing Ngor was the first, winning for 1984’s The Killing Fields. You can read about his amazing win & tragic murder here:

Managed to get the eclipse-through-the-iPhone shot to work during our peak here in L.A.
Will now consider myself the world's best photographer, thank you for acknowledging me.

It’s sad and all about Superman’s death, but I think Team Luthor will take good care of us!
And these other two seem promising as well!
I wish every famous person's Wikipedia included a section on how much family money they come from and how they landed their early jobs in Hollywood.
I want to know when to temper how inspired I am by their stories.

SO! I wrote a book about 30 Rock, and it's OUT TODAY.
I hope it gives you joy, insight, and amazement at Tracy Morgan's real-life love of sea creatures & the resulting real-life flooding. (BLERG.)

's THE 30 ROCK BOOK. If you loved the show, you will LOVE this wonderful book. Mike spoke to so many people in and around the show and offers the definitive (and hilarious, and insightful) account that it deserves:
I love how Gail Simone’s reaction to social media continues to be, “How do I troll the most people the most of the time? 🤔”
Exactly how I’ll use any small success I ultimately achieve. Legendary poster behavior. 🤘🏽🙌🏽

I really enjoyed talking with

about all things AEW, pro wrestling more broadly -- and we even got into politics toward the end of the show. Check it out 👇
"I would urge you not just to read good books, read terrible books too — because they can be more inspiring than the good books... A genuinely helpful reaction to something you’re reading is 'I could write this s---.' That is immensely liberating.”

WHEW, thankful Elon didn’t kill the Twitter profile page birthday balloons yet. 🙏🏽
(Shhh, don’t let him see this. Though I guess he probably name searches for all uses of the name Elon, oh well)
It's a reeeeeal bummer when you have to cross things off your post-pandemic to-do list because the friend you were planning to do them with died of COVID.

Very curious to see what Tom King & Jorge Fornés’s Rorschach book has to say about now.
There are some huge shoes to fill coming off the heels of the Watchmen TV show. Excited to see if one of my favorite writers & one of my favorite artists can do it.
“First, platforms are good to their users.
"Then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers.
"Finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves.
"Then, there is a fourth stage: they die.”

This may be a little dramatic, but as someone who’s mixed race myself, that push and pull is a big part of the appeal of Aquaman for me. Excited to see some of my own diversity added in the film version.

Prayers up to my family in Hawaii — aunts, uncles, 19 cousins, their kids, spouses.
Here with you all, sitting in anxious anticipation and hope for safety and that things will get better.
It wasn’t that long ago we witnessed people in Australia being forced to flee into the ocean to try to escape wildfires.
Now we’re witnessing the same thing happen in Hawaii.
