@NYCModerate No parent cares about NAEP. Why would our kids and grandkids be significantly better at the same reading and math as their parents?

@BoarderMiah @FrannieBlock @TheFP Tests are different. Also proficiency doesn’t mean “able to read out loud.” Even the weakest readers can mostly do this by high school. Proficiency is just a cut score on the test.

@FabiusMaximus01 @FrannieBlock @TheFP Just comparing dollars spent is limited. Did we learn things about what entails quality education since 1960? Did we do things like install fire alarms and stop using asbestos? Perhaps your critical lens needs widening.

@FrannieBlock @NYCModerate @TheFP Why would scores be significantly higher than the past? We are absolutely the same relative intelligence as our parents and grandparents generations. It’s weird we think we’d be miles better. Data backs me up too. Same basic NAEP results since 1971.

@NYCModerate Being left back is a class size issue too. But being held back is also emotionally scarring and virtually overrides any benefits that might be acquired.

@4TiffanyJustice Proficiency is a normed cut score that is arbitrary. Don’t pretend it’s some amazing independent standard. Proficiency is also not the same thing as having the ABILITY to read. I’m confused whether you know that or not.

@PebsFromBoston @NYCModerate @4TiffanyJustice Right because Gen X all graduated being just amazing at math 😆. School districts can’t raise or lower grad requirements. They’re set by the state. Also states tweak the cut score every single year. Sometimes up, sometimes down. Testing is a terrible way to monitor quality.
