The evolution of my Gum art.
A thread:
I first began sketch painting gum sticks on the backs of '85 Topps with the intent to create a photo realistic illusion. A handful of sketches were made until I perfected my technique with texture, highlighting & shadows.
I hijacked a wall by
@DFaceOfficial
in Vegas for an '87 Donruss Greg Maddux RR. Great location for the hometown legend.
I've always loved the orange backs of this set, just as much as the fronts.
The realtor didn't stand a chance at selling this sad stack of bricks, until I added a rendition of the famously airbrushed Greg Minton
#312
to the corner.
Recently had the pleasure of making a gift for
@PitchingNinja
. The ninja is hidden in a traditional Japanese Seigaiha wave pattern, and layered above 1989 Topps

Greg Maddux cards. Really happy with how this turned out!
@CEmma670
People won't be laughing at this pick, when their favorite team is trailing Caleb by 2 scores in the 4th QTR... and have just been pinned inside their 5-yard line by Taylor. 😃
Apparently, when I was a kid... I was very concerned about Damon Berryhill. So, I wrote a letter to Don Zimmer. He wrote back 😁
Of course now... I've been a proud STH for several years. Good stuff
@Cubs
!
In '81, Topps introduced their first "Traded" set... basically a software update. 132 cards were packaged in small boxes & rotated in color each year. Red ('81), Blue ('82), Green ('83), Brown ('84) & Purple ('85).
I designed this massive 20x60 acrylic print to celebrate it.
Wanted to take a moment, in-thread-form, to acknowledge the main catalyst for my journey into creating Junk Wax-inspired artwork.
Must've been sometime in 2018, when I first discovered the work of
@timcarrollart
. Like many of you, I was awestruck. “Brilliant,” I thought.
In '81, Topps introduced their first boxed "Traded" set. 132 cards of players either dealt to new teams, or who didn't have a card printed yet.
These small boxes rotated in color each year. The inaugural set was Red, then Blue ('82), Green ('83), Brown ('84) & Purple ('85).

I believe this was Dawson's 1st card in a Cubs uniform & was the only year Donruss issued their OD set... which featured everyone in the starting lineup for the 1st game of the season.

The hedges on the patio always remind me of Wrigley... so, I made this for kicks.

I've painted bubble gum onto backs of baseball cards & cards onto giant sticks of gum. I've even made real edible gum! Just a few of my favorite things.
RT to help spread my work.
Portraits aren't really my thing... I prefer to focus on the design elements of old baseball cards. But
@jumbotronart
suggested I do one. So... here's Bo! 1986 Topps Traded. It looks sweet... however, I don't intend to make many like this.

Way too many people along the lakefront without masks. Almost everyone I see. They're not listening to experts or
@chicagosmayor
. Maybe they'll listen to the GOAT?
I took matters into my own hands & painted this traffic sign in Rogers Park. Wear a mask & keep your distance!
I suppose MLB will be selecting a new vendor to manufacture next year's awards.
You'd think someone along the way in the process would've caught the spelling mistake... especially on such a high profile job?

Starting a new series of work... sampling some of my favorite parts of pop culture.
I'm very excited! For months I've been unable to commit toward any of the many creative ideas stuck in my head. I finally took the leap.

610 sculpture. 40th anniversary of these stripes! Wrapped with Rickey's sig... one of the most aesthetic signatures from the Junk Wax era.
Charlie Hustle is probably earning more from his ban from baseball, than he would be as a member of the HOF. I used '85-87 Reds Topps to recreate his sig... the years he gambled while managing the team. Black paint... cause he's been blackballed.

Concepts for wall art. Which version do you like best?
I challenge you to show me a better card.
One of the most aesthetically pleasing cards of the Junk wax era:
- Future Star graphic
- Iconic '89 script & ribbon
- A+ centered headshot & lighting
- Braces
- Gold Chain
- Correctly predicting the future (Sheff was a stud)

MLB tries numerous things to speed up the game... to attract younger fans.
Yet:
1. They schedule playoff games on school day afternoons.
2. They broadcast playoff games on TBS & FS1 during an era of cord cutting.
3. Mike Trout could walk through your neighborhood unrecognized.
The average age of MLB fans is 57. That’s up from 50 in 2000. A good way to slowly kill baseball is to make sure young people either can’t watch or don’t care. MLB does both exceptionally.
Flew home from Bangkok & finished my 3rd gum stick ('82 Topps Rickey), before I fly again tomorrow. Experimenting with technique & color tone to nail down the powdery gum texture on a large scale. Actual card next to it on the wall for size reference. Which one do you like best?

The baseball card market is gonna crash hard.
Only question is... who gonna be holding the bag? You? Or Fanatics?
Let it be Fanatics.
Don't buy this shit today. Don't contribute to this false market. You can grab your favorite cards at massive discounts in the future.
The T206 Wagner 5-foot cig is complete! Key features:
- Portrait of Honus
- Exact lettering from the card
- Decorative gold ring
- A filter at the bottom
- Tobacco at the top
Evolving gum sticks! The '52 Mantle... most expensive card in the hobby ($12.6 mil).
Continuing my narrative on the print process of bubble gum cards... I incorporated halftone, layered the design elements & applied paint with a squeegee to create a screen print effect.
