Went back to 1 more lot. We pretended to be newlyweds just for fun. See if someone would offer a deal. I don't think either one of us realized that would be our first date. A used car lot in Queens. A few months later, we weren't pretending to be newlyweds. 15 years ago today.

A grey January Friday. I stood up from my desk, flipped off the light, put my coat on, and started to leave the office. The girl in the cubicle next to me asked if had any big plans for the weekend. Typical office chit-chat.

Nothing really. Going to watch some football. And I want to go look at some used cars. I had just moved to NYC a few months ago, and a car would be useful. "Oh, my family's never had a car." She was from the Bronx. City girl. "I've always been curious to learn about them."

You can come along if you want... I walked up the stairs from the subway and entered the street. There were a bunch of used car lots on this stretch of Northern Boulevard in Queens. She was waiting there. We looked at a few cars. Nothing good. Grabbed a sandwich at a deli.

The craziest thing about the Tucker interview is how people are blown away by Putin eloquently discussed Russian history for half an hour. This should be normal behavior. A head of state should be able to give an impromptu college level lecture on his nation's history.

Reviewing a historic structure. To properly understand it, I am studying the 1937 steel code. It is 20 pages long. Our current steel code is over 2000 pages long. They built the Empire State Building with the 20 pager. It's still standing. There's a lesson in there somewhere.

My HS had a dress code. One of the arguments was you behave the way you are dressed. I agree with that premise. When I was a kid, cops wore slacks and dress shirts w/ a duty belt. Today, cops are tacticool. I wonder if that affects their behavior?

I've been fortunate to have traveled a lot. Mostly with the military. Most places "felt foreign." But in places where a large fraction of my DNA is from (per 23 & Me) I felt "at home." Sounds hokey, but I wonder if there is a "genetic memory" for geography?

The current expectation of full central HVAC and A/C as a basic need is a hard to deny example of recent rises in living standards. 1985, many northern houses had zero A/C. Many in Southeast only had a window unit, or "swamp cooler" in the Southwest. Unthinkable now.

I got fooled by this last year. It seemed like a lot of train wrecks. Turns out there were always train wrecks. You just never heard about it & for some reason the news cycle started picking them up. Is there a name for this phenomenon? If not, I dub it, "Train Wreck Syndrome"

Have bolts always not been tightened on airplanes, or is this a new fad? Is this like the train derailment thing awhile back? Where it seemed like there were a stupid number of derailments, but turned out the average has actually always been one like every 8 hours or so?

Can we find the dude from the bagel shop and give him a medal or something? Hero of New York or something? Well done. Way to represent.

@Empty_America Worked with homeless for awhile in NYC. Not a monolithic block. Some might be helped by mental health or addiction care. A few down on their luck. For a plurality, possibly majority (my unofficial count) it's a lifestyle. They wouldn't take housing if you gave it to them.
