We are on scene at Pacific Mall. Our crews could see heavy black smoke while responding. Crews have accessed the roof and extinguished the fire. Efforts continue to ensure there is no additional extension and ventilation of smoke is taking place. Fire cause is being investigated.
Today the City of Markham’s Fire and Emergency Services, along with the Markham Professional Firefighters Association honoured 2 of our bravest.

Hopefully you have installed smoke alarms on every floor
@cityofmarkham
But do you know if they are in the right place? This image will show you where they should and should not go. If they are not installed properly by the owner/landlord, they may not give you the time you need.

if the buildings fire alarm system was out of date?
If your children are learning remotely, it is just one more reason to make sure you have working smoke alarms on every floor.

FIRE FACT: In 2018 the Garage surpassed the Kitchen as the leading room of origin in fires that we responded to. Kitchen had previously been the leading room of origin for the past decade. A lack of early detection in the garage typically allows fires to go undetected & intensify
Techniques to back-up the nozzle firefighters allow for efficient movement & stability
@cityofmarkham
Firefighters are practicing on the 45mm line. Once they master these technique, we move them up to the 65mm line which can have a nozzle reaction of over 100lbs!

Hey
@cityofmarkham
DYK laptops that are left on soft surfaces like beds or couches can be dangerous? Laptops can get hot! Soft surfaces can block air intakes on the bottom or side that keep them cool. This can cause overheating and start a fire. Run your laptop on a hard surface.
