How much do you know about CO? Carbon Monoxide (CO) is commonly reffered to as "the silent killer". It is colourless and odorless, virtually undetectable without the help of a CO alarm. CO alarms are not just a good idea though, it is also the law to have at least one outside each sleeping area of the home. Homes with fuel-fired appliances and/or an attached garage require these alarms. There are many types of devices from combination units (smoke and CO alarms), wall-mounted units, and plug-ins with battery back-up. Unsure of which you need? This week's fire safety tip focuses on your dryers! When is the last time you checked your dryer duct pipe and the exterior vent? This is something we urge you to regularly maintain to prevent dryer fires. When it's this cold, it's likely small animals are keeping warm in your exterior vents. CYFS crews are constantly working on improving their skills to serve our community. They train in full gear in the heat of summer or the freezing temps of the winter. 🔥🧊🌧️❄️ Emergencies can happen at any time. Training in diverse conditions helps us prepare, every incident demands different things from each of us. Do you have a family member or neighbour who could use the extra hand shoveling their walk-way? This act of kindness goes a long way. Here are our last three tips to help you keep your holiday fire-free: 🔥 SPACE HEATERS AND FIREPLACES Keep at least 1 Metre (3 feet) of distance between your heat source and anything that can burn 🚬SMOKING MATERIALS Improper disposal of smoke materials is the TOP CAUSE of fatal fires in Ontario.
