@michaelreid52
A very apt summary. No mudslinging will change if the PM and the government do not exemplify and lead the change. But the speech itself is incredibly polarising and confrontational. There's no hope.

This highly cited paper of mine, long lost for indexes & search engines, is coming back home. Thank you editor Vasso Kindi for getting Taylor & Francis to correct the spelling of my name online. It's a hard battle for those of us with non-English names:

makes sense. There is a place in epistemology for quietism (neutralism on the realism-antirealism debate). It's all in the last chapter in my forthcoming book:

No, it's not the kind of thing that I normally talk about, sorry. Loosely speaking scientific realists believe that the mathematical structures in our theories describe something which actually exists. They approximate the true essence of things somehow, whatever that might mean.
@spidermanzano

Some of us philosophers have been practicing "slow philosophy" for a long time now.
Yielding to hyperactivity not only can ruin people's lives but the quality of their work goes down too. It also sets a very bad competitive example for others, particularly the young.

Thank you for this statement. We are badly going to need our European allies during the unprecedented attack on the rule of law over the next few years
There will be a book launch event for Inference and Representation on November 24. A hybrid event that will take place physically in Lisbon but also available to watch online. You may register at the link (and thus receive a 30% discount voucher):

The foreign media, academics, and political commentators love our civil war. They project their idealism into it (it's the reason many of them were attracted to Spain in the first place), so deep in their heart they want that war to continue and try to keep it alive.
What brave professor with the right political sensibilities, impeccable lack of plagiarism in his record, and genial social media account filled with bonhomie could see Harvard through this tough time? If only such a hero would arise from the masses...

I signed a contract for a book with OUP today. It then struck me that it is remarkable that it is my first with them - given OUP's presence in philosophy. I signed contracts with Routledge, Springer, Cambridge, and Chicago University Press before.
Boycotting Israeli academics at this time is beyond mad. It is morally defunct.
I have of course signed and encourage anyone working in the current rabid antisemitic climate in Spain to sign (our universities get an emphatic mention in the letter).
John Dupré gives his second Lullius lecture and a wonderful and imposing quote from David Hume lurks in the background.
At which point I could not help wonder if we collectively measure up to the heights of the Scottish Enlightenment.
Delighted to act as a consultant in this project on Mary Hesse, and at this week’s conference on Scientific Representation. The meeting was exemplary on several grounds — all credit to the organizers Pietro Gori and Maria Grazia Rossi

I'm going off twitter for a while. My country has been worringly sliding towards an authoritarian regime not unlike Venezuela during the last few months, which has exercised me greatly. But there is only so much I can do, and I have already published in national media, etc.

Sánchez is fighting for his survival. He needs a worldly 'European statesman' status for it. He has shown us already he is prepared to do anything to retain power and won't stop at anything. That's what's happening.
Today's new episode: we look at "second scholasticism" in Spain and Portugal in the 16th century, when ambitious philosophical projects at Salamanca, Coimbra and elsewhere culminated in the brilliant work of Suárez:
It hardly comes as a surprise, but still it's sad news.

Signed and I encourage everyone to sign, particularly those working at Spanish Universities, given the moral crusade launched by the government and University authorities against Israel.

The level of willful ignorance and misrepresentation in the international media in the run up to the Spanish election has been stunning - and upsetting to me since it has mainly come from the left. If you are going to read one thing, this is not unfair:

I’m afraid that I am slowly coming to this view too. It entails some departure from lessons I learnt many years ago from John Dupré, and it saddens me a bit to find myself agreeing on this one with Dawkins instead. But the more I read, the stronger the evidence seems to be.
Dear philosofriends on X: if you are reading this you know that current political events in Spain take a bit of my time at present. No one has complained but I am mindful I may be flooding your feed, and would understand if you mute me for a bit. /1
re-reading Hobbes, Smith, Mill, Constant, and the splendid yet frustrated Spanish liberal tradition, up to Ortega, and catching up with the contemporary literature. But twitter is not right now the forum to do this. I expect to be back soon though. See you at the other end.
