Don’t laugh behind their back if they can’t do simple things. I was independently performing neurosurgical procedures before coming to the Uk, but I needed help to cannulate a patient because I didn’t know the colours of the tubes, etc.

1- Shocked IMG doctors are shocked by so many changes at the same time. - Cultural shock - Financial shock - Logistics shock The list can keep going. Just imagine yourself starting a new job in a country that doesn’t speak your native language and not having similar culture.

An overdue ceremony Finally managed to attend my FRCS ceremony. @RCSEd president advised everyone to explore life outside medicine, keep your hobbies and interact with all other science disciplines. Get yourself outside this box, there is a lot to learn.

Your corridor talks and jokes are likely not understood. They can’t engage because they simply don’t understand. Encourage them to participate and explain the context of your talks and jokes.

I am a neurosurgeon, my most stressful time was not a complex operation It was my early days trying to figure out how things work. Don’t be bothered if they ask a lot. Offer longer shadowing, mentoring or big buddy periods.

7- Professional Development Most IMGs know nothing about portfolio, appraisal, WBAs, etc They lose years without anyone telling them you need to do so and so. - Make sure they are aware of opportunities from day one. - Offer them support. - March them with a trainee for 6-12mo

2- Language Yes, they pass IELTS etc But day to day language is something else. Not to mention different accents in different UK regions. - Ask them if they need help. - Explain things twice if needed. - Make sure they understand what you are saying, because they might not.

Me and @calan_mathieson offered to take patient back to the ward. It was not the easiest job to do, opening the doors and steering the bed. Our porters are a very valuable members of our team and deserve appreciation. Just wanted to say Thank You to all who make our job easier.

@Lamboozler Totally agree with your points that the deterioration is because of the compound effect of years of not actively acting on the chronic problems. I won’t take it that everyone posting selfie is self promoting rather than just showing support.
