Supporting recovery from technology-assisted child sexual abuse
United Kingdom
Joined January 2014
đ¨ New Resource Alert! đ¨ đ˘ Calling all frontline practitioners đ˘ Yesterday we launched our brand new support intervention tool: POWER (Path of Wellness, Empowerment & Recovery). With the support of @HFCglobal we have created a free resource that addresses some of the recovery needs of a child harmed by Technology-Assisted Child Sexual Abuse that is accessible, age relevant, trauma focused, and ultimately one that does no further harm to the child. POWER has been produced by professionals who have years of experience working with trauma and in collaboration with those with lived experience. It will enable practitioners who work directly with children and young people to focus on the childâs individual recovery needs. The first of it's kind resource is made up of a range of targeted sessions including topics such as: victim blaming, coping with an image being out there and financially motivated sexual extortion. We are delighted that child sexual abuse victims will no longer be bound by a 3-year limit on compensation claims. Alongside members of our Lived Experience Group, we advocated for the removal of the limitation period during the public consultation process. Coming to terms with abuse and disclosure can be a fraught process, taking many years. This change to the law now correctly reflects that child sexual abuse victims may need ample time to process their abusive experience and decide whether to make a civil application for damages. The Marie Collins Foundation supports the need for urgent reform on the use of character references following conviction of sexual offences. Good character in other arenas does not prevent someone from being capable of or committing sexual abuse. We believe that invoking previous good character to mitigate sentencing should disallowed entirely in sexual offence cases and deemed irrelevant upon conviction.
Campaigners call for the use of character references in sexual crime cases to be reformed "urgently".

We welcome the announcement of new AI child sexual abuse laws announced by @ukhomeoffice. Lawrence Jordan Deputy CEO Marie Collins Foundation said: "The Marie Collins Foundation has seen first-hand the devastation caused to children and families by a perpetrator using AI technology. Accessing manuals on how to use AI to create Child Sexual Abuse Material or using AI technology itself to create abuse images of children demonstrates the increasing sophistication of sexual offenders in employing numerous methods to perpetrate abuse. This cannot be minimised or left unchallenged. Therefore, we are very encouraged by the Home Secretary's strong announcement,  demonstrating her commitment to safeguard children from all forms of sexual abuse, and todayâs announcement will hopefully show that when new harms emerge robust steps will be taken to protect children and to hold offenders to full account."

While MCF would have liked to see the government pressing ahead in the implementation of existing recommendations and learning from previous inquiries, (IICSA, Rotherham, Telford and others), we recognise the Home Secretaryâs announcement is a meaningful attempt to address historic and ongoing grooming issues through some new measures. Victims of all forms of abuse have waited too long for serious action to address what they have endured. Now is their time. We stand with them. Read our public response to Home Secretary announcement on grooming gangs here:

We are disappointed by the substance of Ofcom's Illegal Harms Codes of Practice. In their current format, MCF feel they miss the mark in vital areas. This could potentially diminish the intent and impact of the Online Safety Act in real ways, allowing risk of online harm to continue unabated. Read MCF's full statement here âĄď¸:
