I’ve just read a Court of Appeal judgment in which 3,000 exhibits were lost. This is in a murder case where there is a statutory duty on police forces to keep material till the prisoner is released. 3,000 piece of evidence. Lost.

Whilst I’m glad the issue of compensation for miscarriage of justice victims is getting news coverage, the most important issue is being missed by focusing on the B&B deduction. NO compensation is likely to be paid AT ALL when a conviction is quashed.

Prison visit today. 6 trains + 4 car journeys taking 14.5 hours for a 2 hour visit but it’ll be so worth it to provide support to a man who is going through hell.

1. Making it a legal requirement to keep transcripts for at least the length of sentence and 2. Making them free for appeals, law students & reporting.
Currently the law only requires transcripts to be kept for 7 years, even in murder cases. Madness.

What’s happening asks Twitter? Nothing but chaos on the trains. Up at 6am, couldn’t get north of York, prison visit abandoned, return journey standing room only and now a 2 hour wait due to a defective train on another line. Eta 13 hours after I left home What a waste of a day.

I entirely agree! But the production companies I approach want investigative work to be done but don’t want to fund it so the historic role of investigative journalism into miscarriages of justice, which can expose so much about appeals, disclosure, policing, legal aid is lost.
