🚨Job market paper thread! 🚨
Using an RD design and admin TX data, I estimate the effects of college transfers. I find negative earnings returns for marginal students who transfer from 2-yr to 4-yr colleges or 4-yr nonflagship to flagship college.

Talking to my doctor and being an economist is weird because when she asks me things like “how have your migraines been since a medication change” all I can think about is all the other things that have changed and how this isn’t a well identified effect 😩
🚨 I have a new draft of a working paper to share!
Who Scars the Easiest? College Quality and the Effect of Graduating in a Recession (joint with Garrett Anstreicher)

I have a diff in diff question: Suppose I want to do an event study with staggered treatment timing but want to specify only some never-treated units be used as comparisons to each treatment (i.e. in the same commuting zone as the treated) - how can I implement this?
I am so grateful to my advisors, friends, and family for all of the support through this long job market season, and that I got to meet so many amazing researchers along the way 😊

does any have recommendations for references on practical ways to determine which IV method to use - 2SLS v. GMM v. LIML? And/or references for learning about optimal instruments?

Thanks

for featuring our paper! We find when state govs set tuition freezes/caps on public colleges, they respond by lowering institutional financial aid.
==> Freezes/caps lower net tuition more for students who do not receive institutional aid than those who do

so far :) I’m 3rd year PhD student at UW-Madison interested primarily in higher education but with broader interests in public/labor and poverty research
And I feel super lucky that my good friend

Our main finding is that graduates of higher quality colleges experience relatively larger earnings losses from graduating into a bad labor market than graduates of lower quality colleges. This was the opposite of what we expected! 6/N

in Denver! Really appreciate the board’s careful decision making and the sponsors who made it possible without raising conference fees!
The AEFP Board of Directors has voted to relocate the 2023 conference. We will return to Denver for our conference from March 23 - 25, 2023. Read the full announcement about the decision:
Happy to see my work with Burt Barnow and

out online this week! It's part of a special issue of the ANNALS of American Academy of Political and Social Science, "What Has Happened to the American Working Class since the Great Recession?" 1/5
I wish we could have met in person, but doing this online meant we could include twice as many mentees.
Thanks to everyone for making this such a great day! I hope we'll see similar workshops at all the regional econ meetings in the future.

@ArpitaPatnaik6
has a really interesting JMP using surcharges in tuition for some majors to see how low- and high-income students respond differently. She will be a great addition wherever she goes as a talented researcher and good person!
Transfer is VERY common - over 1/3 of US college students transfer! It's esp. relevant for disadvantaged students, who are more likely to attend 2-yr colleges or less-resourced 4-yrs, so transferring may be their most accessible pathway to well-resourced colleges.
My findings complement qualitative literature that finds transfer students face significant challenges in meeting academic demands of new institutions, forming social ties, and navigating complex institutional transfer policies and procedures.
Lots of 4-yr colleges use college GPA cutoffs in transfer admissions, often without making them public. I build on methods from Porter & Yu (2015) to estimate institution-year-specific GPA cutoffs at from applications + admissions data at 4-yr TX public colleges.
This work has implications for policy & transfer student support. In principle, transfer could be cost-effective path to BA, but my work cautions that transfer can have negative impacts on marginal students; care must be taken in structuring transfer system & designing policy.
@MemeMedianMode
Take notes during the session if there are things/people who you want to follow up with. You’re seeing so much research and talking with so many people it’s easy to quickly forget what and who you saw
Completely agree - this session was so meaningful. I didn’t know Rodney personally but have seen and felt what an amazing impact he has had on the profession. RIP ❤️
The most powerful session I've ever been too.
Listening to stories of how Rodney welcomed economists into the profession and how this was valued by so many impacted me more than I can say.
In coincidental timing, I will be presenting this paper tomorrow morning at
#AERA2022
! Come join Roundtable 11 in the San Diego Convention Center Hall B at 8am tomorrow to hear more. 13/13
I also investigate mechanisms and find evidence for transfer students substituting out of high-paying majors into lower-paying majors, reduced employment and labor market experience, and potential loss of support networks.
We find that although tuition freezes/caps keep "sticker price" tuition low, they also cause 4-year institutions to offer lower financial aid than they would have in the absence of the freeze/cap. 4/n
Looks like a really cool paper! It makes tons of sense to me that high school guidance counselors have a high impact on their students - it’s great to see some evidence quantifying this
Excited to share my JMP:
“Beyond Teachers: Estimating Individual Guidance Counselors’ Effects on Educational Attainment”
It provides the first quantitative evidence on counselors’ large effects on a variety of educational outcomes.
To be clear, I estimate local average treatment effects for students on the margin of transfer admission, so results should not be extrapolated to all transfer students. I further help interpretation of results by breaking down several pathways taken by narrowly denied students.
This paper has been a joy to work on with my friend and coauthor
@MinseonPark1
! Many thanks to

anyone have sources for funding data purchases for dissertation work? Looking for around $10K, opportunities for

#highered
or general social science funding appreciated too!
I’m not as ASSA this year so can’t attend this session, but I’m happy to be able to get pieces of it on
#econtwitter
. This is something I thought about in the first two years of my coursework - economics as a field has very little to say about frameworks/models of race
I have thought very hard on this for my paper on topic and as
@TrevonDLogan
pointed out earlier, I had to pull much more from history, political science, and sociology to learn about a framework. We don't have the models for this much yet in economics.
I recenter & pool these detected cutoffs then use them as instrument for transfer in RD design to estimate effects of being narrowly granted transfer admission relative to applying for transfer and being narrowly rejected.
Had the honor of seeing
@BeckyBlank
speak about economic inequality and higher education this afternoon. It was the first time I’ve heard my chancellor speak and I was so impressed!
Nice article from
@chingos
at
@urbaninstitute
. Under a plan that targets public aid recipients, 60% of forgiven dollars go to bottom 2 income quintiles compared to 32% under Warren's phase-out plan and 27% for universal forgiveness.
@AlexBartik
@abiylfoyp
Agreed. There are quite a few studies that suggest positive returns from college quality with RDs (
@SarahCohodes
and
@JoshuaSGoodman
’s paper; Hoekstra 2009). Value added can also vary across individuals-Dillon and Smith finds match effects btw student ability and college quality
Among 2-yr students who apply to transfer to 4-yrs and 4-yr students who apply to transfer to nonflagship 4-yrs, those narrowly accepted are significantly more likely to earn a BA degree than those narrowly denied.
@JoannaVenator
is a great researcher with papers that span lots of interesting topics. She also is super helpful with feedback at seminars, etc. and will be an amazing colleague!
