Hubby of 25 years decided to shave his mustache, a historical artifact he’d had since college. Weirdly, he didn’t seek my “permission,” didn’t feel it necessary to give me notice, just turned up at lunch sans nasal whiskers. Turns out I loved him, not his mustache. Funny that.

Each of my great grandmothers had eleven (surviving) kids each. Eight of my ensuing great-uncles then had to fight in WW2. One was killed in battle. Great, strong, funny and brilliant family members. But absolute, desperate poverty and that was even before the Depression.

Oh yes. We ended up with (stops to count) 16 out of our eventual 21 cats that way. Lived decades on a farm where people would drop off perfectly lovely pet kitties because they were no longer wanted. Ended up with a sweet and affectionate community of abandoned adult cats.

Yes. Plus not being able to have a credit card in your own name in the 1970’s; no child support if you did manage to divorce, and if you did divorce, you’d automatically have to take full custody and support for the kids. 90% of divorced women instantly reduced to poverty level.
