It tells about the nature of aging and, to some extent, repeats what we published in TREE earlier this year.

1/ We all age but nobody understands what for? Why should we? The main idea of life is replication, organisms are designed to disseminate their genes. Dying apparently seems to be a bad idea for this mission. Therefore, aging remains an evolutionary paradox.

So, our model seems to resolve these two problems:
1) We claim that aging evolved to remove individuals infected with chronic diseases that do not kill but reduce fecundity (or sterilize completely). Such individuals are a problem because they might infect their relatives!

A little bit of background: adaptive aging models were considered heresy for a long time. A time ago, I also was on the side of inquisitors that rejected these ideas based on two main reasons:
1) what is dying good for?
2) if aging is a program, where are non-aging mutants?

Examples of genes that have good and bad features are around, but the ideas of why evolution cannot disconnect these two functions are missing. Animals evolve longer lifespans together with body sizes, brains, and flight without any problems. So, this model is also questionable.

Infectious diseases are probably the strongest selective factor on Earth, and all the species, with no exceptions, are exposed to infectious diseases.

Indeed, our bodies evolved to disseminate our genes, and everything (including aging) should either assist this purpose or at least not interfere with it.
One of the stone age ideas is that animals do not survive to the age of senescence in the wild, and aging does not matter.

So, aging is bad for animals' survival. But why it matters? Why cannot it be our favorite set of damages? Here we can compare tree and ground squirrels. These cuties are so similar in the pictures, but tree squirrels live 1.5-2 longer on average than ground squirrels!!!
