This Ohio State commencement speaker is talking about bitcoin and somebody is dead. The students appeared to boo when he said bitcoin is a misunderstood asset.
@emmaketchup7
Superlatives were out of control at my high school. There was one for best legs. Others were just stupid. There was one for ‘going to college furthest away’ that we voted on and didn’t just check. The person going the furthest away did not win.
The

spacecraft has finished over three months of testing

Plum Brook Station. It will travel to space next year for the Artemis I mission, an unmanned mission. The spacecraft will leave Ohio in about a week.
I’m newer to the newspaper biz but I think it’s bizarre that
@ThePlainDealer
(
@clevelanddotcom
) has zero photos of the

on the front page today. The print deadline is early based on how outdated the info is but still.
Exciting career news: this is my last 1/2 week with the
@DaytonDailyNews
. Next week, I start work at The Columbus Dispatch as a courts and crime enterprise reporter. I’m grateful
@DispatchAlerts
is trusting me with such an important beat in the Midwest’s second largest city.📰🎉
Ohio now has the highest daily average of any state for COVID hospitalizations, according to the New York Times.
We rank fifth for cases per 100k residents, third for hospitalizations per 100k residents and third for daily average deaths.
Today was my first day at the
@daytondailynews
! I will be covering the communities of Huber Heights, Fairborn, Riverside and Yellow Springs. I’m excited to join this awesome newsroom even if I won’t physically be in the newsroom again for a few months at least!
I found out that Gannett eliminated the only news reporter position at the Ashland
@timesgazette
(it was unfilled). That was my first job a few years ago. There wasn't enough of me to cover the community of 50k people. I am so sad for Ashland. Democracy, community will suffer.
The family of Sinzae Reed, a 13-year-old who was fatally shot Oct. 12 at the Wedgewood Apartments in Columbus' Hilltop neighborhood, want to know why the alleged shooter — a neighbor who legally should not have been able to have a gun — is walking free.
For the first time since the pandemic began, Miami Valley Hospital has ZERO coronavirus patients, says a spokesperson. There are just 12 coronavirus patients in our eight-county region.
Its official!!! I am excited to announce that I will be starting at the
@daytondailynews
at the end of this month covering Greene County. This is my last week with the
@timesgazette
.
Gannett is making (non-union) workers take off a week unpaid in December, you know, the time of year people spend the most and often get bonuses from their employer. And our 401k match is being suspended.
Equal Districts activists got these printed quickly at Staples during the recess. The independent mapmaker was working until a minute ago on the live stream. Ohio Redistricting Commission is mostly here and should convene soon.

@GovMikeDeWine
You’ve been allowed to attend church the entire time. That was never taken away. And you have been allowed to go out to dinner for three weeks.
Outside abortion clinic in Dayton as soon as the decision dropped, anti-abortion advocates celebrated, thanked God. Inside, I spoke with a 16-year-old with braces who’s desperate for an abortion. She’s about 4 weeks along, said she can barely take care of herself. 📷
@ldufour
When thinking about six-week abortion bans, know that six weeks into pregnancy = six weeks after your last period/FOUR weeks after sex.
So after a missed period (if your period is regular), you have two weeks to get an abortion in Ohio.
I just walked to the Gem City Market which is awesome!!! The cashier had to look up my membership. They said ‘oh I read your articles! It’s like a celebrity at my checkout!’ They just made my month☺️💎❤️
Oh, hey, it was less than a year ago that I worked in Ashland! For my work at the
@timesgazette
, I'm a finalist for an OAPME 2020 award for best news writer competing against newspapers of similar size to the TG.
One of my journalism classes in college had us watch a video of a mundane public meeting and then write a story in an hour. We did that like twice. J-schools should do that way more often and with way more complicated meetings.
This Franklin County prosecutor just said baklava instead of balaclava about a dozen times in his closing statement in a double murder trial. Oops. His co-counsel pointed out the mistake when she got up there.
Writing today about anything other than what happened in our capitol yesterday feels really weird. But there’s still a global pandemic and there are thousands of coronavirus vaccines collecting dust in the Dayton-area instead of going in arms so I’m writing about that.
I am beyond excited to get this
#CovidVaccine
I have been writing about this for months and I’m ready to do my part. Any discomfort I may have over the next day will be worth it.
Packing dishes in newspapers I have articles in makes me feel like an adult. Realizing I have no idea how to package some objects reminds me that I’m 23. Thank God for the internet and my endless supply of newspaper.
@nytimes
This is great news. But remember, supply will be very limited at first (in a week, Pfizer is expected to deliver to the U.S. enough pills to cover just 65,000 Americans) and experts say prevention through vaccination is still our best tool in this fight.
Oh yeah, yesterday I was officially fully vaccinated 🎉 and I forgot to celebrate by licking a public toilet seat. Well better late than never! Guess I’m going out for lunch!
@barryverylong
True. But some students saw it and it must be upsetting. It just feels weird. No comment on if anything should’ve been done differently.
It was recently my one-year anniversary at
@DispatchAlerts
. I’m struck by how much I’ve learned just working in a physical newsroom where I can observe how more experienced reporters do things. Working from home is great but it has drawbacks, especially for newbies.
Why do restaurants still use styrofoam containers? It stresses me out. Are eco-friendlier options more expensive? How much more? Can I pay extra to not have my lunch container stay on this earth forever?? 😰😰
Only around 40% of recyclable goods in the Columbus area go into recycle bins, according to a 2019 assessment by the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio.

This year, I’m thankful for the wide availability of the COVID vaccine (I made an appointment yesterday online and got my booster this morning) and pumpkin spice chai lattes!
Oh, I’m causing division by writing an unbiased story about something newsworthy in the community? Current events are divisive. If nobody is ever upset by what I write, I’m probably not doing my job.
I gotta practice saying ‘this is Jordan Laird with the Dayton Daily News.’ I keep stumbling and almost telling people I’m with the Ashland Times-Gazette because I’m so used to rattling that off.
With huge numbers of Ohioans still not vaccinated COVID-19 hospitalizations are rising & it's like last year's winter surge. Back then it was hard to get a vaccination. Now it is easy to get one, yet only 54% of Ohioans are fully vaccinated.
My story about a goat break-in got picked up by the

Although I really wanted to make it into those papers, this is not what I thought would get me there. 😂🤷♀️
Yet another thing my journalism school didn’t prepare me for: being bashed on social media for being biased, an “indoctrinated NY scholar,” a “skeezer” and being ugly/having short hair. I try to remember that the critics are the most vocal and not to read the comments.
Interviews in-person are the best. Gosh, I missed doing them so much. The responses are so much better when the person can see my face and see that I’m listening to them.
Christopher and Lynnita Davis of Dayton were the 1st in line to vote at the Montgomery County Board of Elections at 7:30. The BOE opens at 8 for the 1st day of early voting. They planned to be here on the 1st morning because they’re concerned about the security of mail-in voting.
I’m thankful my car accident Monday was not worse than a broken arm, people at the scene and the hospital were so kind to me, my surgeon, Liz who held my hand through two arm reductions, especialli my mother who flew to NY within five hours of me calling her, and talk to text.
Know that when the next episode of the
@DDNInvestigates
podcast (finally) comes out, it is brought to you by my closet studios. And yes, I have a walk-in closet full of nice clothes but while working from home I wear an oversized ‘American Needs Journalists’ hoodie. 🎙
@Tylerjoelb
@GovMikeDeWine
Remember when wine with DeWine was a thing because Ohioans felt like their leaders were giving them important information? Yeah. I don’t think that’s happening anymore
I am so excited to join this amazing team. Even remotely, my colleagues have been really helpful in making me a better reporter and I can already tell why this newspaper has won so many awards.
I’ve lived and worked with a cat for about a month now and her favorite spot is on my keyboard. 😖😫😤 at one point today she walked across my laptop keyboard, this happened and I couldn’t figure out why…??
Nobody in Ohio knows how to act now that we finally have a team in the Super Bowl lol. Also see the renaming of state parks after Bengals players (temporarily).
Here’s a little known fact: the serving size for
@girlscouts
thin mints is 4 cookies, not a sleeve.
But I encourage you to support young scouts by continuing to inhale entire sleeves in one sitting and buying more cookies! That’s what I do! 😉
#GirlScoutCookies
The Blue Jackets may not have won tonight but it was a great game and an exciting way to end my first week in Columbus. The city has won my heart already. Thanks
@megankhenry
for inviting me!!!
How are
@Def_Not_Brandon
’s cat Suki and my dog Rosie getting along now that we live together? Well, Suki never liked any of the three pet beds Brandon got her before but now she wants Rosie’s (probably just to spite her).
(Ignore the mess. Still unpacking)

Downtown Ashland seems like an unlikely place for a Black Lives Matter demonstration, let alone one that has gone on for 75 days as of Tuesday.

I got a Christmas card from my news carrier 🗞 tucked into my
@daytondailynews
🥰 Happy holidays to all of the wonderful people behind the scenes whose names don’t appear in our paper but are a vital part of getting the news out there!
Today I interviewed a source by phone who had a babbling toddler in their lap. They were very apologetic and I tried to convince them that I understand. Many of us are working from home and dealing with the challenges that accompany that. It’s all good dude. ❤️😷
Yes, Josh is taking over for me and I’m going to take a nap. 👋 I’m not working election night (because I worked this morning) which is going to feel WEIRD! 🗳 🇺🇸
Starting my Election Day shift (with my Election Day tie of course). I’m covering lines and issues at the polls. Drop me a line if you see or hear anything.
I’m at Sinclair Community College Centerville, the only polling location in Montgomery County with six precincts. Over 75 people in line. Let me know if you see anything unusual at the polls today in Dayton area! I’m an official poll observer in Montgomery County.

Rosa Lee Weinert, 92, is “thrilled” to be one of the first Montgomery County residents to get the coronavirus vaccine on the first day of Phase 1B vaccinations in Ohio. A long-time nurse, she tells everyone she knows to get the vaccine when it’s available.
Starting at about 4:30 pm everyday, Rosie sits and stares at me, whining occasionally. It can be very distracting. The time varies but she knows that when I get off work and get up from my chair, I will feed and walk her. 😅
I was in the weird position last night of hearing my name during the Franklin County GOP meeting.
John Rutan shared the emails he sent me in their entirety because he says I reported his comments unfairly.
The party voted to rescind his endorsement.
Dayton-area residents of color, particularly in minority neighborhoods, are denied home loans at higher rates than their white counterparts over half a century after the Fair Housing Act of 1968 was intended to level the playing field.

Over 100 people are in line in 88 degree heat in front of the Dayton Metro Library - Huber Heights at
@PublicHealthDMC
’s first coronavirus vaccine clinic where they’re giving out $100 Kroger gift cards to unvaccinated shot recipients while supplies last.
Today I learned that a group of kids in Worthington have a publication called Neighborhood News. This issue has comics, a feature, (fake) ads and an opinions section about who gets more turns. It has an interactive spinner. That’s the kind of innovation that will save news. 📰🥰
🐑Baaaaad to the bone. Sheep have been running around in Dayton’s Western Hill neighborhood, startling residents and visitors and eluding capture.

I went to cover today’s downtown Ashland protest in support of Black Lives Matter. I interviewed a few people. Then the leader told me he wouldn’t speak to me unless I protested with them and held up a sign. I tried to explain that I have to be an impartial observer. (1/3)
Folks who pull their masks down to talk boggle my mind. People really don’t understand how masks work or the purpose. That is when it’s most important to keep the mask on: when talking to somebody in close range. 😷❤️
