Do you have a story tip, particularly involving police and/or crime? You can email me at bbruner

We used to have a Google form but we will be losing access to that. Emailing is best (and you can still be anonymous).
I was the ONLY reporter in the courtroom this morning as the man accused of raping a 10-year-old girl, impregnating her, leading to an abortion in Indiana, was arraigned.
This confirms that the case exists.
Mega thanks to
@MonroeTrombly
for helping compile everything.
And to my colleagues
@indystar
including
@indystartony
for helping on their end.
This was a big story that we were able to confirm and break by using public records.
Good morning to all my new followers this morning (my numbers have more than doubled in less than 24 hours).
If you're hoping for a lot of stories about hot-button issues, you're going to be disappointed.
I cover local news that really focuses on Columbus.
But with that being said, local news is really important, as yesterday shows.
The best way you can support local journalism is to subscribe to your local paper and support those journalists.
And that's just a sample. There are so many stories from my talented colleagues that you'll never hear about outside of Columbus but have a real impact.
Following me is great, but follow your local news, put your money where your Twitter follows are and subscribe.
Thanks to
@ElaheIzadi
for sharing how the story of the 10-year-old who sought an abortion in Indiana - and the arrest of her alleged rapist - came to be. I'm honored to be featured in the pages of the Washington Post.
Whoever said TV news crews can't work together should have been on the West Side this afternoon. In leaving the scene on Sullivant, I managed to inadvertently get my car stuck. Cameramen from all three stations (4, 6 and 10) helped push me out and I am so grateful!!! Thanks guys!
Per
@MayorGinther
office: THERE ARE NO CONFIRMED CASES OF COVID-19 IN COLUMBUS.
A posting on social media was meant to say Ohio, but inadvertently said Columbus.
Again. NO CASES CONFIRMED IN COLUMBUS AS OF NOON.
@DispatchAlerts
After Makenzi Ridley was killed last year, her family channeled their pain into helping others with ambitions like she had.
@Miss_EThompson
shares their story:
Want to hear me talk about how I learned the information that confirmed the existence of a 10 year old girl who became pregnant after being sexually assaulted? The podcast I did with
@ElaheIzadi
and
@BroKrift
is now live.
The Dispatch is taking legal action to try and make it so that we can get the names of officers involved in critical incidents.
Why is this important?
If we don't have their names, we don't have the ability to get their personnel files to see if there's patterns or history.
Good news to see he has movement.
Now, let’s look at the process of evaluation that went into the decision to play given his injury, whether it was head or back or whatever, 5 days ago. It’s all involving the nervous system.
@shefalikulkarni
Do your homework. If they sent a release before an event, read it. If you have time, find background info on the person you’re interviewing or the event hosts. Not only will you look prepared, but you’ll also be able to ask better questions, which respects your time and theirs.
7,100 cases today.
Remember when we were all totally shocked by the thought of between 6K and 8K cases a day?
Well, we're here. Dr. Amy Acton told us so.
If you are one to pray, please say a word for Jim Siegel (
@phrontpage
), his wife and children. If not a prayer, please send good vibes and positivity. Jim was found unresponsive this morning.
He is a tough reporter but a kind and gentle person. We’re all wishing him well!
Whoever decided to start using this photo I took and my other one from May 29 that I tweeted again last night to say it was from this weekend, please stop.
As you can see from the time stamp, it’s not from this weekend. It’s from May 29.
So, AEP says they took people off the power grid - won’t say how many of the thousands who don’t have power - to prevent longer outages. Without warning.
And they didn’t provide information for hours about what was going on. Not the best PR strategy.
Multi-post thread alert: For the last 5 years and 10 months, I have enjoyed working at the Advocate. But, that era is coming to an end in a few short weeks. My last day at the Advocate will be July 13. I will be joining the
@DispatchAlerts
team on July 16....
I started this book last night and in about 90 minutes read about 175 pages.
It’s a fast-paced whammy of adrenaline that is super fun to read. Can’t wait to finish it tonight hopefully.
Thanks for a great show
@thechicks
!! My younger self was so happy to scream the “OG” songs and my current self was happy to scream the newer stuff too! Such a fun night! (Earl’s in the trunk!)
This is every journalist’s worst nightmare. We often talk about how safe scenes are because of how many police are there… but that’s not truly the reality.
Lifting this newsroom up tonight and for many nights to come. ❤️❤️❤️
Also, please do not copy and paste an entire story into the comments. It's kind of stealing.
We work hard for our paper and would like to be compensated for said hard work. Calling us crap and then copying that "crap" into a comment isn't OK.
Subscribe don't steal.
Here’s a version out from behind the paywall of the story in Washington Post today.
Still feels surreal to be part of the story, not just the one reporting it.
*Some professional news:*
Spoiler alert: I'm NOT leaving The Dispatch. (Sorry, trolls. Hope you hadn't popped that champagne quite yet.)
Starting Monday, I am moving away from being the primary person covering Columbus police for The Dispatch (after nearly six years).
1/5
Here's examples from just the last few weeks of local journalism breaking stories that will likely never make national headlines.
@ReporterBush
showed how the Columbus mayor's office has been trying to exert influence in the charter commission process:
Four months after students and faculty called for university to cut ties with CPD and provide less patrols, there are now calls to increase them after OSU senior Chase Meola was shot and killed after an altercation outside a house party off-campus.
More than 700 people have signed petition so
@OhioState
will increase
@ColumbusPolice
safety patrols on and off-campus in university district. “You have 50,000 kids in your care. Protect them” it says.
Here's a deep dive from
@MonroeTrombly
into what led up to the shooting of Ma'Khia Bryant - which he garnered from reading hundreds of documents and listening to interviews etc.
Some good news at Grant today. The officer who was shot a couple weeks ago is being released to a rehab center shortly. He’s got a little support here.
Excellent work by Columbus police and fire this afternoon. As I've been listening to the scanner, they were able to talk a man who had climbed a bridge near Downtown with the intent of jumping off of it down and got him help--starting with a blanket to get him warm.
Five years ago today, I started at
@DispatchAlerts
. What a wild ride it’s been covering everything from therapy dogs to homicides to breaking an international level story about a 10 year old who suffered the unimaginable.
@shefalikulkarni
Also, always ask if there’s something they thought you would ask but you didn’t, check the spelling of names, get correct titles (websites and releases can have typos) and ask if there’s anything else you should know about. That last one may give you a whole nother story.
Tomorrow is
@Woodsnight
's last day at The Dispatch. I know Jim doesn't want a huge deal made out of his departure for a (very) well-deserved retirement, but you can't always get what you want.
So, here's a few things that I've enjoyed about working with Jim and will miss:
Abigail Wexner has promoted domestic violence/sexual abuse awareness. And yet, a charity fund she created only took 1 donation: $47M from Jeffrey Epstein.
Both she and her husband declined to comment
Questions surround Wexner foundation funded by Epstein
Also, to the gentleman I talked to this morning, Thank You.
When I told him what I typically report on, he asked about my mental health and how I was holding up.
Compassion is a wonderful thing.
Answer: it’s not being transparent. The number of stories I’ve wanted to do but can’t because the records I need to prove what I’m being told take months and months… and by then another story is needing to be reported. It’s a disservice to the community.
“We’re doing our best, based on the staffing,” said
@MayorGinther
when I asked about delays in receiving public records.
@MarkRWeaver
argues it is the city’s responsibility to staff the public records unit. The story tonight
@10TV
at 6p.
It isn’t just football. And it isn’t a new problem.
Accept a meal from someone, you may get suspended by the NCAA.
Be accused of sexual assault, transfer and keep on playing.
If you’re a fan of college sports—any sport— you need to read this piece.
Another bombshell from
@ColumbusPolice
: Officer Andrew Mitchell, who fatally shot Donna Castleberry on Aug. 23 while working undercover vice operations, was relieved of duty Wednesday night. Confirmed by CPD.
@DispatchAlerts
Tonight was absolutely incredible. My first
@taylorswift13
concert and it was amazing. I may not have any voice when I wake up… and my legs/feet may hurt…. But it was so worth it. Core memories were definitely unlocked.
The Dispatch has staff in place to cover a planned press conference at approximately 10:30 where police are expected to release the body camera footage of the shooting.
An angry crowd gathered Tuesday night near an Ohio home where a police officer fatally shot a person while responding to an attempted stabbing call. Family members said a 15-year-old girl was shot.
We are all happy to see 2020 in the rear view mirror. But please do not celebrate by firing a gun in the air tonight.
What goes up, comes down and you don’t control where that is.
Jeff Clark was a special man to a lot of
@ColumbusPolice
officers. He died Friday and is being remembered and buried today with full honors.
Read about Jeff’s life and legacy in tomorrow’s
@DispatchAlerts
and online later today.
Dear Columbus: I know I'm new here, but can we figure out how to drive in the rain a little better.... Just a little improvement would be wonderful. Thanks--a frustrated commuter
Columbus police said the Acura MDX has been found and the 4-month-old baby was found safe inside it. Car/baby found on Near East Side.
The baby is believed to be safe but will be looked at at the hospital as a precaution.
One of the questions that continues to be asked/pondered is whether or not the girl in this case would have been able to get a procedure in Ohio under the exception for the mother's health.
@AnnaStaver
and
@haleybemiller
asked around about that:
Protest is fine. Peaceful gatherings of protest is enshrined in the first amendment. Everyone has a right to their opinion and free speech.
But it needs to be reasonable. The agency involved, fine. The store, I can understand sort of.
The parents of someone… uncalled for.
Protest is scheduled for the parents of the Blendon Twp Officers’ Parents House.
Regardless of what your opinion is regarding Ms Young or the Officers involvement in incident, you are complete trash if you are ok with this.
This isn't just a student journalism issue. It's something every journalist has been asked.
But, if you're in PUBLIC, there is no expectation of privacy. If you are walking down the sidewalk and end up in a photo of a building, you're out in public. Same thing goes for protests
I bought Fearless Taylor’s Version yesterday and listened to it on the way to my parents this morning.
It’s just as good now, although the lyrics hit a little different at 31 than they did at 19/20.
I think I have to admit I’m a Taylor Swift fan now.....
The additional body camera and store surveillance video appears to directly contradict the version of events presented by Ta'Kiya Young's family earlier this week.
Store video shows Young didn't put down the bottles and appears to accelerate at the officer in front of the car.
We as a city only thrive as much as the most down-trodden areas.
This series shines a light on what the statistics say is the worst —the Sullivant corridor.
Read the series here, along with video and podcasts.
Suffering on Sullivant: Part 1
My colleague John Futty talked with several experts in police use of force about the shooting of Ma'Khia Bryant. All of them said the officer followed training and didn't have time to de-escalate the situation.
This interview is completely fascinating.
I’m riveted to my TV.
I don’t know that I 100% believe everything I’m hearing but it’s fascinating to listen.
Thank you to the
#ohioap
for the incredible honor of being named the first Rising Star in newspapers. Today was an awesome day of celebrating journalism and connecting/reconnecting with our colleagues from around the state.
#ohioapme2018
Hi, Happy Friday. It's me, your local reporter.
Wanted to let you all know about a story I just published exclusive to
@DispatchAlerts
about the hand-selected leader of Columbus police's new gang enforcement unit and his past.
It's good to know that a female reporter can always count on her appearance being one of the first things, if not the first, to be attacked almost every time.
If you are someone who prays or sends good vibes into the universe, if you could spare a thought for the family of my sister’s fiancé, it would be appreciated. His mother passed rather unexpectedly yesterday and his family could use some positive thoughts.
One of my biggest conundrums since moving to Columbus has been finding good Chinese food. I'm leary to try new places -- and won't do buffets -- so I'm open to suggestions. I'm in the mood for some good sweet and sour chicken.
What say you, Twitter?
So excited to FINALLY be able to say I’m in the room where it happens!!! Excited to see the Angelica Tour knock it out of the park this afternoon
@HamiltonMusical
The protestors chanted “cite your sources” towards the room where the reporters are staged.
Because if the coverage hasn’t been anything, it’s well sourced.
As we all mourn Kobe’s passing, remember there are several other families who are equally as devastated and torn apart by the news that their loved one has died. While their names won’t cause ESPN to change programming, their losses are no less tragic.
There are a lot of tough days in journalism, but I can easily say today is my hardest. Saying goodbye to people I've worked with for five days a week, every week for nearly six years is hard. There have been tears shed already and I know more to come.
Wonder if the money Gene Smith and Urban Meyer won’t be paid during their suspensions will be kept by the university or donated to organizations who seek to educate about domestic assault/abuse and/or resources in the community for those trying to get out of those situations....
I reviewed the 700+ emails sent to the email address set up by
@MayorGinther
in its first week and it wasn’t all reports of misconduct.
More than 200 people wrote in supporting
@ColumbusPolice
and 100+ anger at Ginther.
But there were also recipes and coupons for Adam and Eve.
This police agency has had 2 officers killed in the last six months. Both were from the same recruit class and they were friends. Thinking of all the TPD officers, but especially those in that class --recruit classes have tight bonds--who have gone through so much.
Mother Cosette Stalker, left, and Fiance Ashley Ohmer, right, arrive for the funeral of TPD Officer Brandon Stalker at The University of Toledo. TPD Police Chief George Kral heads a line of officers behind the casket.

The next big step in the case happened today: An indictment (two counts of rape) was filed.
Fuentes will have a court date soon for a formal arraignment, where he is expected to enter a not guilty plea through his attorney.
And yes, I limited who could respond to that post because I don't need threats.
I'm not saying the footage does contradict, but it appears to. And there's still a lot to be decided in this case as the investigation continues and a grand jury will consider in the future.
.
@ColumbusPolice
announce they have solved the 1982 cold case homicide of 8-year-old Kelly Ann Prosser. Story online

That’s a photo I (a Dispatch reporter) took on May 29 that is being used without permission or credit. Same car in the background and everything. This is not from this weekend. It was from the afternoon of May 29.
Just a reminder that reporters are only as good as the information they're given.
If you don't tell us about an event, we aren't mind readers. We won't magically know about it.
If you want coverage, tell us. If you didn't tell us, don't complain that we didn't cover it.
As a reporter, I hold myself to a high standard — including approaching stories and subjects as a human with empathy and compassion first and reporter with difficult questions second. But there are instances when it becomes clear why my profession is disparaged as heartless.
This series is so important. We can’t look away. We can’t accept anything less than real solutions.
The work done by our team, led by
@hollyzachariah
and
@MikeWagner48
is beyond words.
Look in The Dispatch starting Sunday and listen to the two accompanying podcasts online.
"It's a convenient place that holds all our secrets." - Advocate to end human trafficking Hannah Estabrook says in
@DispatchAlerts
podcast for "Suffering on Sullivant," a 3-part series hitting Sunday.
It's dark, yes, but we eventually look for light.
We hope you pay attention.
I wonder how many people in Ohio (or in the General Assembly) have had a child through IVF ( I personally know quite a few) or have had a grandchild that way.
Well…. This bill - if passed - COULD limit the ability to use such methods to conceive.
BRAND NEW:
Ohio House Rep. Gary Click introduced HB 704, which would give total rights to "unborn human individuals from the moment of conception."
Recognizing "personhood" at conception already caused concern during abortion hearings. Doctors believe this could prohibit IVF.
