Gentle reminder that not all women choose to tell their stor(ies) of gender and/or sexual-based violence publicly. Some choose other paths to impact change and survival, in itself, is an act of courage. Transformative change requires many roles/actions - let's honour them all.

Back in February 2023, I wrote this: LPS got their increase to hire 52 new officers. I tried to tell y’all they’d be back. And here we are, not even a year later. This time a 30% increase over 4 yrs (672ish million). 🧵

@shesrideordie They hate the mirror. But that's not yours to own. You just go ahead and push that right back over to where it belongs. Proud of you. Thank you for all you're doing - we see you. xx

P.P.S. $2.5 million invested in community supports over 5 yrs - they’re down to 0 shooting deaths for 2023. #ldnont tell the mayor/council you want funds reallocated from the $672 million police budget to community supports. Fund community. Fund care.

There are more, most of whom don't report because of EXTREME personal and professional costs. My work finds those who reported experience retribution, further abuse, mental illness, sick leaves, and/or resignations. That's not an accident friends. It's institutionally designed.

Just want to let folks know that this may not be an easy read for those with lived experience of institutional violence, particularly related to race and/or gender and sexual-based violence.

This thread👇 @StevensonLDN pls read. You have many privileges and power through your social location and positions on @CityofLdnOnt council and @ldnpoliceboard . The harm you're causing is multi-layered and runs deep. It's not too late to recognize that, reflect, and change course

Alright so, a couple of immediate thoughts: * Ignoring the problem is what we have historically done as a city. The Hubs addresses issues at several levels. It supports the complex needs of those within the unhoused population with beds, basic needs and providing wrap /1

@EffyZarabi28678 How about @shesrideordie ’s 10 year, ongoing fight with Waterloo police? She also reported gender & sexual-based violence and is experiencing severe retribution/attempts to silence. Read thread below for her story. These are 2 examples, many we’ll never know

1/Mark your calendars! My testimony starts back up Feb 8! A brief summary: 2013- I reject SGT Nathan Cardoza’s sexual advances, warned not to report or my career will suffer. Sexual rumours circulate, I’m labeled a bitch and a slut, lose my back up, I feel unsafe at work.

Case in point. Are you aware of @EffyZarabi28678 ’s case against Toronto police? She was just fired for her social media exposing systemic sexism, racism, gender & sexual-based violence by male officers. TPS offered to pay her a lot of $ in exchange for NDA. She refused.

I am a Police Officer who was recently fired for exposing systemic sexual violence/discrimination at Toronto police. Swearing and exposing the abuse is not tolerated at TPS but sexually abusing your colleagues is just fine. Police unions are complicit in our abuse. #MeToo #NDA

@StevensonLDN Mistakes are made. We're all learning and (un)learning but what you're doing here (and the multiple other tweets) by shifting blame/justifying posting those pictures is creating deeper harm. Please. Stop. Take down the pictures. Reflect. Apologize. Learn. That's real leadership.

Happy #ldnont transit/libraries got more funding. This should have been reallocated from the police budget. Hope transit and library folx continue to help push for reallocation from police to community supports. Unity is vital. A 🧵on last budget meeting

2/ Councillor Skylar Franke opens with an amendment proposing to reallocate a mere $8 mill over 4 yrs from police to 4 housing-related programs that assist 3790 ppl in London who got 0 funding. Says housing biggest concern from folx in ward, not massive police spending

Hey #ldnont we have a huge police budget ask on the table, largely framed around 'safety.' 640 million over the 4 years - a 30% increase by 2027. Check out this research. Do folx know that the budget doesn't include the money for the 13% raise over 4 yrs? This is unsustainable.

3) Councillors Ferreira and Hopkins agree, support Franke. Also indicate hearing from many that don’t support police budget. Hopkins makes point the police haven’t attended council to answer questions re: budget like past yrs. Feels police budget has gone unquestioned.

I have another in review that is an intersectional look at how the institution betrays and punishes those who try to report workplace abuse, particularly women and racialized folks. What happens on the inside cannot be separated from what happens on the outside.
